Larvicidal activity of 34 plant essential oils were tested against the 4th instar larvae of Culex pipiens pallens. Among them, six oils (basil, fennel, caraway seed, lime, thyme red, and thyme white) showed more than 80% mortality at 100 mg $litre^{-1}$ concentration. GC and GC-MS analyses of the six essential oils and bioassay of their components revealed that anethole (a major component of fennel and basil oil) and (+)-limonene (a major component of caraway seed and lime oil) showed higher larvicidal activities than others. In addition to the above two components, ${\alpha}$-phellandrene, p-cymene, $\gamma$-terpinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, and thymol showed higher larvicidal activity than Bt product.
A rapid radicle assay for prescreening antagonistic bacteria to Phytophthora capsic4 causal agent of Phytophthora blight of pepper was developed. Sixty-four bacterial strains with in vitro antifungal activity selected out of 1,400 strains isolated from soils of Ansung, Chunan, Koyang, and Paju, Korea in 1998 were used for development of the bioassay. Uniformly germinated pepper seeds dipped in bacterial cells for 3 hours were placed near the edges of growing mycelia of P. capsici on water agar containing 0.02% glucose. Five-week-old pepper plants(cv. Nockwang) were inoculated to compare with results of the radicle assay developed in this study. For plant inoculation, pepper seeds were sown in potting mixtures incorporated with the bacterial strains, then transplanted into steam-sterilized soils 3 weeks later. Plants were hole-inoculated with zoospores of P. capsici 2 weeks after transplanting. Disease incidence and severity were determined in radicle and plant assessments, respectively. In radicle assay, six strains, GK-B15, GK-B25, OA-B26, OA-B36, PK-B09, and VK-B14 consistently showed the significant(P=0.05) disease reduction against radicle infection by the fungus, four of which also did in plant assessments. Strains OA-B36 and GK-B15 consistently reduced the fungal infection in both the radicle assay and the plant assessment. Therefore, prescreening strains using the radicle assay developed in this study followed by plant assay could reduce time and labor, and improved the possibility of selecting antagonistic bacteria for control of Phytophthora blight of peppers.

Fumigant toxicity of 18 plant essential oils were tested against the adults of oak longicorn beetle, Moechotypa diphysis. Among them, eucalyptus, rosemary and pennyroyal oils showed 100% mortality and sage oil showed 85% mortality at 10 $\mu\ell/\ell$ (air) dose. Eucalyptus and rosemary oils showed 100% mortality within 6 hr after treatment at 10 $\mu\ell/\ell$ (air) dose. GC and GC/MS analysis of the four essential oils and bioassay of their components revealed that 1,8-cineole (a major component of eucalyptus, rosemary and sage oils), thujone (a major component of sage oil) and pulegone (a major component of pennyroyal oil) showed higher adulticidal activity than others.

Aspiring to the new raw materials of insecticides is one of the plant extracts. The material structure of a variety of plant extracts have because the material to the defense of the plant itself, the case of insecticides, using plant extracts, safe, has low toxicity and has the advantage of highly distinctive and fall. Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara L.) is belonging to the family Compositae, and distributed in all parts of China as medicinal plants and indigenous plants used. Coltsfoot is known that it is effect to respiratory disease and has an antiviral effect. However, the reported insecticidal activity of coltsfoot could be not found. Fortunately, I found insecticidal activities when I was screening the bioassay against several insects with a lot of plant extracts. Using the ethanol extract of the Tussilago farfara, there were insecticidal activities against Culex pipiens pallens and Tetranychus urticae. There were several fractions in ethanol extract of coltsfoot by using various organic solvents. Hexane fraction showed a higher insecticidal activity than any other fraction. It is confirmed that hexane fraction contained pyrethrin by using HPLC analysis. So, it might be suggested that extract of coltsfoot has an insecticidal activity and its effect due to a ingredient of pyrethrin.
Ecological characteristics of Rumex acetosella have been studied both in the laboratory and in the field. R. acetosella grows well straight up after germination, elongating and thickening their rhizomes with sprouts erupting along their bodies of the rhizome. The number and development of leaves and ramets reach their peak by April. The size of leaves and the cover degree of the plant increase from April to May. R. acetosella is an ephemeral, a short life mode plant, finishing its life cycle in July or August. The germination and seedling growth of selected species exposed to aqueous extracts of R. acetosella were in inverse proportion to concentration. The growth of Rumex japonicus and Digitaria sanguinalis cultivated in soil with R. acetosella was more inhibited than that of the control. Twelve chemical compounds were identified from R. acetosella by GC and HPLC and verified by bioassay with the same chemical reagents. It would be assdumed that these chemical substances are responsible for the allelopathic effect of R. acetosella. In short, R. acetosella plants grow vigorously from April and maintain their superior competitive ability to other plants in forming their communities by emitting chemical substances into their environment.
This study had been conducted to determine morphological characteristics of soil in the major districts cultivating flue-cured tobacco plant. Also native soil productivities were measured by means of bioassay planting tobacco plant without fertilizer at 87 selected soils through field experiment. Morphological characteristics of troll affecting the dry weight of tobacco leaves cultivated in the field were investigated Among soil morphological characteristics, topograpy, slope, topsoil depth, soil depth, and soil texture had influenced with high significant on the dry weight of tobacco leaves. For prediction of dry weight (productivity) of tobacco leaves without fertilizer , multiple regression analysis were introduced using soul morphological characteristics. A combination of topography, slope, topsoil depth, and soil texture was very reliable for prediction of productivity. The regression equation was y = -16.88 -14, 34$X_1$ +20.43$X_2$ +50.21$X_3$ -7.54$X_4$ +13.45$X_5$ R = $0.670^{**}$ Where $X_1$ : Topography $X_2$ : Slope $X_3$ : Topsoil Depth $X_4$ : Soil Depth $X_5$ : Soil Texture
Two kinds of toxins were demonstrated in the culture filtrate of H. sativum, and were called 'M' and 'D' toxins. The lettuce bioassay indicated that D-toxin caused less root growth inhibition than M-toxin. Chemical analysis indicated that M-toxin was a very unusual small peptide. D-toxin was shown to have chemical characteristics similar to helminthosporal based on ultraviolet, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectra. D-toxin was composed of at least two isomers.
Among 24 isolates of fluorescent Pseudomonads, 5 isolates named as LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4 and LPT5 were screened in vitro for their nematicidal activity against cyst forming nematode, Heterodera cajani causing patchiness, poor and stunting growth besides discoloration in Sesamum indicum. Second stage juveniles of H. cajani hatched from egg masses were collected from roots of host plant and subjected to fresh and heat-treated culture filtrate of isolates for 24 h. Mortality of H. cajani was recorded on the basis of parameters used for test organism bioassay. Among these isolates, Pseudomonas aeruginosa LPT5 caused maximum mortality towards second stage juvenile of H. cajani in vitro. Five isolates were used as seed coating for the management of cyst forming nematode H. cajani on sesame in green house condition. The strains LPT5 was better than the other strains in reducing the population of H. cajani both in vitro and in vivo. The reduction in cyst and juveniles population was found to be 49 and 60%, respectively when seeds were coated with strain LPT5. Among other strains, LPT4 was also found to inhibit the cyst and juveniles population 12 and 36% respectively. Increases in early vegetative plant growth parameters recorded in both in vitro and in vivo further revealed the significance of indigenous bacteria in comparison to introduced strain.
A sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) marker, which was tightly linked with the A1 mating type locus in Phytophthora infestans, was developed. During the random amplified polymorphic DNA-based phylogenic studies of 33 isolates of P infestans collected from year 2002 to 2004, we found an A1 mating type-specific DNA fragment. This 573-bp DNA fragment was generated only in the genomic DNA of the A1 mating types, when OPC-5 primer was used. Based on the specific DNA sequence, we designed the primer sets for generating the A1 mating type-specific 569-bp DNA fragment. When 33 genomic DNAs of P. infestans were subjected to PCR amplification using different primer combinations, the A1 mating type-specific DNA was amplified, when LB-1F and LB-2R primers were used. The specific 569-bp DNA fragment was generated only from all 18 A1 strains, but not from 15 A2 mating type strains. These results corresponded to the mating type discriminating bioassay of 33 isolates of P. infestans. Therefore, the primer combination of LB-1F/LB2R was chosen as a SCAR marker. Overall, this study indicates that the SCAR marker could be developed into a useful tool for mating type determination of P. infestans.
In a bioassay-guided search for acetylcholinesterase inhibitors from Korean natural resources, four isoquinoline alkaloids, corynoxidine (1), protopine (2), palmatine (3), and berberine (4) have been isolated from the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Corydalis speciosa. Structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic techniques. These compounds inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity in a dose-dependent manner, and the $IC_50$ values of compounds 1-4 were 89.0, 16.1, 5.8, and 3.3 $\mu$ M, respectively.
