  • Domestic thermal power plant fly ash is at a situation which emissions are increasing every year. Comparing to Fly Ash, Bottom Ash is only 15 %, but it's recycling rate is low, so most of them is being buried in the ground. However, landfill site of every power plant is full, and the construction of a new landfill is difficult. To solve this problem, the best solution is to use Bottom Ash as a landfill of large-scale civil engineering projects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the compression strength behavior characteristics of weak clay and uniaxial compression test to examine the applicability of surface soil solidification method of mixed soils mixed with industrial waste coal ash and weak clay which is buried in bulk. As a result of the test, the fluidity of the Mixed soil with clay + bottom ash + cement was improved to 200 mm at the water content of 91-92 %. The uniaxial compressive strength was also good for the mixed soils (clay + bottom ash + cement) meeting the required strength of 159 kN/㎡ at 28 days. However, the other samples did not meet the required strength. In this study, the prediction equations for the compression strength behavior by cement and curing period were presented.

  • Fly ash generated from (he pulverized coal power plant have caused the serious ocean pollution due to the disposal in the ash pond, the life reduction of a power plant and the waste of re-utilizable resource The research to reuse the unburned carbon and mineral composing of the ash has been progressed. In this study. the physical and chemical characteristics of high grade ash and unburned carbon particles obtained from countercurrent column flotation are investigated. The cleaned ash of the less 0,5% loss on Ignition(LOI) in carbon content is a spherical sphere and 39.8${\mu}m$ in size of MMD(Mass Median Diameter). 2.22 $m^2/g$ of specific area. The morphology of high LOI carbon particles is a amorphousness, 76.6 ${\mu}m$ of particle size and 15.2 $m^2/g$ of specific The high grade cleaned ash and the high LOI ash have some difference in the light of physical. chemical and morphological characteristics

  • The effect of fly ash addition to the kaolin block has been investigated. The addition affected the firing temperature and physical properties such as water absorption and compressive strength. The starting materials were from korea natural resources and the fly ash were from the power plant using coal as fuel, containing free carbon of 8∼9 wt%. The starting natural materials were mixed with 5 different proportions of fly ash, pressed and then sintered at 1050, 1100, 1150 and 1200${\circ}C$. With sintering temperature, water absorption decreased and compressive strength increased. When specimens were sintered at the temperature lower than 1100${\circ}C$, water absorption increased and strength decreased with fly ash content. In contrast, when sintering was done at the temperature higher than 1150${\circ}C$, water absorption increased with fly ash content similarly but strength was improved.

  • Fly ash has capacity to oxidize or adsorb mercury in a flue gas. Mercury oxidation and adsorption efficiencies of fly ash vary depending on the properties of fly ash. This study was designed to understand reaction characteristics of mercury with fly ash components. The fly ash components were tested to determine their oxidation and adsorption capabilities for elemental mercury and oxidized mercury. A sample was synthesized with fly ash components and tested. The test results were compared with those of the fly ash sample obtained from a coal-fired power plant. $Fe_2O_3$, CuO and carbon black showed higher oxidation or adsorption efficiency for elemental mercury while CaO, MgO, CuO and carbon black showed higher adsorption efficiency for mercury chloride. In addition, the synthesized sample showed comparable mercury oxidation and adsorption efficiencies to the fly ash sample.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the potassium availability of soybean grown on potted soil amended with 20% by weight of fly ash for two years of which the second year was done on its residual effect. Soybean growth was normal with incorporation of 20% fly ash. The increase in yield was accompanied by an increase in the potassium contents of plant and soil.

  • Post-consumer dairy HIPS bottles were gathered and recycled by the following processes; crushing into flakes, chemical treatment for the purpose of elimination aluminium caps, washing, and separation from other plastics, such as PP, PE, plasticized PVC These HIPS flakes were extruded into the chips using a single screw extruder. Recyclate HIPS chips were mixed with fly ash as an additive in the range of 5-50 wt%, which were formed from coal power plant. Recyclate HIPS chips mixed with fly ash were molded to investigate thermal and mechanical properties. Their samples, thermal and mechanical properties were measured via DSC, TGA, UTM, and impact strength analysis. The probable mechanical properties exhibited the range of 5∼30% fly ash contents for their applications.

  • Energetically-modified material using reject fly ash (RFA), generated from thermal power plants, was manufactured to investigate the effect of the material on the physical and chemical characteristics of cement mortar. In order to modify reject fly ash, a vibration mill was used. Particle size, grain shape, and crystal structure of the ash were analyzed. Then, the compressive strength of the mortar using energetically-modified reject fly ash (ERFA) was measured. Microstructure and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were also used in the analysis. As the replacement rate of ERFA increased, the value of the compressive strength tended to decrease. However, it was found that the compressive strength values of 7 and 28 days-cured specimens were higher than those of conventional ordinary Portland cement (OPC) mortar with 10 % replacement rate condition.

  • The most important and largest commercial outlet of fly ash in Korea is a replacement material of Portland cement in concrete industry. The high level of unburned carbon in ash brings about some malfunctions in concrete. Therefore, fly ash is refined to improve the quality as a concrete additive. In this process, a lot of the residual carbon is produced, and discarded now. In the present study, to find out a valuable outlet of the enriched carbon samples, the basic morphology of residual carbon in fly ash from Boryung power plant was investigated. The unburned carbon characterization included shape, size measurement, and chemical analysis was examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX).

  • The biodegradable mulching paper could be applied for the environmental friendly agriculture as an alternative to the current vinyl mulching. In order to increase the usability of the mulching paper, the effects of the addition of various inorganic materials on the functionality of the mulching paper were evaluated in terms of practical benefits. The blend of carbonized rice husk powder and perlite resulted in the higher value in the air permeability of the mulching paper, which would be important for the health of plant root. The heat conservative of the mulching paper could be improved by adding the bottom ash or the fly ash because of the pore structure of the ashes. The pH of acidic soil could be neutralized by using the mulching paper containing paper-mill sludge ash or fly ash. The various results showed the addition of the inorganic materials could improve the functional properties of the mulching paper.
