  • Radiative heating phenomena occurring in planetary entry flights are reviewed for the purpose of educating those who are not familiar with the problem. How the radiative heat transfer rates to the Apollo entry vehicle were measured and analyzed are first described. Next, the effects of thermo-chemical non-equilibrium on radiation are summarized. Then the radiation problems in entry flights into other planets are reviewed. Finally, unsolved problems are enumerated.

  • This paper attempts to study the evolution of the Solar System including the earth through various existing hypotheses and the occurrence of earthquakes on the earth. From the analysis of the various theories it can be inferred that the Mystery regarding evolution of Solar System is a complex problem which requires continuos research. The occurrence of the earthquake is also affected by the earth's rotation, which produces Centrifugal Force, which together with convection current causes plate displacement resulting in earthquakes. The extent of displacement varies with the size and density of the plates.

  • This paper reports the progress of a search for exoplanets with S-type orbits in short-period binary star systems. The selected targets have stellar orbital periods of just a few days. These systems are eclipsing binaries so that exoplanet transits, if planets exist, will be highly likely. We report the results for seven binary star systems.

  • Wangjo Silok, the official chronicle of Lee Dynasty, carries 131 records on the Kepler Supernova 1604; all of them are given in the present report. Among them 112 records are detailed descriptions about the observed brightness variation over the period from October 13, 1604 (the 37th year of King Sunjo) to April 23, 1605. On July 14, 1605, an addendum is given as a final assessment of the guest star incidence. Since the apparent brightness, size and position are carefully described as compared to bright planets and stars, these records are ideal for retrieving light curve of the Kepler Supernova over the seven month period. Simple procedures are suggested for the derivation of light curve.

  • "Circumstellar disks, exoplanets and the solar system" is the one of ALMA proposal categories, which is closely related to the one of the fundamental questions in astrophysics, " when, where, and how planets form". I will review the Cycle-0/1 observational results of this topic, which had only 16/32 antennas and the maximum angular resolutions of 0.45/0.16 arcsec at 345GHz at that time. Eventually, ALMA equipped with 66 antennas and 0.01 arcsec angular resolution will allow us to study details of the circumstellar disks with the 1AU resolution at the distance of 100pc.

  • I introduce the field of gravitational microlensing that I have worked on for more than 2 decades. I describe how microlensing can be applied to various fields in astrophysics including dark matter, Galactic structure, binary objects, and extrasolar planets and present my scientific achievements in the individual fields. I start with a description of basic microlensing physics and state how microlensing can be applied to various fields. Finally, I briefly describe ongoing efforts and future projects in microlensing.

  • From 146 B.C. to A.D. 1760, 363 sets of cometary observations have been recorded in Chinese Ancient Records of Celestial Phenomena. The positions of all recorded comets, or their paths, on the sky are compared. Taking into account the perturbations of all nine planets and using the numerical method of N-body problem, the orbits of well-recorded comets are calculated. Identification of a periodic comet is presented.

  • We determined the efficiencies of the aperture. beam and forward spillover and scattering of 13.7 m radio telescope at Daeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory through the observations of the planets and Moon. The main panels adjustments were carried out on September 1991 and the improvements in the efficiencies were checked by comparing the observations made before and after the panel adjustments. The efficiencies were turned out to be 0.35, 0,47 and 0.83 at 115.27 GHz for the aperture, beam and forward scattering and spillover. respectively. These marked nearly a factor of two upgrade of the efficiencies previously measured.

  • The Giant Magellan Telescope Integral-Field Spectrograph (GMTIFS) is a near-infrared imager and integral-field spectrograph, which will be the workhorse adaptive-optics (AO) instrument on the GMT when AO operations begin. We will describe the current design and proposed capabilities of the GMTIFS. We will also present a brief overview of GMTIFS science cases that include first-light objects, galaxy feedback and assembly, the nature of compact massive objects as well as the formation and evolution of stars and planets.
