A total of 28 wall panels were cast and tested under uniformly distributed axial load in one-way in-plane action to study the effect of slenderness ratio (SR) and aspect ratio (AR) on the ultimate load. Two concrete formulations, normal concrete (NC) and self compacting concrete (SCC), were used for the casting of wall panels. Out of 28 wall panels, 12 were made of NC and the remaining 16 panels were of SCC. All the 12 NC panels and 12 out of 16 SCC panels were used to study the influence of SR and the remaining 4 SCC panels were tested to study the effect of AR on the ultimate load. A brief review of studies available in literature on the strength and behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) wall panels is presented. Load-deformation response was recorded and analyzed. The ultimate load of SCC wall panels decreases non-linearly with the increase in SR and decreases linearly with increasing values of AR. Based on this study a method is proposed to predict the ultimate load of reinforced SCC wall panels. The modified method includes the effect of SR, AR and concrete strength.
Composite steel plate deep beam (CDB) is proposed as a lateral resisting member, which is constructed by steel plate and reinforced concrete (RC) panel, and it is connected with building frame through high-strength bolts. To investigate the seismic performance of the CDB, tests of two 1/3 scaled specimens with different length-to-height ratio were carried out under cyclic loads. The failure modes, load-carrying capacity, hysteretic behavior, ductility and energy dissipation were obtained and analyzed. In addition, the nonlinear finite element (FE) models of the specimens were established and verified by the test results. Besides, parametric analyses were performed to study the effect of length-to-height ratio, height-to-thickness ratio, material type and arrangement of RC panel. The experimental and numerical results showed that: the CDBs lost their load-carrying capacity because of the large out-of plane deformation and yield of the tension field formed on the steel plate. By increasing the length-to-height ratio of steel plate, the load-carrying capacity, elastic stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens were significantly enhanced. The ultimate loading capacity increased with increasing the length-to-height ratio of steel plate and yield strength of steel plate; and such capacity increased with decreasing of height-to-thickness ratio of steel plate and gap. Finally, a unified formula is proposed to calculate their ultimate loading capacity, and fitting formula on such indexes are provided for designation of the CDB.

In this paper, the effect of material properties on fracture behavior was studied using cohesive zone model and extended finite element method. The rectangular tensile specimen with a central inclined initial crack was modeled by plane stress elements. In the CZM modeling, cohesive elements were inserted between every bulk elements in the predicted crack propagation region before analysis, while in the XFEM the enrichment to the elements was added as needed during analysis. The crack propagation behavior was examined for brittle and ductile materials. For thin specimen configuration, wrinkle deformation was accounted for by geometrically nonlinear post-buckling analysis and the effect of wrinkling on the crack propagation was investigated.
In this research, mechanical buckling of hybrid functionally graded plates is considered using a new four variable refined plate theory. Unlike any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved is only four, as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The theory presented is variationally consistent, does not require shear correction factor, and gives rise to transverse shear stress variation such that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness satisfying shear stress free surface conditions. The plate properties are assumed to be varied through the thickness following a simple power law distribution in terms of volume fraction of material constituents. Governing equations are derived from the principle of minimum total potential energy. The closed-form solution of a simply supported rectangular plate subjected to in-plane loading has been obtained by using the Navier method. The effectiveness of the theories is brought out through illustrative examples.

The directional response of strength and deformation on the rocks acting by external loads is called by strength and deformability anisotropy, respectively. Peak strength and its failure criteria of anisotro rocks have been studied and reported. Many authors have investigated in detail the behavior of triaxial peak strength of anisotropic rocks(Jaeger 1960, McLamore & Gray 1967, Hoek & Brown 1980, Ramamurthy & Rao 1985). They concluded that the triaxial strength of anisotropic rocks varies according to the inclination of discontinuity in specimens. And, the minimun triaxial strength occurs in the specmen with 60° of inclination angle ; and specimens with 0° or 90° inclination have maximum triaxial strength. Based on the experimental result, the behavior triaxial strength is investigated. The triaxial compression tests due to the angle bedding plane have been conducted and the material constants, 'm' and 's', cohesion and angle of friction and nonlinear strength parameters to fit for the failure criterion were derived from the regression analysis. And, the experimental date are employed to examine three existing failure criteria for peak strength, provided by Jaeger, McLamore and Hoek & Brown and Ramamurthy & Rao. For a shale, the suitability of the failure criteiria of triaxial peak strength for anisotropic rocks is discussed.

For the prediction of the crack growth initiation from a blunt notch or a precrack in a prestrained material under plane strain tension and small-scale yielding conditions, a microscopic fracture criterion is proposed in terms of the crack tip opening displacement(COD) needed for the attainment of fracture strain at a microstructural distance. Smooth blunting of a crack tip with an initial root radius is assumed, and strain distributions on the crack-line axis are calculated at each deformation stage until the distributions against an original distance normalized to the COD are insensitive to an initial root radius. This case of no initial-root-radius effect is taken as for a sharp crack tip, on which the criterion is applied to determine the characteristic length of material from a critical COD for a fatigue-precracked specimen. The predicted COD at the fracture initiation from a crack with an initial root radius or a prestraining shows reasonable agreement with experimental values.

Residual stress is one of the causes which make defects in engineering components and materials. Many methods have been developing to measure the residual stress. Though these methods provide the information of the residual stress, they also have disadvantage like a little damage, time consumption, etc. In this paper, we devised a new experimental technique to measure residual stress in materials with a combination of laser speckle pattern interferometry and spot heating. The speckle pattern interferometer measures in-plane deformation during the heat provides for much localized stress relief. 3-D shape is used for determining heat temperature and other parameters. The residual stresses are determined by the amount of strain that is measured subsequent to the heat and cool-down of the region being interrogated. A simple model is presented to provide a description of the method. In this paper, we could experimentally confirm that residual stress can be measured by using laser interferometry and spot heating method.

This paper presents the details of finite element (FE) modeling and analysis of an external prestressing technique to strengthen a prestressed concrete (PSC) end block. Various methods of external prestressing techniques have been discussed. In the proposed technique, transfer of external force is in shear mode on the end block creating a complex stress distribution. The proposed technique is useful when the ends of the PSC girders are not accessible. Finite element modeling issues have been outlined. Brief description about material nonlinearity including key aspects in modeling inelastic behaviour has been provided. Finite element (FE) modeling including material, loading has been explained in depth. FE analysis for linear and nonlinear static analysis has been conducted for varying external loadings. Various responses such as out-of-plane deformation and slip have been computed and compared with the corresponding experimental observations. From the study, it has been observed that the computed slope and slip of the steel bracket under external loading is in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations.
The functions of diaphragms at abutments and piers of PSC box girder railway bridge are to transfer forces from the superstructure onto bearings or columns and to stiffen the superstructure cross-section against in -plane deformation. Due to stress disturbance at diaphragm, the design for the diaphragm using conventional design method is relatively irrational than those for other structural members. And, due to contribution to boundary condition of deck slab by the diaphragm, the behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm is different from that of the deck slab obtained from two dimensional analysis of the bridge, which is basis for the design of deck slab. In this paper, three dimensional behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm of prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder railway bridge constructed by the precast span method are analyzed by using three dimensional finite element modeling and using the strut-and-tie model design of the diaphragm are presented. The modeling techniques used in this paper can be applied effectively to examine the causes of cracks at deck slab near diaphragm and to design diaphragm rationally.
In this work, we have employed the strain gradient plasticity theory to investigate the effect of material size on the deformation behavior in metal forming process. Flow stress is expressed in terms of strain, strain gradient (spatial derivative of strain) and intrinsic material length. The least square method coupled with strain gradient plasticity was used to calculate the components of strain gradient at each element of material. For demonstrating the size effect, the proposed approach has been applied to plane compression process and micro rolling process. Results show when the characteristic length of the material comes to the intrinsic material length, the effect of strain gradient is noteworthy. For the microcompression, the additional work hardening at higher strain gradient regions results in uniform distribution of strain. In the case of micro-rolling, the strain gradient is remarkable at the exit section where the actual reduction of the rolling finishes and subsequently strong work hardening take places at the section. This results in a considerable increase in rolling force. Rolling force with the strain gradient plasticity considered in analysis increases by 20% compared to that with conventional plasticity theory.
