  • This study is about an antenna implemented in the form of a monopole having a hexagonal symmetric pattern by simplifying the modified Hilbert curve fractal monopole structure. The modified Hilbert curve fractal monopole structure was simplified and miniaturized, and the radiator was implemented in a hexagonal symmetrical pattern to improve performance. The dielectric constant of substrate is 4.7, and the total line length with a meander-shaped symmetrical structure is 59 mm. The size of the antenna is 10 mm × 10 mm × 0.8 mm, and the line width is 0.4 mm. The size of the antenna measuring jig is 64 mm × 21 mm × 1 mm. The resonant frequency is 1.57 GHz, and the frequency range is 1.51 to 1.615 GHz. The frequency bandwidth is 105 MHz. As for the antenna gain, the measurement gain of the YZ-plane was 2.32 dBi, and that of the XZ-plane was -1.03 dBi. As a result, we confirmed that antenna miniaturization is possible using a hexagonal symmetric pattern fractal structure. In addition, we confirmed that the antenna performance can be easily improved by changing the structure of the radiator.

  • The influences of stress triaxiality on ductile fracture have been investigated for various specimens and structures. With respect to a transferability issue, recently, the interests on local approaches reflecting micromechanical specifics are increased again due to rapid progress of computational environments. In this paper, the applicability of the local approaches has been examined through a series of finite element analyses incorporating modified GTN and Rousselier models as well as fracture toughness tests. The ductile crack growth of nuclear carbon steels is assessed to verify the transferability among compact tension (CT) specimens with different in-plane size. At first, the basic material constants were calibrated for standard CT specimens and used to predict fracture resistance (J-R) curves of larger CT specimens. Then, the in-plane size effects were examined by comparing the numerically estimated J-R curves with the experimentally determined ones. The assessment results showed that the in-plane size effect should be considered for realistic engineering application and the damage models might be used as useful tool for ductile fracture evaluation.

  • If arches are braced by lateral restraints, the ultimate strength of arches is determined by in-plane buckling and plastic bending collapse. This paper is conducted to investigate the in-plane nonlinear elastic and inelastic buckling behavior and the strength of fixed parabolic arches in uniform compresion, as well as to study arch behaviors against non-uniform in-plane compression and bending. As shown by the results, the limit slenderness ratio is suggested to classify the bucklingmode. Buckling strength of fixed parabolic arches under uniform compresion are evaluated using buckling curve for a straight column. Finally, an interaction e quation for arches under combined axial compresion and bending action is proposed.

  • The plane stress fracture toughness for thin aluminum alloy(2024-T3 and 7075-T6) specimens are characterized by using compact-tension (CT) specimens. Anti-buckling plates were fabricated on both sides of the thin CT specimens to prevent the buckling phenomena which caused by the 45.deg. C plastic yielding at the crack tip under the plane stress condition. The plane stress fracture toughnesses determined by three different procedures are compared with each others. The plane stress fracture toughnesses are also compared with a few published values which were determined by using center-cracked panel specimens.

  • Enhancement methods of sensitivity to in-plane strain measurement by micro-ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) technique were proposed using TiN and Au thin films. Micro-tensile strain over the micro-tensile specimens, prepared in micro-scale by those films, was measured by micro-tensile loading system and micro-ESPI system developed in this study. The subsequent measurement of in-plane tensile strain in the micro-sized specimens was introduced using the micro-ESPI technique, and the micro-tensile stress-strain curves for these films were determined. To enhance the sensitivity to measurement of in-plane tensile strain, algorithms of the phase estimation by using curve fitting of inter-fringe and the discrete Fourier Transform with object-induced dynamic phase shifting were developed. Using these two algorithms, the micro-tensile strain-stress curves were generated. It is shown that the algorithms for enhancement of the sensitivity suggested in this study make the sensitivity to measurement of the in-plane tensile strain increase.

  • In tropical geometry, the sum of two numbers is defined as the minimum, and the multiplication as the sum. We learned that dynamic programming in tropical algebraic geometry can be used to find the shortest path in graphs. We have also learned about the Bezout's Theorem, which is a theorem concerning the intersections of tropical plane curves, and the stable intersection principle.

  • This paper experimentally deals with the vibration characteristics of flat ring transducers used for ultrasonic sensors and actuators. Radial vibration mode, which is the fundamental mode of a thin piezoelectric transducer, was measured by a laser in-plane vibrometer. An impedance analyzer was used to measure natural frequencies. The results measured by experiments verified theoretical predictions. The vibration characteristics of ring transducers were identified according to the outer diameter size. The shape of the fundamental mode is almost uniform but slightly decreases from the inner to the outer circumferential surfaces. The natural frequency of the fundamental mode decreases as the outer diameter increases. It appears that the ring type transducer is suitable to excite uniformly distributed vibration on a flat surface.

  • This paper presents effects of impeller geometrical parameters on the performance of a centrifugal pump impeller. The effects of meridional parameters and vane plane development parameters on the performance of the impeller were numerically studied using a commercial CFD code and DOE(design of experiments) software. Geometrical parameters in a method of meridional view and vane plane development were selected and defined to generate the 3D impeller shape. The response variables are defined in a total head and efficiency curve with flow rate. The influences of selected design variables on the various objective functions were examined as a result of the calculation using 2k factorial.
