This paper aims to contribute to the three-dimensional generalization of numerical prediction of crack propagation through the formulation of finite elements with embedded discontinuities. The analysis of crack propagation in two-dimensional problems yields lines of discontinuity that can be tracked in a relatively simple way through the sequential construction of straight line segments oriented according to the direction of failure within each finite element in the solid. In three-dimensional analysis, the construction of the discontinuity path is more complex because it requires the creation of plane surfaces within each element, which must be continuous between the elements. In the method proposed by Chaves (2003) the crack is determined by solving a problem analogous to the heat conduction problem, established from local failure orientations, based on the stress state of the mechanical problem. To minimize the computational effort, in this paper a new strategy is proposed whereby the analysis for tracking the discontinuity path is restricted to the domain formed by some elements near the crack surface that develops along the loading process. The proposed methodology is validated by performing three-dimensional analyses of basic problems of experimental fractures and comparing their results with those reported in the literature.

Samsung Thales has developed a small-sized autonomous underwater vehicle "BOTO" verified by a mathematical model simulation. The hydrodynamic coefficients and drag force were experimented at circulating water channel for validating cruising performance of the AUV. Based on the mathematical model, we simulated turning radius and way-point tracking on horizontal plane using way-point tracking algorithm. In this paper we introduce the vehicle system and the sea trial test results will be shown.
We have examined the effect on neck-muscle activation of altering whole body posture. A Rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) was trained to produce sinusoidal (0.25 Hz) head tracking movements in the sagittal plane when seated with trunk and head vertical or while standing in the quadrupedal position. Video-fluoroscopic images of cervical vertebral motion, and electromyographic (EMG) responses were recorded simultaneously. Results demonstrated that vertebral motion varied with body posture, occurring synchronously between all joints in the upright position and primarily at skull-$C_1$ when in the quadrupedal position. Muscle EMG activation was significantly greater (P<0.001) in the quadrupedal position than when upright for all muscles except semispinalis cervicis. Peak activation of all the muscles occurred prior to peak head extension in the quadrupedal position, suggesting synchronous activity between muscles. Data suggest that, when upright, muscles were activated in functional groupings defined by their anatomical arrangement. In the quadrupedal position, gravity acting on the horizontally oriented head produced greater activation and a collective response of the muscles.
Structural integrity can be accessed from dynamic deformations of structures. Moreover, dynamic deformations can be acquired from non-contact sensors such as video cameras. Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi (KLT) algorithm is one of the commonly used methods for motion tracking. However, averaging throughout the extracted features would induce bias in the measurement. In addition, pixel-wise measurements can be converted to physical units through camera intrinsic. Still, the depth information is unreachable without prior knowledge of the space information. The assigned homogeneous coordinates would then mismatch manually selected feature points, resulting in measurement errors during coordinate transformation. In this study, a two-stage optimization method for video-based measurements is proposed. The manually selected feature points are first optimized by minimizing the errors compared with the homogeneous coordinate. Then, the optimized points are utilized for the KLT algorithm to extract displacements through inverse projection. Two additional criteria are employed to eliminate outliers from KLT, resulting in more reliable displacement responses. The second-stage optimization subsequently fine-tunes the geometry of the selected coordinates. The optimization process also considers the number of interpolation points at different depths of an image to reduce the effect of out-of-plane motions. As a result, the proposed method is numerically investigated by using a truss bridge as a physics-based graphic model (PBGM) to extract high-accuracy displacements from recorded videos under various capturing angles and structural conditions.
In this paper, we propose a highly precise vehicle detection method with low false alarm using billboard sweep stereo matching and multi-stage hypothesis generation. First, we capture stereo images from cameras established in front of the vehicle and obtain the disparity map in which the regions of ground plane or background are removed using billboard sweep stereo matching algorithm. And then, we perform the vehicle detection and tracking on the labeled disparity map. The vehicle detection and tracking consists of three steps. In the learning step, the SVM(support vector machine) classifier is obtained using the features extracted from the gabor filter. The second step is the vehicle detection which performs the sobel edge detection in the image of the left camera and extracts candidates of the vehicle using edge image and billboard sweep stereo disparity map. The final step is the vehicle tracking using template matching in the next frame. Removal process of the tracking regions improves the system performance in the candidate region of the vehicle on the succeeding frames.

Typically, vision-based AR systems operate on the basis of prior knowledge of the environment such as a square marker. The traditional marker-based AR system has a limitation that the marker has to be located in the sensing range. Therefore, there have been considerable research efforts for the techniques known as real-time camera tracking, in which the system attempts to add unknown 3D features to its feature map, and these then provide registration even when the reference map is out of the sensing range. In this paper, we describe a real-time camera tracking framework specifically designed to track a monocular camera in a desktop workspace. Basic idea of the proposed scheme is that a real-time camera tracking is achieved on the basis of a plane tracking algorithm. Also we suggest a method for re-detecting features to maintain registration of virtual objects. The proposed method can cope with the problem that the features cannot be tracked, when they go out of the sensing range. The main advantage of the proposed system are not only low computational cost but also convenient. It can be applicable to an augmented reality system for mobile computing environment.

Jaw motion tracking, which is introduced in recent case reports, is a method which records the patient's individualized pathway of the mandibular movements along with facebow transfer, and reproduces the information in the virtual space of computer-aided-design/computer-aided-manufacturing (CAD-CAM) software. In this present case, a collapse of the occlusal plane was observed, due the loss of posterior teeth for a long period. Full-mouth rehabilitation with an increase in the occlusal vertical dimension was planned. First, the patient's mandibular movements were recorded on the newly established jaw relation by jaw tracking, and this information was assembled with the patient's intraoral data to create a virtual patient. Implant planning and diagnostic wax-up was done on the virtual patient, leading the fabrication of the provisional prosthesis. On the newly established jaw relation with an increase in the occlusal vertical dimension, canine guidance of the provisional prosthesis was checked. Finally, the provisional prosthesis was carried out to the definitive prosthesis. Using the advantages of the technologies in the digital dentistry, the patient was satisfied with the function and the esthetics after the treatment.

In this paper, we propose a robust curved lane marking detection method. Several lane detection methods have been proposed, however most of them have considered only straight lanes. Compared to the number of straight lane detection researches, less number of curved-lane detection researches has been investigated. This paper proposes a new curved lane detection and tracking method which is robust to various illumination conditions. First, the proposed methods detect straight lanes using a robust road feature image. Using the geometric relation between a vehicle camera and the road plane, several circle models are generated, which are later projected as curved lane models on the camera images. On the top of the detected straight lanes, the curved lane models are superimposed to match with the road feature image. Then, each curve model is voted based on the distribution of road features. Finally, the curve model with highest votes is selected as the true curve model. The performance and efficiency of the proposed algorithm are shown in experimental results.

This note suggests a stepwise fuzzy moving sliding surface using Sugeno-type fuzzy system and presents a sliding mode control scheme using it. The fuzzy system has the angle of state error vector and the distance from the origin in the phase plane as inputs and a first-order linear differential equation as output. The surface initially passes arbitrary initial states and subsequently moves towards a predetermined surface via rotating or shifting. This method reduces the reaching and tracking time and improves robustness. Conceptually the slope of the Proposed fuzzy moving sliding surface increases stepwise in the stable region of the phase plane. The surface, however, rotates continuously because the surface is a fuzzy system. The asymptotic stability of the fuzzy sliding surface is proved. The validity of the proposed control scheme is shown in computer simulation for a second-order nonlinear system.

This paper presents the guidance and control design for automatic carrier landing of a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). Differently from automatic landing on a runway on the ground, the motion of a carrier deck is not fixed and affected by external factors such as ship movement and sea state. For this reason, robust guidance/control law is required for safe shipboard landing by taking the relative geometry between the UAV and the carrier deck into account. In this work, linear quadratic optimal controller and longitudinal/lateral trajectory tracking guidance algorithm are developed based on a linear UAV model. The feasibility of the proposed control scheme and guidance law for the carrier landing are verified via numerical simulations using X-Plane and Matlab/simulink.
