Effect of a Conductor Cladding on a Dielectric Slab for Coupling with a Side-polished Fiber

  • A theoretical presentation by using a three-dimensional finite difference beam propagating method (3-D FD-BPM) for the evanescent coupling is offered with respect to the refractive indexes between a side-polished optical fiber and an infinitely planar waveguide with a conductor cladding (PWGCC). The PWG is suspended at a constant distance from an unclad fiber core and attached with a perfect conductor (PEC) on one side. The coupling and propagation of light are found to depend on both the relationship between the refractive index values of two structures and the configuration of the side-polished fiber used in the PWGCC. The spreading of light in the unconfined direction of a PWGCC is presented with the distribution of electric fields in xy - plane and the absolute amplitude of electric fields along the x and y axis. The power of the light propagation in a fiber decreases exponentially along the fiber axis as it is transferred to the PWGCC, where it is carried away.

  • Over the past few years, due to the great development of optical communications, an increasing R&D activity has been focused on the design and manufacture of the integrated optic amplifiers, with particular reference to their application in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) systems. In this technological context, rare-earth-doped oxide glasses, which had been widely used for solid state lasers, gained much attention as highly performing materials in the third telecom window, around 1.5 micron. The aim of the present paper is to provide a brief overview of the progress made, with particular reference to the authors' work in this area, and to shortly discuss its perspectives.

  • 광통신의 최종 목적은 각 가정까지 광섬유를 연결하여 일반인들도 많은 정보를 신속하고 쉽게 접할 수 있게 하는 것, 즉, 광가입자망(Fiber To The Home, FTTH)의 실현이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 여러 가지 문제점으로 인해 아직까지는 일부 실험 지역 내에 국한되어 있다. 광가입자망의 실현을 위한 이론적 방법으로 광섬유를 정보 전달소에서 각 가정까지 직접 연결하는 것이 있으나, 이 방법은 경제적 면에서 경쟁력을 갖출 수 없을 뿐 아니라 물리적인 부피 증가로 인해 현실적으로 실현 불가능하다고 할 수 있다.   • 광 집적회로의 필요성에 의해 평면형 광소자의 개발이 다각도로 연구되고 있다. 그 중 유리의 광민감성을 이용한 것으로 직접 UV를 조사하여 광도파로를 만드는 방법이 최근 관심을 얻고 있다. 이러한 direct UV-writing 방법을 이용한 경우는 광도과로를 위한 식각 과정을 거치지 않고도 광도파로를 제작할 수 있는 장점이 있다. UV-writing을 이용한 광도파로 형성을 위해서는 undercladding층, core층, overcladding층으로 이루어진 구조의 박막을 제조해야 하며, 특히 빛이 도파되는 core 부분은 UV 조사에 따라 굴절률이 증가하는 광민감성이 높은 물질로 구성되어야 한다. UV조사에 따라 굴절률이 증가하는 광민감성이 높은 물질로 구성되어야 한다.   • This paper presents a new microwave oscillator incorporating a corrugated coplanar waveguide (CCPW) electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure as its terminating resonance component. The use of a compact CCPW EBG structure was effective in reducing the phase noise and improving the harmonic characteristics of the microwave oscillator circuit without additional backside processing and drastic size increment. The fully planar CCPW oscillator oscillating at the frequency of 5.41 GHz showed a phase noise characteristic of -90.7 dBc/Hz at 100kHz offset and a second harmonic suppression of 42.67 dB.

Substrate Integrated Waveguide Power Divider Fed Dual-Dipole Array Antenna

  • In the paper, a printed dual-dipole array antenna is presented. A 4-way planar SIW power divider is adopted for feeding the array antenna. The dual-dipole is adopted as radiation elements which greatly improves the impedance band. The measured bandwidth larger than 31 % for VSWR$\leq$1.5 operating near 14 GHz is achieved and in agreement with the simulated results. The radiation E-plane and H-plane radiation pattern is presented in the paper. The radiation gain is also presented in the paper.

  • In millimeter wave applications, it is often necessary to use transitions between waveguide and planar circuits. Finline structures can be used effectively to this purpose. In multilayered case, it is necessary to analyze the structure with numerical method such as spectral domain immittance method. The design procedure uses tile cutoff frequency for each taper width. The dispersion data in a single layer are compared with those in literature. The performance of the designed finline taper is verified with the FEM simulation using HFSS.

  • A double diffusion technique is developed to enhance the effective mode index of optical waveguides in $LiTaO_3$. It consists of Zn diffusion from the vapor phase at relatively low temperatures (750->$800^{\circ}C$), into waveguides initially produced by Ti indiffusion at higher temperature (1150->$1200^{\circ}C$). Both X- and Z-cut substrates are investigated. A model that combines profiles of both diffusion is formulated to calculate the expected effective index values for planar waveguides. Good agreement is found between experimental results and model predictions which assume that the initial Ti profile is not affected by the lower temperature Zn diffusion. Effective index enhancements as high as 0.005 and 0.003 are obtained by this method for the fundamental extraordinary and ordinary modes, respectively.

  • In this paper, we analyze the microwave characteristics of traveling-wave electro-absorption modulator (TW-EAM) considering the microwave feedline and the impedance mismatch. The TW-EAM is analyzed by using the equivalent circuit model. The capacitance and the inductance of the equivalent circuit are evaluated by using 3-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, while the microwave feedline is analyzed by momentum method. In a viewpoint of microwave characteristics, we present the effect of the structure and the length of microwave feedline.
