  • Although it is a rare developmental malformation, van der Woude syndrome is the most common form of syndromic orofacial clefting, accounting for approximately 2% of all cleft cases. The lower lip pits with or without a cleft lip or palate is characteristic of the syndrome. Findings, such as hypodontia, limb deformities, popliteal webs, ankylogossia, ankyloblepheron, and genitourinary and cardiovascular abnormalities, are rarely associated with the syndrome. This paper reports a rare case of van der Woude syndrome in a 10-year-old male patient with a single median lower lip pit and a repaired bilateral cleft lip and cleft palate that were associated with microstomia, hypodontia, and clubbing of the left foot with syndactyly of the second to fifth lesser toes of the same foot.

  • In order to construct the farm road in Shi-Hwa project, coarse soils excavated from hillsides have been used as road materials for reclamation. Suitable borrow pits available in land are now limited and also they bring about environmental problems when soils are excavated at the borrow pits and transported to the site. When using fine and wet materials as fill, however, many engineering problems can be encountered. Usually, the materials have high water contents, low strength, and high compressibility. In order to use them, we need research that can improve the inherent properties of those materials. In order to tackle with the problems, researches on soil improvement involve mixing lime geo-cement to the fine wet soils. A lab model test is necessary to verify effectiveness and comparison of those techniques. A field test is also required to show applicability and to find problems that may exist in the design and construction stages.

  • We are developing a phase change etching technology using an inorganic photoresist of GeSbTe film which is the recording material of the phase change disc. A selective etching phenomenon between amorphous and crystalline states can be utilized with an alkaline etchant. Phase-change pits could be formed using this technique, in which the etching selectivity is strongly dependent on the concentration of the etchant. The degree of etching was investigated by the transmittance between crystalline and amorphous films after the wet-etching. The pits patterned on the disc could be observed by AFM after wet-etching.

  • The mechanism of the blowhole and the pit formation in lap-jointed fillet CO₂ arc welds of Zn-coated steel sheet was established by the direct observation of the gas behavior in the molten pool with the high speed camera system. Main conclusions obtained are as follows1) Some blowholes were formed by incomplete back-filling to the pits at the last stage of the solidification. This type of blowhole was formed through four stages of gas in the molten pool, incubation, explosion, back-filling and completion of back-filling stage.2) Most of the pits was back-filled at the last stage of their formation. • Gas nitriding is a surface hardening process where nitrogen is introduced into the surface of a ferrous alloy. During fusion welding of nitrided carbon steel, the nitride inside weld metal is dissolved and generates nitrogen gas, which causes porosities - blow holes and pits. In this study, several laser welding processes such as weaving welding, two-pass welding, dual beam welding and laser-arc hybrid welding were investigated to elongate the weld pool to enhance nitrogen gas evacuation. The surface pits were successfully eliminated with elongated weld pool. However blowholes inside the weld metal were effective reduced but not fully disappeared.

  • It is inevitable that corrosion pits have occurred on the marine propeller. If corrosion pits have occurred on the blades, they have been repaired by simple welding methods. It must be that the strength is degraded in this process. In this paper, we analyzed and compared the strength of A1BC3 and HBsCl used for marine propeller after repairing the artificial pit by several different methods.

  • Typical weathering landforms and phenomena including tafoni and gnamma are usually interpreted as man-made alteo (praying water bowl) or dragon-alteo by folklore researchers. Despite some terminological ambiguity, they are certainly natural weathering pits and are introduced in our discipline for fifty years, however, unfortunately most of them are interpreted as petroglyphs used and prepared for ritual ceremony. Several seemingly artificially-made rock holes are also found in many places, but most of them are weathered landforms by salt weathering. Author believes that communication effort to use common language and publish more researches in interdisciplinary journals are very essential to propagate scientific achievements made by geomorphologists to other discipline. Also geomorphologists specialized in weathering processes are encouraged to participate in preservation of stone artifacts and archaeological remains.

  • Pitting corrosion commonly shaped in hull structure due to marine corrosive environment seriously causes the deterioration of structural performance. This paper deals with the ultimate strength behaviors of stiffened ship panels damaged by the pits subjected to uniaxial compression. A series of no-linear finite element analyses are carried out for three stiffened panels using ABAQUS software. Influences of the investigated typical parameters of pit degree (DOP), depth, location and distribution on the ultimate strength strength are discussed in detail. It is found that the ultimate strength is significantly reduced with increasing the DOP and pit depth and severely affected by the distribution. In addition, the pits including their distributions on the web have a slight effect on the ultimate strength. Compared with regular distribution, random one on the panel result in a change of collapse mode. Finally, an empirical formula as a function of corrosion volume loss is proposed for predicting the ultimate strength of stiffened panel.

  • In Van der Woude syndrome (VWS), a rare congenital disease, lower lip pits (LLPs) can cause an aesthetically significant deformity. Surgical treatment of LLPs is necessary if they cause recurrent inflammation or aesthetic problems. Intraoperatively, surgeons should keep in mind the possibility of deep extension of the sinus tract and the relative deficiency of the midline in VWS, which increases the risk of lip disfigurement. Herein, we emphasize the importance of using a tissue-preserving technique to improve aesthetic results in VWS patients with a sinus tract.
