  • In order to achieve a gearless construction of the wind energy conversion system(WECS), a low-speed generator should be used. Of the various candidate machine types, radial-field, multi-pole, permanent magnet, synchronous machines may be used for low-speed applications. So, this paper deals with the design of direct-coupled, multi-pole radial field machines with permanent magnet(PM) excitation for wind power applications for cogging torque reduction through the determination of optimum pole arc/pitch ratio. On the basis of an equivalent magnetic circuit method(EMCM) and a space harmonic method(SHM), an initial design is performed considering restricted conditions. And then, a detailed design is made using a non-linear finite element analyses(FEA). Finally, test results concerning generating characteristics are given to confirm the validation of the design.

  • An experimental study is conducted to investigate the turbulent wake flow around tubes in vertical single row tube banks. All measurements are performed at Reynolds number(Re$_{max}$) 4.2*10$_{3}$ - 2.5*10$_{4}$ with varying tube spacings from the wide pitch ratio(H/D=3.07) to the very narrow one(H/D=1.23). Flow patterns are visualized using the smoke-wire method. Mean static pressures, velocity components, and various statistical quantities of turbulence are obtained by the computer on-line technique. In the case of wide tube spacings, the near wakes of tube show similar trends to those of a single tube, and their flow indicats an anisotropic turbulence. However, as the pitch ratio decreases, wide and narrow wakes appear alternately behind adjacent tubes due to the deflected flow. Also, in the case of H/D .leq. 1.54, Karman vortex is not formed at the side of relatively wide wake.e.

  • Sinusoidal back-EMF waveform of vernier Permanent Magnet (PM) machines is analyzed in this paper. An analytical expression of Electromotive Force (EMF) of electric machines including vernier machines is developed to analyze EMF harmonics, and the effect of vernier PM machine pole ratio, the ratio of number of rotor poles to stator poles, on the EMF waveform. Moreover, this paper represents several Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models to verify the analysis based on the proposed expression, and the effect of tooth width ratio, which is the ratio of tooth width to tooth pitch, on back-EMF of vernier PM machines, and optimal tooth width ratio is obtained and verified by FEA. Finally, this paper makes comparisons between EMF waveform of vernier PM machines and that of traditional PM machines from the point of view of analytical EMF expression.

  • This paper describes the aeroelastic stability test of the small-scaled 'Next-Generation Blade(NRSB)' with NRSH (Next-Generation Hub System) and HCTH hingeless hub system in hover and forward flight conditions. Excitation tests of rotor system installed in GSRTS(General Small-scale Rotor Test System) at KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) were tarried out to get lead-lag damping ratio of blades with flexures as hub flexure. MBA(Moving Block Analysis) technique was used for the estimation of lead-lag damping ratio. First, NRSB-1F blades with HCTH hub system, Then NRSB-1F with NRSH hub system were tested. Second, NRSB-2F blades with NRSH hub system were tested. Tests were done on the ground and in the wind tunnel according to the test conditions of hover and forward flight, respectively. Non-rotating natural frequencies, non-rotating damping ratios and rotating natural frequencies were showed similar level fir each cases. Estimated damping ratios of NRSB-1F, NRSB-2F with HCTH and NRSH were above 0.5%, and damping ratio increased by collective pitch angle increasement. Furthermore damping ratios of NRSB-2F were higher than damping ratios of NRSB-1F in high pitch angle. It was confirmed that the blade design for noise reduction would give observable improvement in aeroelastic stability compared to paddle blade and NRSB-1F design.

  • This paper addresses a voice personality transformation algorithm which makes one person's voices sound as if another person's voices. In the proposed method, one person's voices are represented by LPC cepstrum, pitch period and speaking rate, the appropriate transformation rules for each Parameter are constructed. The Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is used to model one speaker's LPC cepstrums and conditional probability is used to model the relationship between two speaker's LPC cepstrums. To obtain the parameters representing each probabilistic model. a Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation method is employed. The transformed LPC cepstrums are obtained by using a Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) criterion. Pitch period and speaking rate are used as the parameters for prosody transformation, which is implemented by using the ratio of the average values. The proposed method reveals the superior performance to the previous VQ-based method in subjective measures including average cepstrum distance reduction ratio and likelihood increasing ratio. In subjective test. we obtained almost the same correct identification ratio as the previous method and we also confirmed that high qualify transformed speech is obtained, which is due to the smoothly evolving spectral contours over time.

  • In this paper, a single-bit 2nd-order delta-sigma modulator with the architecture of cascaded-of-integrator feedforward (CIFF) is proposed for column-parallel analog-to-digital converter (ADC) array used in a low noise CMOS image sensor. The proposed modulator implements two switched capacitor integrators and a single-bit comparator within only 10-㎛ column-pitch for column-parallel ADC array. Also, peripheral circuits for driving all column modulators include a non-overlapping clock generator and a bias circuit. The proposed delta-sigma modulator has been implemented in a 110-nm CMOS process. It achieves 88.1-dB signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR), 88.6-dB spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR), and 14.3-bit effective-number-of-bits (ENOB) with an oversampling ratio (OSR) of 418 for 12-kHz bandwidth. The area and power consumption of the delta-sigma modulator are 970×10 ㎛2 and 248 ㎼, respectively.

  • In this study, pressure drop and heat transfer coefficients were measured in tubes with three dimensional roughness. Dimples were made by rotating the saw-tooth shaped finning disc on the outer tube surface. Resultant dimple shape was oval. Friction and heat transfer tests were performed with a range of roughness variables-roughness height 'e', axial roughness pitch 'p', circumferential roughness pitch 'z'. Within the test range, tube with e=0.5mm, z=5mm, p=3mm performed best. The efficiency ratio(rati of the heat transfer improvement and the pressure drop increase) of the tube approached 1.0 at low Reynolds number, and it was higher than that of the two-dimensional roughess tube of the same roughness height. Test data were predicted by 'discrete element method'. Results show that discrete element method underpredicts the friction data by 2% to 32%, and overpredicts the heat transfer data by-12% to 113%.

  • An experiment was carried out to evaluate the thermal performance of the wire-coil inserts method. Tested were the smooth tubes with the wire-nil inserts of various pitch and helix angle combinations. Test fluids were the 50%-solution of the ethylene glycol and the Hue water. Heat transfer coefficient and friction factors were deduced from the measured values of temperatures, flowrates and pressure drops. A unified dimensionless correlation for the heat transfer coefficients was developed as a function of the pitch to diameter ratio, the Reynolds number and the Prandtl number. An exergy analysis was performed to evaluate an optimal operating condition with the wire-coil inserts.

  • Carbon solid was prepared from dormant mesophase pitch (DMPP) without using a binder and its properties were characterized. DMPP powder was stabilized with air or nitric acid in pretreatment stage so that it might not soften in later heat ttreatment stage. Optimum sintering properties were obtained from carbon powder with 2.36∼2.38 of C/H atomic ratio and 1.27∼1.40 of C/O atomic ration in air stabilization. In nitric acid stabilization, optimum sintering properties were obtained when 20∼40 vol.% of nitric acid solution was used. Compressive strength increased up to 1200$^{\circ}C$ of heat treatment temperature, and the highest compressive strength and bulk density of carbon solid from DMPP were 3000 kgf/㎤, respectively. The optical properties of carbon solid obtained was fine mosaic structure. Carbon solid after graphitization showed the properties of hard carbon due to stabilization and its shore hardness was 120.
