During the last two decades, lots of efforts have been devoted to resolve thermal stratification phenomenon and primary water environment issues. While several effective methods were proposed especially in related to thermally stratified flow analyses and corrosive material resistance experiments, however, lack of details on specific stress and fatigue evaluation make it difficult to quantify structural behaviors. In the present work, effects of the thermal stratification and primary water are numerically examined from a structural integrity point of view. First, a representative austenitic nuclear piping is selected and its stress components at critical locations are calculated in use of four stratified temperature inputs and eight transient conditions. Subsequently, both metal and environmental fatigue usage factors of the piping are determined by manipulating the stress components in accordance with NUREG/CR-5704 as well as ASME B&PV Codes. Key findings from the fatigue evaluation with applicability of pipe and three-dimensional solid finite elements are fully discussed and a recommendation for realistic evaluation is suggested.
The paper presents preliminary investigation results for the effect of the baseline correction in the acceleration excitation method on finite element seismic analysis results (such as accumulated equivalent plastic strain, equivalent plastic strain considering cyclic plasticity, von Mises effective stress, etc) of nuclear safety Class I components. For investigation, finite element elastic-plastic time-history seismic analysis is performed for a surge line including a pressurizer lower head, a pressurizer surge nozzle, a surge piping, and a hot leg surge nozzle using the Chaboche hardening model. Analysis is performed for various seismic loading methods such as acceleration excitation methods with and without the baseline correction, and a displacement excitation method. Comparing finite element analysis results, the effect of the baseline correction is investigated. As a result of the investigation, it is identified that finite element analysis results using the three methods do not show significant difference.
To manage the wall thinning of carbon steel piping in nuclear power plants, the utility of Korea has performed thickness inspection for some quantity of pipe components during refueling outages and determined whether repair or replacement after evaluating UT (Ultrasonic Test) data. When the existing UT data evaluation methods, such as Band, Blanket, PTP (Point to Point) Methods, are applied to a certain pipe component, unnecessary re-inspecting situations may be generated even though the component does not thinned. In those cases, economical loss caused by repeated inspection and problems of maintaining the pipe integrity followed by decreasing of newly inspected components may be generated. EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) in USA has suggested several statistical methods, TPM (Total Point Method), LSS (Least Square Slope) Method, etc. to distinguish whether multiple inspecting components have thinned or not. This paper presents the analysis results for multiple inspecting components over three times based on both NAM (Near Area of Minimum) Method developed by KEPCO-E&C and the other methods suggested by EPRI.
Process gas piping is one of the most basic components frequently used in the refinery and petrochemical plants. Many kinds of by-product gas have been used as fuel in the process plants. In some plants, natural gas is additionally introduced and mixed with the byproduct gas for upgrading the fuel. In this case, safety or design margin of the changed piping system of the plant should be re-evaluated based on a proper design code such as ASME or API codes since internal pressure, temperature and gas compositions are different from the original plant design conditions. In this study, series of piping stress analysis were conducted for a process piping used for transporting the mixed gas of the by-product gas and the natural gas from a mixing drum to a knock-out drum in a refinery plant. The analysed piping section had been actually installed in a domestic industry and needed safety audit since the design condition was changed. Pipe locations of the maximum system stress and displacement were determined, which can be candidate inspection and safety monitoring points during the upcoming operation period. For studying the effects of outside air temperature to safety the additional stress analysis were conducted for various temperatures in $0{\sim}30^{\circ}C$. Effects of the friction coefficient between the pipe and support were also investigated showing a proper choice if the friction coefficient is important. The maximum system stresses were occurred mainly at elbow, tee and support locations, which shows the thermal load contributes considerably to the system stress rather than the internal pressure or the gravity loads.
Alloy 600 widely used in nuclear power plant is susceptible to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC). It is important to prioritize the inspection of Alloy 600 components using PWSCC susceptibility index. Plant-specific model for the susceptibility index was reviewed. The normalized PWSCC susceptibility index to a reference value is suggested and applied. The result was found to be reasonable.
The lightness of components required on marine and shipbuilding industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, fatigue failure phenomena, which happen in metal, bring on danger in human life and property. Therefore, antifatigue failure technology takes an important part of current industries. In this study, it was investigated about endurance and fatigue crack propagation rate of according to stress ratio of SMAW commonly using for welding structures in present. Fatigue crack propagation rate(da/dN) of low load(R=0.1) was lower than of high load(R=0.6) for piping weld. And in stage I, ${\Delta}$Kth, the threshold stress intensity factor of the weld under heavy load is higher than under small load. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the weld of stress ratio R=0.l than in the weld of stress ratio R=0.6.
CF8M cast austenitic stainless steel is used for several components such as primary coolant piping, elbow, pump casing, and valve bodies in light water reactors. These components are subject to thermal aging at the reactor operating temperature. Thermal aging results in spinodal decomposition of the delta-ferrite leading to increased strength and decreased toughness. In this study, three kinds of the aged CF8M specimen were prepared using an artificially simulated aging method. The objective of this study is to summarize the method of estimating ferrite contents, Charpy impact energy and J-R curve, and to evaluate the thermal embrittlement of the CF8M cast austenitic stainless steel piping used in the domestic nuclear power plants.
The most components and piping of the secondary side of domestic nuclear power plants were manufactured carbon-steel and low-alloy steel. Flow accelerated corrosion leads to wall thinning (metal loss) of carbon steel components and piping exposed to the flowing water or wet steam of high temperature, pressure, and velocity. The feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced sever wall thinning damage, which increases as operating time progress. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have also experienced wall thinning damage in the shell wall around the impingement baffle. This paper describes the comparisons between the numerical analysis results using the FLUENT code and the experimental results based on down-scaled experimental facility. The experiments were performed based on several types of impingement baffle plates which are installed in low pressure feedwater heater.
Wall thinning of carbon steel pipe components due to Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) is one of the most serious threats to the integrity of steam cycle piping systems in Nuclear Power Plants (NPP). Since the mid-1990s, secondary side piping systems in Korean NPPs have experienced wall thinning, leakages and ruptures caused by FAC. Korea Electric power Research Institute (KEPRI) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., LTD. (KHNP) have conducted a study to develop the methodology for systematic pipe management and established the Korean Thinned Pipe Management Program (TPMP). To effectively maintain the integrity of piping system, FAC engineer should understand the criterions of the structural integrity evaluation and the safety margin assessment for the thinned pipe component. This paper describes the technical items of TPMP, and shows the example of the integrity evaluation and safety margin assessment for three thinned pipe component of a NPP.
For the assessment of fracture behaviors of structural components, various fracture mechanics parameters have been applied to date. New approaches to analyze structural fracture performance under elastic-plastic condition have been proposed by the development of testing methods for characterization of material behavior which is defying to the analysis by conventional fracture parameters. In this study, on the assumption that, initiation of crack propagation of a piping materials occurs when the crack tip strain field reaches "the local fracture strain", following two major issues are discussed ; 1) The relationship between the critical value of J-integral($J_{IC}$) and the local fracture strain (${\varepsilon}_c$) in uniaxial tensile test in the region of maximum reduction area was described. 2) To proved the validity of above relations a series of tests were performed under various temperature and on the different piping materials.materials.
