The purpose of this study is to investigate the cooling performance of Heat Pipe Heat Exchanger(HPHE) for an electronic telecommunication system by adequate convection condition. Heat generation rates of electronic components, the temperature distributions of HPHE and surrounding air are analyzed experimentally and numerically. In order to perform the heat transfer analysis for the thermal design of telecommunication system, a program is developed. The program is useful to a user who is not familiar with an electronic telecommunication system. The simulation results showed that the HPHE were able to achieve a cooling capacity of up to 230W at the maximum temperature difference of $17.4^{\circ}C$. To verify the results from the numerical simulation, an experiment was conducted under the same condition as the numerical simulation, and their results were compared.
The ultrasonic guided wave propagates along with the given structure's wall direction. Because of this specific character, the ultrasonic guided waves arc used in many other fields. Especially, it can be readily utilized for nondestructive inspection of various structures that are made up of gas pipes, heat exchanger tubes, and thin plates. Further, the guided wave technology can be readily utilized when inspecting pipes or thin plates which pose high risk of the accident but for which the nondestructive inspection itself is impossible because it is difficult to get to them since they are coated or buried underground. In the other hand, conventional ultrasonic testing such as thickness gauging uses bulk waves and only tests the region of structure immediately below the transducer. As a result of the application about inlet and outlet cooling water line using guided wave test, we conformed that the overall corrosions were in the lower side of the 304.8 mm inlet valve and these corrosions were engaged in not locally but through the lower side of the valve line. In the near future, we can expect that the detectable defect size is smaller than before along with the development of the sensing technology.

In order to investigate the feasibility of a direct ice slurry transporting system for the purpose of district cooling, a case study of field application is performed. The research aims include the field measurement of ice packing factor, the performance of coldness delivery, and the branching characteristics of ice slurry. Two representative types of pipe branch are dealt with in this work. For the slurry flow with ice volume fraction of 0.16 or less, the pipe blocking due to aggregation is not observed. Based on the time-wise variation of temperature in the storage tank, a calculating method of ice packing factor is newly developed, which seems to be useful when the brine concentration is unknown. It is confirmed that the mass flow rate of ice slurry per unit cooling load is markedly reduced with increasing the ice content. The pumping power also decreases, but remains unchanged for high ice fractions. The distribution of ice particle before and after branching shows a good uniformity within the range of 5% difference, but yields a unique trend depending on the flow rate.

An efficient cooling system is essential for the electronic packaging such as a high-luminance LED lighting. A special heat transport technology, Pulsating Heat Pipe (PHP), can be applied to the cooling of LED lighting. In this paper, the operational characteristics of the PHP in the imposed thermal boundary conditions of LED lighting were experimentally investigated. The experimental PHP was made of copper tubes of internal diameter of 2.1 mm. The working fluids of ethanol, FC-72, water, acetone and R-123 were chosen for comparison. The results showed that an optimum range of charging ratio exists for high cooling performance; 50% for most of the fluids. Among the five working fluids, water showed the highest heat transfer rate of 260 W. Two distinguished characteristics of pulsating direction were identified. It is also identified that high vapor pressure gradient is one of key parameters for better heat transfer performance.

Experimental study was performed for free convection and ice formation around two horizontal circular tubes which were placed vertically. Temperature and velocity distributions were visualized with real time holographic interferometry technique and tracer method. When water was cooled, super cooled region was formed around cooling pipe. It was found that flow induced by free convection always directed downwards when the coolant temperature was low, while it directed upwards when the coolant temperature was comparably high though it directed downwards initially. Flow phenomena with free convection were investigated in detail with varying cooling rate and length between cooling pipes. And growing process of dense ice was also investigated. Dendritic ice is suddenly formed within a supercooled region, and a dense ice layer begins to develop from the cooling wall.

Supercooled type ice storage system with aqueous solution (or water) may have trouble with non-uniform release of supercooling even though it contributes to the simplicity of system and ecological improvement. The non-uniform release increases the instability of the system because it may cause an ice blockage in pipe or cooling part. In order to suppress the release of the supercooling, a cooling experiment was tried to an ethylene glycol(EG) 3 mass% solution corresponding with pressurization. Also, the frequency ratio of the release of the supercooling was measured to the pressurization from 101 to 505 kPa. At results, the frequency ratio of supercooling release tends to decrease as the pressure of the aqueous solution increased in each cooling rate. Moreover, it tends to decrease as the cooling rate of the solution decreased in each pressure.

The purpose of the present study is to examine the heat transport limitations in a screen mesh heat pipe for electronic cooling by theoretical analysis. Diameter of pipe was 6mm, and mesh numbers were 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250, and water was investigated as working fluid. According to the change of mesh number, wick layer, inclination and saturation temperature, the maximum heat transport limitations by capillary, entraintment, sonic and boiling were analyzed by a theoretical design method of heat pipe, including capillary pressure, pumping pressure, liquid friction coefficient in wick, vapor friction coefficient, etc. Based on the results, the capillary limitation in a small diameter of heat pipe is largely affected by mesh number and wick layer. Mesh number of 250 is desirable not to be used in pipe diameter of 6 mm, because capillary heat transport limitation decreases by the abrupt increase of liquid friction pressure due to the small liquid flow area. For the heat transport of 15 watt in 6mm diameter pipe, mesh number of 100 and one layer is an optimum wick condition, which thermal resistance is the smallest.
In the nuclear power plant, emergency core coolant system(ECCS) is furnished at reactor coolant system(RCS) in order to cool down high temperature water in case of emergency. However, in this coolant system, it occurs thermal stratification phenomena in case that there is the mixing of cooling water and high temperature water due to valve leakage in ECCS. This thermal stratification phenomena raises excessive thermal stresses at pipe wall. Therefore, this phenomena causes the accident that reactor coolant flows in reactor containment in the nuclear power plant due to the deformation of pipe and thermal fatigue crack(TFC) at the pipe wall around the place that it exists. Hence, in order to fundamental identification of this phenomena, it requires the experimental research of modeling test in the pipe flow that occurs thermal stratification phenomena. So, this paper models RCS and ECCS pipe arrangement and analyzes the mechanism of thermal stratification phenomena by measuring of temperature in variance with leakage flow rate in ECCS modeled pipe and Reynold number in RCS modeled pipe. Besides, results of this experiment is compared with computational analysis which is done in advance.

This paper proposes an optimum pipe material (PVC vs. PE) design & selection for open loop ground heat exchangers. Heat exchange efficiency and/or workability, and the need for trench insulation were investigated by comparing EWT (cooling mode) of each system. CFD simulations for the PVC and PE pipe with the same inner diameter show similar EWT. This is because the PVC pipe has a small thickness but a low thermal conductivity as compared to the PE pipe, and thus these two properties tend to offset each other. However, a hypothetically insulated pipe led to a meaningful drop of EWT. This means pipe insulation is of importance in performance of ground heat exchangers. From analyzing climate data and system operation, it is not advantageous to insulate trench pipes due to construction difficulties and ground temperature characteristics that are seasonally varied.
