  • This study was aimed at evaluation of residual stress of steel pipe structures. The production process of pipes was complex (at first bending was done by roll forming or press forming and welding was final process of making of steel pipes). So there could be effected high residual stresses in steel pipes. In order to evaluate the changes of residual stress the locations of measurement were selected carefully. Measurements of residual stress were done for various kinds of pipes (shapes in circular and square). For the evaluation of residual stress, hole-drilling method (ASTM E837 was applied. The results showed that along the weld Eine high tensile stress were measured as effected, and high tensile stresses were measured where large plastic deformation developed. Through these efforts, experimental results could be more effectively assisted by numerical method.

  • This paper presents a numerical method to simulate ductile tearing in cracked components under high strain rates using finite element damage analysis. The strain rate dependence on tensile properties and multiaxial fracture strain is characterized by the model developed by Johnson and Cook. The damage model is then defined based on the ductility exhaustion concept using the strain rate dependent multiaxial fracture strain concept. The proposed model is applied to simulate previously published three cracked pipe bending test results under two different test speed conditions. Simulated results show overall good agreement with experimental results.

  • The industrial application of hydroforming has a great potential in saying cost and achieving dimensional accuracy in automotive industry presently. The aim of the following article is to investigate the effect of process parameters on hydroformed part. Firstly, we have to investigate the change of mechanical properties for sheet and pipe material according to various radius/thickness ratio(r/t). The change of mechanical properties affects the yield stress more than the total elongation. Increase of yield stress for pipe has a bad influence on formability of hydroforming. Among the roll-forming process, the sizing process didn't change mechanical properties. The process parameters such as the initial pressure, mandrel shape and friction have seriously influenced on formability of hydroforming. Therefore we need to check formability of given material through the FE analysis in the beginning stage of process design and the predicted hydroforming process parameters ate generally a good starting point for the prototype tryout stage. The results of pretending, hydroforming analysis using FE model are good agreement with experimental results.

  • This paper presents vibration testing, control, and finite element analysis of a piping system, which is subjected to the changes in fluid levels. Nuclear power plants typically employ a cooling system that uses sea water. These systems are subjected to dynamic characteristic changes caused by sea-level variations, which introduces failures of cooling system components. Therefore in this study, analytical and experimental studies were performed to understand the effect of sea-level changes on the dynamic characteristics of piping systems. It was shown that, as the sea-level increases, pipe's natural frequencies decreases in relation to its mode shape. A 1/14 scale model was also built to compare the results obtained by the analytical study. A good agreement between experiment and analytical studies were observed. Finally, an on-line resonant frequency identification system was proposed and developed, which utilizes piezoelectric transducers as sensors and actuators, in order to avoid catastrophic failure of piping systems.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical analysis results regarding the effects of an incomplete penetration defect on the fatigue lives of socket welded pipes. For the experiment, four-point bending fatigue tests with various defect geometries (defect depth and circumferential length) were performed, and test results are presented in terms of stress-life data. The results showed that for circumferentially short defects, the fatigue life tends to increase with increasing crack depth, but for longer defects, the trend becomes the opposite. Finite element analysis showed that for short defects, the maximum principal stress decreases with increases in crack depth. For a longer defect, the opposite trend was found. Furthermore, the maximum principal stress tends to increase with an increase in defect length regardless of the defect depth.

  • In this study, we introduced the spiral pipe nailing system (refer as SPN system) with self drilling method, can apply to ground which is hard to keep shape of bore hole, and performed limit equilibrium analysis with simplilied trial wedge method while length ratio and bond ratio were altered to evaluate slope stability considered of tensile strength and bending stiffness. A newly soil nailing system named as the SPN system is respected to reduce displacement of nail and increase global slope stability. And effects of various factors related to the design of the SPN system, such as the type of drilling method and the bit, are examined throughout a series of the displacement-controlled field pull-out tests. 6 displacement-controlled field pull-out tests are performed in the present study and the volume of grouting arc also evaluated based on the measurements. In addition, short-term characteristics of pull-out deformations of the newly proposed SPN system are analyzed and compared with those of the general soil nailing system by carrying out the displacement-controlled field pull-out tests.

  • This study deals with a basic proposal to prove the safety for the exhausted fittings of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. First, this study was approached to numerical analysis solving to close the exact boundary condition (Axial, Bending, Lateral) and the second, this study produced the Lateral movement equipment for the vibration. For the numerical analysis, This study was considered with the exact solution of Lateral movement and the resonance effect for durability sample according to fitting positions. The second, This study was made for special equipment for displacement/gas leak and the frequency because the domestic samples were comparing with foreign fitting and foreign fitting for the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. The result of this study was satisfied with domestic fittings for the basic reference but it need more test because of other situation for hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the performance improvement of waste heat recovery from a boiler, by the Cured-In-Place-Pipe(CIPP) process. The conventional apparatus does not utilize the waste heat from the boiler during the process. However, the present apparatus recovers the waste heat from the boiler. When the new apparatus is used, the bending strength and modulus of the CIPP becomes double, and is over 45% stronger, than the required conditions, respectively. It is found that the energy consumption reduces to 50%, by recovering the waste heat from the boiler, and the oil consumption amount reduces to 1/3, compared to the conventional apparatus.

  • The current paper presents a technique to detect crack in non-uniform cantilever-type pipe beams, that have step changes in the properties of their cross sections, restrained by a translational and rotational spring with a tip mass at the free end. An equation for estimating the natural frequencies for the non-uniform beams is derived using the boundary and continuity conditions, and an equivalent bending stiffness for cracked beam is applied to calculate the natural frequencies of the cracked beam. An experimental study for a step-changed non-uniform cantilever-type pipe beam restrained by bolts with a tip mass is carried out to verify the proposed method. The translational and rotational spring constants are updated using the neural network technique to the results of the experiment for intact case in order to establish a baseline model for the subsequent crack detection. Then, several numerical simulations for the specimen are carried out using the derived equation for estimating the natural frequencies of the cracked beam to construct a set of training patterns of a neural network. The crack locations and sizes are identified using the trained neural network for the 5 damage cases. It is found that the crack locations and sizes are reasonably well estimated from a practical point of view. And it is considered that the usefulness of the proposed method for structural health monitoring of the step-changed non-uniform cantilever-type pipe beam-like structures elastically restrained in the ground and have a tip mass at the free end could be verified.

  • Making use of SN steel in the building structure should be a prerequisite to adopt the design strength of said steel. As a preceding study, the material properties of STKN400B/490B tubes and SPAP235/325 and SPAR295 square pipes manufactured using SN400B/490B plates were evaluated. Compared with the yield and ultimate strengths of SN400B/490B plates, those of STKN400B/490B tubes increase. Nonetheless, the yield and ultimate strengths of STKN400B/490B tubes satisfied the design codes of STKN400B/490B tubes even though the tubes were fabricated via roll bending or press forming. On the other hand, the yield and ultimate strengths at the edges of SPAP235/325 square pipes did not satisfy the design codes based on the values at the sides. The maximum tensile and compressive residual stresses at the SN490B tube were equal to and 40% of the yield strength of the SN490B plate, respectively, In the case of the SPAP325 square pipe, both the maximum tensile and compressive residual stresses were 80% of the yield strength of the SN490B plate. The axial compressive loaded column test results snowed that the buckling strengths were not very different regardless of the mode of fabrication of STKN490B tunes. i.e., through roll bending or press forming. On the other hand, the buckling strength of the SPAP325 square pipe was higher than that of the built-up square pipe.
