  • Thermoforming of fiber reinforced thermoplastic (FRTP) braided tubes was studied as a new forming technique. FRTP braided tubes with four plies are fabricated by the pressure bonding method are used in thermoforming. Bulge forming, bending process, pipe fittings and FE analysis are carried out in this study. In bulge forming the composite tube can be expanded up to about two times initial diameter. The suggested bending process can be obtained bent products with various bending radii. In pipe fitting it is possible to fabricate T-shape fitting, cross fitting and two-branch fitting. These results exhibit developed forming processes become useful processes for textile composite tubes.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. In pipes of energy plants, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe erosion-corrosion (E/C) damage. However, the effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. In this paper, the monotonic bending tests were performed of full-scale welded and unwelded carbon steel pipes with local wall thinning. A monotonic bending load was applied to straight pipe specimens by four-point loading at ambient temperature without internal pressure. The observed failure modes were divided into four types; ovalization, crack initiation/growth after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation/growth after local buckling. Also, the strengths of welded and unwelded piping system with local wall thinning were evaluated.

  • A crack identification method using an equivalent bending stiffness and natural frequency for cracked beam is presented. Modal properties of cantilever beam with a tip mass is identified by applying the boundary conditions to a general solution. An equivalent bending stiffness for cracked beam based on an energy method is used to identify natural frequencies of cantilever thin-walled pipe with a tip mass, which has a through-the-thickness crack, subjected to bending. The identified natural frequencies of the cracked beam are used in constructing training patterns of neural networks. Then crack location and size are identified using a committee of the neural networks. Crack detection was carried out for an example beam using the proposed method, and the identified crack locations and sizes agree reasonably well with the exact values.

  • This paper presents plastic limit loads of piping branch junctions with local wall thinning under combined pressure and in-plane bending, based on systematic three-dimensional finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials. An ideal branch junction without weld or reinforcement around the intersection is considered with two locations of wall thinning; one in the run pipe, and the other in the branch pipe. Based on FE results, effects of thinning geometries on plastic limit moments are quantified and simple approximations of plastic limit loads are proposed.

  • Based on three-dimensional(3-D) finite element limit analyses, this paper provides limit and TES (Twice-Plastic Load) loads for mitred pipe bends under bending and pressure. The plastic limit loads are determined from FE limit analyses based on elastic-perfectly-plastic materials using the small and large geometry change option. A wide range of parameters related to the mitred bend geometry is considered. Based on the finite element results, closed-form approximations of plastic limit and TES plastic load solutions for mitred pipe bends under bending are proposed.

  • Most of aged water supply pipes have been replaced by the open cut method. However, this method has some limitations because water pipes, in many cases, are buried together with other underground facilities or are buried in the middle of high-traffic roads or in narrow alleyways where boring machines cannot be used. This research developed a pipe bursting device for small diameter pipes that enables pipe replacement without excavating the ground, by the busting of existing buried pipes followed by the traction and insertion of new pipes. As a results of examining the field applicability of the developed device, PE pipes and PVC pipes required the tractive force of 413.65~665.69 kgf and 457.43~791.35 kgf respectively, plus an additional 30 % tractive force per elbow. The proper number of bursting head was demonstrated that the connection of more than 2 heads could secure a stable bending radius of 15D. The developed device can be improved through field experiments involving various pipe types and pipe diameters, as well as presence/absence of elbow, so as to be utilized regardless of diverse variables according to the conditions of the soils surrounding existing pipes.

  • The dynamic instability and natural frequency of elastically restrained pipe conveying fluid with the attached mass and crack are investigated. The pipe system with a crack is modeled by using extended Hamilton's Principle with consideration of bending energy. The crack on the pipe system is represented by a local flexibility matrix and two undamaged beam segments are connected. In this paper, the influence of attached mass, its position and crack on the dynamic stability of a elastically restrained pipe system is presented. Also, the critical flow velocity for the flutter and divergence due to the variation in the position and stiffness of supported spring is studied. Finally, the critical flow velocities and stability maps of the pipe conveying fluid with the attached mass are obtained by the changing parameters.

  • Fracture resistance curves for concerned materials are required in order to perform elastic-plastic fracture mechanical analyses. Fracture resistance curve is built with J-integral values and crack extension values. The objective of this paper is to apply the load ratio method to the measurement of the crack length for the real scale pipe specimen. For these, the fracture test using the real scale pipe specimen and finite element analyses were performed. A 4-point bending jig was manufactured for the pipe test and the direct current potential drop method and the load ratio method was used to measure the crack extension and the length for the real scale pipe test. Finite element analyses about the compliance of the pipe specimen were executed for applying the load ratio method according to the crack length.

  • The offshore subsea platforms are connected to subsea pipelines to transport gas/oil from wells. The pipe is a multilayered structure of polymer and steel for compensating both flexibility and strength. The pipe also requires reinforcement structures to endure the extreme environmental conditions. A vertebrae structure of bend restrictors is one of the reinforcement structures installed to protect the subsea pipe from excessive bending deformations. In this study, structural behaviors of the subsea pipeline with bend restrictors are investigated by the multi-body contact analysis in Abaqus 6.14-2. Contact forces of each bend restrictor extracted from the multi-body contact analysis can be boundary conditions for topology design optimization in Altair Hyperworks 13.0 Hypermesh-Optistruct. Multiple design constraints are considered to obtain a manufacturable design with efficient material usage. Through the multi-body contact analysis with optimized bend restrictors, it is confirmed that the bending performance of the optimized design is enhanced.
