  • An investigation was done to know the warty layer structural difference in bordered pit of longitudinal tracheid in Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc., Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc., Pinus rigida Mill. and Larix kaempferi Carr. grown in Korea. Among the four wood species, warty layer was found in bordered pit of longitudinal tracheid of Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. and Pinus rigida Mill. The mean height and horizontal diameter of warty layer was found highest in Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. The height of warty layer was found the highest in juvenile wood of Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. and it gradually decreased towards the matured wood.

  • A model was designed to identify wood species between Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki and Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. using the near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in combination with principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). In the PCA using all of the spectra, Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki and Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. could not be classified. In the PCA using the spectrum that has been measured in sapwood, however, Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki and Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. could be identified. In particular, it was clearly classified by sapwood in radial section. And more, these two species could be perfectly identified using PLS-DA prediction model. The best performance in species identification was obtained when the second derivative spectra was used; the prediction accuracy was 100%. For prediction model, the $R_p{^2}$ value was 0.86 and the RMSEP was 0.38 in second derivative spectra. It was verified that the model designed by NIR spectroscopy with PLS-DA is suitable for species identification between Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki and Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.

  • Wood cell-wall modification with acetic anhydride, lumen filled with styren monomer and methyl methacrylate, and a combination of these two treatments were studied for their effectiveness for dimensional stability. Compared to those of untreated Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc and sole acetylated red pine, The combination of acetylation and impregnation with methy methacrylate greatly reduced water absorption, increased ASE to the best and gave better bending strength and compression strength.

  • This experiment was carried out for the improvement of drying schedules for 50 mm-thick Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) lumber. Drying rates were analyzed comparatively after drying to 15% of final moisture content through the applications of conventional kiln drying schedule, time schedule, continuously rising temperature schedule, and drying rate schedule. As results drying rate of 50 mm-thick red pine lumber was 0.53%/hr with conventional kiln drying schedule, 0.9%/hr with time schedule, 2.29%/hr with continuously rising temperature schedule, and 1.52%/hr with drying rate schedule, respectively.

  • To develope food preservative, antimicrobial activities of Pinus densiflora (PD) ethanol extract against Listeria monocytogenes Scott A. Listeria monocytogenes Brie I and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19111 were investigated. The ethanol extracts of PD showed strong antimicrobial activities on Listeria monocytogenes. The crude ethanol extracts of PD were further fractionated by ether, ethyl acetate and butanol. The ether fraction from ethanol extract showed the strongest antimicrobial effects on Listeria monocytogenes in tryptic soy broth containing 40 mg/mL ether fractions compared with other fractions. The effect of ethanol extract of pinus densiflora against Listeria monocytogenes culture for growth stage in tryptic soy broth at 35$^{\circ}C$ showed the strongest antimicrobial activites for lag phase. The morphological changes of the cells were observed with transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the cells were injured by treatment of 40 mg/mL ethanol extract of Pinus densiflora.

  • To develop natural food preservative, antimicrobial activity of Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. (PD) ethanol extract against pathogens were investigated. The growth of pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29737, Bacillus subtils KCTC 1021, Bacillus megaterium KCTC 3007 and Vibrio parahaemolyticus ATCC 17802 was inhibited as much as 4 to 6 log cycle in tryptic soy broth containing 40mg/㎖ of PD extract but Salmonalla typhimurium ATCC 14028 and Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 21541 were not inhibited. The total, gram negative and psychrotrophic bacterial count were inhibited in minced pork containing 40mg/㎖ of PD extract for 20 days at 4$\^{C}$. The sensory quality of hamburger patty such as taste, flavor and overall acceptability were not decreased by the addition of 40mg/㎖ PD(p<0.05).

  • Flexural properties were investigated on clear specimens made from small diameter thinned trees of pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.), Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc), Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Carr.), and sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima Carr.). MOR and MOE values of small clear specimen were depended on the species. The highest density of sawtooth oak shows the highest values of MOR and MOE. However, the lowest density of Japanese larch shows the lowest values of MOR. It was also shown that flexural properties could be predicted by stress wave MOE, since the correlations between stress wave MOE and flexural properties were relatively good.

  • To extend the understanding of the pyrolysis mechanism of wood, we have investigated wood dust charcoal and condensate of volatile organic compounds (VOC) obtained during the pyrolysis of red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) at $180{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ using elemental analysis, IR and GC/Mass. The effect of activation process on the charcoal structure also has been studied by comparing elemental analysis and IR data of charcoal carbonated at $600^{\circ}C$ and charcoals activated at $750^{\circ}C$. The results show that pyrolysis of wood has mainly started near at $240^{\circ}C$ and its chemical components did not changed much up to $270^{\circ}C$. However, the element contents and IR spectra drastically changed at $300^{\circ}C$. The fact that IR peaks related to the aromatic ring of lignin are observed in the charcoal pyrolized at $450^{\circ}C$ indicates that a small part of lignin still remains at this temperature. The chemical structure of the activated charcoal seems almost unaffected by the activation time.

  • We examined the in vitro rooting and survival of tissue cultured plantlets of Quercus acutissima Carr. and Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. after addition of Pisolithus tinctorius(Pt) ectomycorrhizal fungus inoculum to the medium and effects of three levels of sucrose and phosphorus in culture media. Shoots of Quercus acutissima were obtained from winter buds of a 30-year old tree and cuttings of Pinus densiflora from germinated seed, and they were inoculated with Pt in vitro. In both species, Pt enhanced shoot length, survival, number of adventitious roots, root length, and rooting percentage. Survival in Quercus acutissima was increased from 75% in control to 100% in Pt inoculation. Pt inoculation increased the percentage of rooting from 20% to 70% in Quercus acutissima cuttings and from 63% to 100% in Pinus densiflora cuttings. It is concluded that mycorrhizal inoculation to tissue cultured Quercus acutissima Carr. and to in vitro cutting of Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. has practical application to improvement of poor root development and initial period of reduced shoot growth in vitro.
