  • Purpose: To evaluate and compare the results of children with displaced supracondylar fractures of humerus treated with open reduction and pinning with closed reduction and pinning. Materials and Methods: From March 2002, we treated 17 patients with completely displaced supracondylar fractures under the age of 7 with a minimal follow up period of 6 months. 9 patients were treated with closed reduction and pinning and 8 patients were treated with open reduction and pinning. The clinical results were evaluated with Flynn's criteria. Time to bone union was also analyzed for these two set of patients. Results: The group treated with open reduction had 6 excellent and 2 good results for change in carrying angles, 5 excellent, 2 good and 1 fair results for motion loss evaluated by Flynn's criteria. The average time to bony union for this group was 5.8 weeks. The group treated with closed reduction had 6 excellent, 2 good, and 1 fair results for change in carrying angles and 7 excellent, 1 good and 1 fair results for motion loss. The average time to bony uinon for this group was 3.7 weeks. Conclusion: In treating completely displaced supracondylar fractures of humerus in children, the closed reduction method and open reduction method all showed good results. But the operation time, duration of hospital stay and time to union was somewhat shorter for the patients treated with closed redution and pinning.

  • This paper reports extensive experimental study done to compare workability and bond strength of five different types of polymer-based bonding agents for reinforcing bars in pinning retrofit. In pinning retrofit, steel pins of 6 to 10 mm diameters are inserted into holes drilled diagonally from mortar joints. This technique is superior to other techniques especially in retrofitting historic masonry constructions because it does not change the appearance of constructions. With an ordinary cement paste as bonding agent, it is very difficult to insert reinforcing bars at larger open times due to poor workability and very thin clearance available. Here, open time represents the time interval between the injection of bonding agent and the insertion of reinforcing bars. Use of polymer-cement paste (PCP), as bonding agent, is proposed in this study, with investigation on workability and bond strengths of various PCPs in brick masonry, at open times up to 10 minutes, which is unavoidable in practice. Corresponding nonlinear finite element models are developed to simulate the experimental observations. From the experimental and analytical study, the Styrene-Butadiene Rubber polymer-cement paste (SBR-PCP) with prior pretreatments of drilled holes showed strong bond with minimum strength variation at larger open times.

  • Recently, organic thin-film transistors have been widely researched for organic light-emitting diode panels, memory devices, logic circuits for flexible display because of its virtue of mechanical flexibility, low fabrication cost, low process temperature, and large area production. In order to achieve high performance OTFTs, increase in accumulation carrier mobility is a critical factor. Post-fabrication thermal annealing process has been known as one of the methods to achieve this by improving the crystal quality of organic semiconductor materials In this paper, we researched the properties of pentacene films with X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) analyses as different annealing temperature in N2 ambient. Electrical characterization of the pentacene based thin film transistor was also conducted by transfer length method (TLM) with different annealing temperature in Al- and Ti-pentacene junctions to confirm the Fermi level pinning phenomenon. For Al- and Ti-pentacene junctions, is was found that as the surface quality of the pentacene films changed as annealing temperature increased, the hole-barrier height (h-BH) that were controlled by Fermi level pinning were effectively reduced.

  • We have fabricated pure YBCO films and $BaZrO_3$ doped ones on $CeO_2$ buffered YSZ single crystal substrates using rf-sputtering method. In this work, pure YBCO and 2 vol% BZO doped YBCO target were used to investigate the flux pinning properties of BZO doped YBCO films compared to undoped ones. BZO nanodots within the superconducting materials was known to comprise the self-assembled columnar defects along the c-axis from the bottom of YBCO films up to the top surface, thus can be a very strong pinning sites in the applied magnetic field parallel to them. We will discuss the possibility of growing self-assembled columnar defects in the rf-sputtering method. It is speculated that BZO and YBCO phases can separate and BZO form nanodots surrounded by YBCO epitaxial layers and continuous phase separation and ordering between these two materials, which was well studied in Pulsed Laser Deposition method. For this purpose, some severe experimental conditions such as on-axis sputtering, shorter target-substrate distance, high rf-power, etc was adopted and their results will be presented.

  • For many large-scale applications of high-temperature superconducting materials, large critical current density($J_c$) in high applied magnetic fields are required. A number of methods have been reported to introduce artificial pinning centers(APCs) in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$(YBCO) films for enhancement of their $J_c$. We report measurements of critical current in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ films deposited by PLD on $SrTiO_3$ substrates decorated with Au nanoparticles. Au nanoparticles were synthesized on STO substrates with self assembled monolayer. Microstructural analysis of the obtained YBCO films was performed by using cross-section transmission electron microscopy(TEM). Phase and textural analysis was done using X-ray diffraction. The surface morphology and surface roughness(Ra) of the layers was measured by atomic force microscopy(AFM).

  • Technical investigation to figure out the problems arising during in-situ heating electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis inside scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out. EBSD patterns were successfully acquired up to $830^{\circ}C$ without degradation of EBSD pattern quality in steels. Several technical problems such as image drift and surface microstructure pinning were taking place during in-situ experiments. Image drift problem was successfully prevented in constant current supplying mode. It was revealed that the surface pinning problem was resulted from the $TiO_2$ oxide particle formation during heating inside SEM chamber. Surface pinning phenomenon was fairly reduced by additional platinum and carbon multi-layer coating before in-situ heating experiment, furthermore was perfectly prevented by improvement of vacuum level of SEM chamber via leakage control. Plane view in-situ observation provides better understanding on the overall feature of recrystallization phenomena and cross sectional in-situ observation provides clearer understanding on the recrystallization mechanism.
