  • PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1) is a serine/threonine kinase that phosphorylates several substrates and exerts neuroprotective effects against stress-induced apoptotic cell death. Mutations in PINK1 have been linked to autosomal recessive forms of Parkinson's disease (PD). Mitophagy is a type of autophagy that selectively promotes mitochondrial turnover and prevents the accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria to maintain cellular homeostasis. Toll-interacting protein (Tollip) was initially identified as a negative regulator of IL-1β receptor signaling, suppressing inflammatory TLR signaling cascades. Recently, Tollip has been reported to play a role in autophagy and is implicated in neurodegeneration. In this study, we determined whether Tollip was functionally linked to PINK1-mediated mitophagy. Our results demonstrated that Tollip promoted the mitochondrial processing of PINK1 and altered the localization of PINK1, predominantly to the cytosol. This action was attributed to increased binding of PINK1 to mitochondrial processing peptidase β (MPPβ) and the subsequent increase in MPPβ-mediated mitochondrial PINK1 cleavage. Furthermore, Tollip suppressed mitophagy following carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone-induced mitochondrial dysfunction. These findings suggest that Tollip inhibits mitophagy via the PINK1/parkin pathway upon mitochondrial damage, leading to the blockade of PINK1-mediated neuroprotection.

  • 'Dream Pink', a cultivar of Gypsophila paniculata was newly developed for cut flowers by Jeollabuk-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services. It has morphological characteristics of the intermediate plant type, double florets with many petal and two pistils, emarginate petal tip and campanulate calyx shape. Also 'Dream Pink' had several other traits such as strong flower stalk, deep pink flower color, resistance to powdery mildew and pest injury. Furthermore, 'Dream Pink' produced higher number of nodes, primary branches, longer flower stalk length with long intermodal length. In subalpine area, 'Dream Pink' cultivar showed narrow branching angle as compare to 'My Pink', during the summer cultivation. Blooming in 'Dream Pink' was delayed by 5 days, its florets were broader with more number of petals as compare to 'My Pink'.

  • Parkinson's disease is characterized by motor disturbances and dopaminergic neurodegeneration. parkin and PINK1, two most critical Parkinson's disease-associated genes, have been intensively studied to address the underlying molecular pathogenesis of the disease, but our understanding still remains unclear. Through generation and characterization of Drosophila mutants for PINK1, we show that PINK1 is required for mitochondrial integrity and function in both indirect flight muscles and dopaminergic neurons. Surprisingly, we find that PINK1 mutants share striking phenotypic similarities with parkin mutants. Indeed, transgenic expression of parkin dramatically ameliorates all PINK1 loss-of-function phenotypes, but not vice versa, implicating that Parkin acts downstream of PINK1 in maintaining mitochondrial integrity and function in both muscles and dopaminergic neurons. With the establishment of the PINK1-Parkin pathway, we are trying to further investigate the detailed molecular relationship between PINK1 and Parkin using both mammalian dopaminergic neuronal cells for biochemical analysis and Drosophila model animal for genetic analysis. We believe that elucidating the molecular function of Parkinson's disease-associated genes will be of big help for the ultimate understanding of the pathogenic mechanism of this disease and also for the development of effective drugs for Parkinson's disease.

  • This study examines the color characteristics of the usage of the color pink in menswear by analyzing its usage status and method. It involves an empirical research method establishing the frame of the study through a document study centered on trend, gender neutral considerations, and the utilization of the color pink in men's fashion, by analyzing the characteristics of color and tone by extracting the pink color shown in menswear collections as well as analyzing and categorizing the fashion image and genderless characteristics. Analyzing the color and tone of the pink color shown indicate that bright, light and pale tones had higher proportions. Pink color can also be said to be utilized as a design element that gives off a younger and more vital color image in menswear. Further, the use of brighter and softer pink colors can be interpreted as reflecting modern society's demands of masculinity to change into a more sophisticated and soft image. To analyze the characteristics of the color pink utilized in gender neutral fashion, fashion images were presented as the analysis standard. An image grouping technique was used to classify pink while utilizing genderless types-fashion style. The result showed that even with the same pink color, the fashion image can vary with different methods of expression in terms of clothes and styling. The results of this study can serve as basic data for planning fashion design concepts as it analyzed pink-using fashion images and the genderless concept type.

  • The biological treatment of TNT-containing wastewater, known commonly as pink water, was investigated using a stirred tank reactor with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia OK-5 bacterial culture. S. maltophilia OK-5 exhibited effective degradation of TNT contained in pink water, completely degrading TNT (100 mg/L) within 6 days of incubation. The dark-red brown color derived from Hydride-Meisenheimer complex became more pronounced during the incubation period, which was determined quantitatively. High-pressure liquid chromatography was used to measure residual TNT, which also resolved the metabolic intermediates (i.e., 2,4-dinitrotoluene, 2,6-dinitrotoluene and 2,4-dinitro-6-hydroxytoluene). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to verify these intermediates. Quantification of the nitroreductase (pnrB) gene isolated from S. maltophilia OK-5 growing in pink water was performed with real-time PCR. The amount of pnrB gene copies increased to $10^3$-fold after 5 days of incubation time.

  • This study sorted scores of individual characteristics and multiple intelligence by sex, handle, blood type and age through previous questionnaire with 462 adult males and females. Then electrode was attached to prefrontal lobes Fp1 and Fp2 with EEG measuring system and changes of concentration between no stimulation state and pure pink noise stimulation and their relations to multiple intelligence were examined. As a result of analysis of covariance, the mean concentration of all subjects was significantly higher in the pink noise stimulation compared to no stimulation. According to individual characteristics, concentration was significantly higher in left-hander, type A blood, and group in their thirties except for gender. Concentration in pink noise state strengthened the relation to spatial intelligence and made negative correlations with musical intelligence compared to no stimulation state. These results suggested that individual characteristics should be reflected on using pink noise for improving concentration.

  • This research examines using Rice Husk Ash, $Cr_2O_3$ in producing the pink-red color. It studies the formation of cassiterite and malayaite crystallites, the primary factors in producing the pink-red color, in relation to the application of $Cr_2O_3$ to examine its coloring mechanism. In addition, the research intends to identify the optimum synthesizing temperature and maintaining time for crystallization of malayaite, a stable pink-red colorization factor in high temperature glaze during $Cr_2O_3$-$SnO_2$-CaO-$SiO_2$ family pigment synthesis. The optimum substituting contents is Rice Husk Ash : Quartz = 1 : 2, and the optimum temperature is suggested at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 h based on analysis results by XRD, FT-IR, Raman microscope, SEM and UV-vis.
