  • Securing excellent pilots is not only directly linked to the military's improved combat capabilities, but also a way to minimize human and property losses from aircraft accidents. Therefore, a scientific method is needed to diagnose pilot aptitude from the pilot selection process and select those with high accident potential, those who are dropped out of the flight training process, and those who are not suitable for pilot life in advance. Developed countries have implemented pilot aptitude tests to solve these problems early on, but so far, the Korean Army has not introduced a pilot aptitude test system that uses diagnostic tools in the helicopter pilot selection process. Therefore, in this study, scientific diagnostic tools are developed for selecting helicopter pilots, and through this, it is predicted that the number of people who are likely to be dropped out of the training course and who have the potential for accidents will be selected in advance and eliminated in the selection process. In this context, prior research examined the key factors involved in the pilot aptitude test. Through this, the aptitude test items were developed and aptitude tests were conducted on student pilots currently in flight training, and the results of flight training were analyzed.

  • The pilot aptitude test so far has been conducted with a dichotomous concept of cognitive factor and non-cognitive factor, so it was not easy to explain concrete factors about pilot aptitude. Therefore, an integrated approach is needed to construct pilot aptitude test including all factors that can predict pilot aptitude. In previous study, we developed questionnaire items for the Pilot Aptitude Personality Test(PAPT) which can predict the flight training achievement through personality and personal characteristics. And those items were categorized as personality, cognition, and motivation factors. The flight training grades were correlated with all the test factors of the items, and the cognitive factors were high. As a result of the regression analysis, the total score of the three factors together accounted for 16% of the flight training grades. The results of the ANOVA showed that the cognition factors and motivation factors had significant effects on the completion of the flight training. The factors of PAPT predicted not only the completion of the flight training but also the flight performance. This is because the existing paper-pencil pilot aptitude test can only discriminate the flight training completion status. This is also a result of the fact that the introductory flight training consists of various factors including not only basic cognition but also personality and motivation.

  • Recently, the need of RPA(Remotely Piloted Aircraft) pilots is increasing rapidly with many requirements in order to be a beginner RPA pilot, including basic flight training, instrument flight qualification training, and aircraft type switching training. When RPA pilot gets disqualified, there will be generated much waste of efforts and expenses of trainees those pilots who are disqualified. Therefore, the methodology of pre-verifying those pilots who are not proper as RPA pilots through various scientific methods will save time and expenses with pre-reducing the pilots who will get disqualified later on. The methodology of aptitude test of RPA pilots is laid out as a consideration of pre-study of RPA pilots work analysis, and select types of aptitude test. A suitability of aptitude test is verified. In order to diagnose the flight aptitude precisely, it requires to be developed. Flight aptitude test tools might be connected with training program which could foster piloting aptitude with pre-diagnosing RPA pilot trainee selecting process. For that reason, we made an experiment in order to verify credibility and suitability of these selected programs with developing RPA pilot aptitude test tools. And also, we analyzed relationships among characteristics, analysis of data, and variables to verify the efficiency of data from prior experiment. Through this thesis, we expect to raise efficiency of flight training by providing pre-flight aptitude test information of RPA pilots.

  • The study is intended to help to select the pilot candidates with exceptional flight aptitude ability and to investigate the relationship between the results of the scholastic aptitude test and the flight aptitude. It is intended that the research will help to draw recommendations on the relevant fields of the scholastic aptitude test that is to be used to select the high caliber candidates with exceptional flight aptitude ability, to gauge the resulting effectiveness of its application and helping to revise the university's syllabus accordingly. From the study, korean, mathematics, english grade and the flight aptitude test results have all shown to hold mutual relationship and through simple correlation analysis, it was discovered that mathematics and English are the two factors that affect the results of the flight aptitude test, with the extent of its impact graded in descending order of English, mathematics and Korean. Lastly, the logistic regression analysis have discovered that the mathematics grade has significant effect on the classification of the flight aptitude and non aptitude category groups, and English also has significant influence close to the 0.05 p-values. It is believed that should the findings of this study be considered as part of the selection process of the university applicants of the department of aeronautical science, making discovery of candidates of higher quality is expected.

  • Through the use of well-designed measures of ability and aptitude, good selection can reduce training wastage, reduce the risk of accidents and increase the operational effectiveness of the successful trainees. Many countries in the world, they take various kind of aptitude test. Especially in Sweden, not like the other countries, they attach importance to interview test. As a result, they can reduce training wastage and accidents. In case of ROKAF, they take many kind of aptitude test, but it is not directly effective to the selection system. They take the several aptitude test in civil aviation in Korea, especially they attach importance to personality test. For the validity and accuracy of the aptitude test, until training pilot become professional pilot, we need a comparison analysis for initial aptitude test through the continuous observation. For theses process, we need a department with special person and development of testing system.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop questionnaire items for the Pilot Aptitude Personality Test(PAPT) which can predict the flight training achievement through personality and personal characteristics. To do this, we investigated the personality traits required to successfully conduct flight training for 30 flight instructors as a subject. The results were as follows: motivation, concentration, concentration, situational awareness, and concentration. Based on this, preliminary 300-item questionnaire was prepared by combining the existing studies related to pilot aptitude. Survey was conducted using preliminary questionnaire for 152 student pilots as a subject. As a result of the correlation analysis between the results of the questionnaire and the flight training, 16 questions were derived. Finally, factor analysis showed that the final 14 questionnaire items were confirmed. The internal concept of an item is categorized as personality, perception, and motivation. This study suggests that the pilot aptitude should be viewed from an extended point of view by analyzing individual characteristics and pilot aptitude in relation to flight training achievement.

  • The main purpose of this paper is cost reduction in absurd pilot positive expense and human accident prevention which is caused by in the pilot selection process. We use classification models such as logistic regression, decision tree, and neural network based on aptitude test results of 505 ROK Air Force applicants in 2001~2004. First, we determine the reliability and propriety against the aptitude test system which has been improved. Based on this conference flight simulator test item was compared to the new aptitude test item in order to make additional yes or no decision from different models in terms of classification accuracy, ROC and Response Threshold side. Decision tree was selected as the most efficient for each sequential flight training result and the last flight training results predict excellent. Therefore, we propose that the standard of pilot selection be adopted by the decision tree and it presents in the aptitude test item which is new a conference flight simulator test.

  • It is important to select the personnel with ideal pilot aptitude considering dramatically advancing aircraft performance and complexity of military operations as a consequence to the highly developed science and technology. The opportunity cost lost from dropouts and human error being the first cause of aviation accidents are the realistic reasons for the significance of personnel selection based on their aptitude. This study analyses the ROKAF pilot aptitude test that was improved in 2004, using various classification models. This study discusses the significance of the selected variables along with the direction of ROKAF pilot aptitude test for its development in the future. The accuracy of the classification models was improved by taking into account differing personnel characteristics of individuals on the test.

  • Although it is the first transportation method to apply the 'Ground Effect' applied to aircraft to ships, WIG ships, which are classified as 'Ships' operating on the water under international law. The pilot aptitude test, which has the effect of preventing safety accidents in advance, has not yet been established as a legal system in S. Korea, after being certified by the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) for the first time in the world in March 2020. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to ensure that identifying the importance, recognition, correlation, etc. of the tools and items of aptitude testing, from a group of experts, can be used appropriately for future development of legal aptitude testing tools. As a method of study, the questionnaire method was used, and the analysis confirmed that the tools used on aircraft and ships could be used appropriately. In particular, Due to the characteristics of the WIG ships, it was confirmed that it is necessary to develop more specifically in the future, the operational qualifications and physical fitness items, which are the aptitude evaluation items.
