Measurement and Control of Ground Vibrations due to Precast Concrete Pile-driving by Diesel Hammer (디젤해머에 의한 콘크리트말뚝 항타시(抗打時) 발생(發生)되는 지반진동(地盤振動)의 측정(測定) 및 영향평가(影響評價))

  • This Paper measures and analyzes ground vibrations induced during precast concrete pile-driving using diesel hammer at radii varying from 9m to 30m to evaluate effects of such vibrations associated with deep foundation piling operations near the residential of commercial areas. From this study, characteristics for attenuation and frequency of the vibrations casued by pile-driving are established and the empirical equation for predicting peak velocity and acceleration levels are obtained. This equation can be used to predict the peak vibration levels and select the appropriate hammers for future projects where similar soil conditions to this test site are encountered.

  • Behaviors of instrumented steel sheet piles which are installed in sand ground by vibratory hammer were investigated. Especially, stresses acting on the pile during vibratory driving, efficiency factor which reflects differences between theoretical driving force and actually delivered acting force, justifiability of rigidity of steel sheet pile, dynamic resistance characteristics of soil and penetration characteristics of sheet pile were analysed. According to the field test results it is justifiable that steel sheet pile behaves as a rigid body during vibratory driving. And it can be seen that maximum stress acting on sheet pile section is far less than tensile strength of the material. Value of the maximum section force at sheet pile head was 72% of that estimated from theoretical equation. Magnitudes of displacement amplitudes computed from displacement-time history curve corresponding to four penetration depths were in the range of 16 $\sim$ 75% of that specified by manufacturer.

Experimental Study for Prediction of Ground Vibration Responses by the Low-vibration Pile Driving Methods (저진동 파일시공법에 따른 지반진동 응답 예측을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • This study investigated the SIP-method as a low-vibration, low-noise engineering method. The ground vibrations caused by the SIP-method were measured and analyzed in each step. From the analysis results, quantitative ground vibration values and reliable vibration estimation equations were proposed. Furthermore, the ground vibrations caused by the SIP-method were compared with the ground vibrations caused by other methods presented by existing studies. Based on the vibration estimation equation with 50 % reliability, the ground vibration values by the SIP-method at the distance of 10~150 m corresponded to 17~57 % of the ground vibration values by the equation proposed by Attewell & Famer, and 14~96 % of the ground vibration values by the equation proposed by Prof. Park in his study using a diesel drop hammer. These results showed that the ground vibration reduction effect of the SIP-method was higher those of other general engineering methods. Finally, the permissible scope of work using the SIP-method which meets the domestic vibration standards was presented.

  • This paper deals with the procedure and the results on the dynamic loading tests of two large diameter - long drilled shafts (diameter=2.0m, length=75m) which were embedded into weathered rocks through thick soft marine clays and sandy gravels. Prior to the real dynamic loading test, the numerical simulation for the test procedure was performed to check the structural stability of the main pile body using equivalent static elastic analysis and the application of the hammer system using WEAP (Wave Equation Analysis of Pile Driving). Through these preliminary analyses the dynamic loading tests on large diameter - long drilled shafts have been successfully achieved.

Analysis of Plugging Effect for Large Diameter Steel Pipe Piles Considering Driveability (CEL Method) (항타시공성을 고려한 대구경 항타강관말뚝의 폐색효과 분석(CEL해석))

  • This paper presents the analysis of plugging effect especially when the large diameter steel pipe pile was installed by considering driveability (BPM, blow per meter). The Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) technique was used to simulate the driving of open-ended piles into soil. To consider the driveability, the applied driving energy for each pile was obtained from the analysis results by using the wave equation. The parametric studies were performed for different pile diameters, penetration depths of pile, soil elastic modulus and BPM. It was found that the SPI is almost constant with increasing both the pile diameter and the required driving energy. It is also found that the plugging effect increases with increasing the pile length, resulting in the increase of lateral earth pressure. Based on this study the apparent magnitude and distribution of the lateral earth pressure is proposed for inside portion mobilizing soil plug.

  • The bearing capacity of open-ended piles is affected by the degree of soil plugging, which is quantified by the incremental filling ratio, IFR. However, most design criteria for open-ended piles do not consider the variation of pile bearing capacity with IFR. In this study, new design equations for calculating the pile base and shaft load capacities, based on IFR value of the pile, were proposed using the results of model pile tests. A full-scale pile load test was also conducted on fully instrumented open-ended pile driven into gravelly sand. The IFR for the pile was continuously measured during pile driving. In order to check the accuracy of predictions made with the proposed equations, the equations were applied to two examples, including the pile load test preformed in this study. Based on the comparisons with the pile load tests results, the proposed equations appear to produce satisfactory predictions.

  • Maximum stress in pile is developed when it is driven. If the stress is greater than allowable stress of the pile, the pile will be damaged and result in stability problem. Therefore, the stress should be estimated correctly beforehand and overstress should be prevented during pile driving. There are many methods to estimate compressive stresses in concrete piles when they are driven. Nowadays, computer analysis on wave equation offers a satisfactory results. But. under certain circumstances, application of this method is difficult. Then, estimation of the stress utilizing simple formulae might be practical. In this study, relatively reasonable formulae were selected and the stresses which were measured in situ and calculated from the formulae were compared and analysed. The results show that the calculated values from Uto and Huyuki's formula were reasonably accurate and more accurate values were acquired if the values are modified by multiplying the reduction factors according to ground and construction conditions.

  • The prediction of driving stresses in piles is necessary for optimum selection of driving hammers, better design of precast piles, enact assessment of drivabilities and complete description of piling specifications. However, the existing pile-driving formulas based on the theory of Newtonian impact have some defects and shortcomings; the numerical method by the wave equation analysis using electronic computer usually Involves various uncertainties and limitations which can yield erroneous outcomes because it employs soil constants of which the nature is unknown as essential parameters and ignores the effect of residual stresses set up in the pile .after each hammer blow; and the electronic measuring technique needs extra time and expense. The method developed herein is presented for the purpose of giving field engineers a reliable and convenient analytical procedure for the prediction of driving stresses along the full length of pile using the most effetive parameters without resort to electronic computer. This method is based on the fundamental mechanics of stress waves in elastic rods and takes into account the effect of residual stresses induced by reversed friction in piles.

A Study on the Allowable Bearing Capacity of Pile by Driving Formulas (각종 항타공식에 의한 말뚝의 허용지지력 연구)

  • The estimation of pile bearing capacity is important since the design details are determined from the result. There are numerous ways of determining the pile design load, but only few of them are chosen in the actual design. According to the recent investigation in Korea, the formulas proposed by Meyerhof based on the SPT N values are most frequently chosen in the design stage. In the study, various static and dynamic formulas have been used in predicting the allowable bearing capacity of a pile. Further, the reliability of these formulas has been verified by comparing the perdicted values with the static and dynamic load test measurements. Also in cases, these methods of pile bearing capacity determination do not take the time effect consideration, the actual allowable load as determined from pile load test indicates severe deviation from the design value. The principle results of this study are summarized as follows : A a result of estimate the reliability in criterion of the Davisson method, in was showed that Terzaghi & Peck > Chin > Meyerhof > Modified Meyerhof method was the most reliable method for the prediction of bearing capacity. Comparisons of the various pile-driving formulas showed that Modified Engineering News was the most reliable method. However, a significant error happened between dynamic bearing capacity equation was judged that uncertainty of hammer efficiency, characteristics of variable , time effect etc... was not considered. As a result of considering time effect increased skin friction capacity higher than end bearing capacity. It was found out that it would be possible to increase the skin friction capacity 1.99 times higher than a driving. As a result of considering 7 day's time effect, it was obtained that Engineering News. Modified Engineering News. Design Efficiency Improvement Method Research for High Strength Steel Pipe Pile at Gwangyang Area (광양지역 고강도 강관 항타말뚝의 설계효율 향상 방안 연구)

  • Various pile load tests were carried out at Gwangyang district for 10 different piles in order to analyze the characteristcs of steel pile using high strength steel and high driving energy. Pile drivability results showed that PHC piles needed highest total blow count even with the shortest pile length and high strength steel pipe piles showed smallest total blow count eventhough driven to a more hard ground condition with longer pile length. Pile dynamic analysis results showed that for PHC pile and general steel pipe pile the allowable pile design load was decided by the allowable material strength but for high strength steel pipe pile the design load can be decided according to the ground bearing capacity. Static load test and load transfer test results showed that the pile design efficiency could be improved over 80% allowing lesser number of piles necessary for a more economical solution. Set-up effects was analyzed and regression equation for the site ground condition was derived. Bearing capacity was checked with widely used design equation and the limitation of current design method and future technology development on this subject is dicussed in this paper.
