Micro plot study was conducted to elucidate the behavior of nitrogen derived from animal manure in soil and to obtain the fundamental information on animal waste management. Soils used in this experiment were sandy loam and loam. Soil water samplers (1m length ceramic cup tube) were installed at 90cm depth of soil to collect the percolate. Fresh and fermented pig manure were applied at the rate of 0, 50, 100 ton per ha. Maize was grown to evaluate the effect of crop on nitrogen behavior through soil profile. Concentration of nitrate nitrogen in percolate increased by application of pig manure. This trend was more obvious at the loam with fermented pig manure than sandy loam with fresh pig manure treatment. The concentration of nitrate nitrogen was lower under the maize cultivation than bare soil condition by 64.6-68.9%. Concentration of Ca, Mg and Na of soil and percolate increased as nitrate nitrogen concentration increased. The equivalent ratio of cation to nitrate nitrogen of percolate was increased by application of pig manure. This result showed that canon leaching was accompanied by nitrate nitrogen. Concentration of nitrate nitrogen of subsurface soil was increased by pig manure application.
Over 90% of the livestock excretions were treated and utilized by land application in Korea. Excessive application of the livestock manure as fertilizer has been issued as a main pollutant source in groundwater and watersheds. This study was seasonally conducted to identify the discharging characteristics with a certain artificial rainfall intensity (13 mm/hr) in terms of surface runoff, groundwater, and soil residue mass depending on the livestock manure types. A experimental field was constructed with three different sites that pig liquid fertilizer (LF), cattle manure (CM), and standard (S). The pig liquid fertilizer of 1,200 L and cattle manure of 900 kg were sprayed on each site ($50m^2$). The standard area was firmly prevented from any other contaminants. In the LF site, farmland discharging rate (FDR) was computed as 0.006 in CODcr, 0.015 in TN, and 0.029 in TP, resulted from the mass balance among total injection mass, surface runoff and groundwater. In the CM site, 29% of the nitrogen and phosphorus in each were discharged to the surface, and 64% and 58% of them were remained in the farmland. Surface runoff rate of the CM was higher than that of the LF, resulted from the solid form of the CM.
This study was conducted to solve the problem of public grievance owing to odor of a pig farm. Odor emissions from pig production systems mainly originate from liquid manure storage and solid manure fermentation. The low-cost odor abatement system (OAS) for application at liquid manure storage tank and solid manure fermentation facilities was developed in this study. The OAS adapted odor removing principles of a biofilter and biotrickling filter. The OAS is very simplified in structure. The appearance of the OAS had a form of cylindrical or cubical shape. The system performance was monitored for about one year after stabilization. A 7 seconds empty bed contact time for the OAS was adapted to achieve the odor reduction levels. The commercial type of OAS was constructed with media comprised of wood chips. Moisture content always remained above 50% wet basis. Average ammonia removal efficiency for the developed design was 89% at the liquid manure storage tank. Also, the removal efficiency at a solid manure fermentation facility was 86% on ammonia.

Odor in pig manure affects the distribution of the manure over grass and crop fields as fertilizer. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different types of microbes (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Bacillus subtilis and Rodobacter capsulata) and incubation temperatures ($20^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$) on the levels of odorous compounds in pig manure. Pig manure was incubated with 0.03% microbes (v/v) at temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$ or $35^{\circ}C$. At incubation temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, the addition of Rodobacter capsulata significantly (p<0.05) decreased the levels of indoles and volatile fatty acid (VFA). At incubation temperature of $35^{\circ}C$, the addition of any microbes of the three used in this study did not significantly (p>0.05) affect the levels of odorous compounds. When incubation temperature was increased from $20^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$, levels of odorous compounds were significantly (p<0.05) increased. Taken together, these results suggest that Rodobacter capsulata could be utilized to reduce odor from pig manure in the spring and fall when the average temperature is around $20^{\circ}C$. However, alternative odor-reducing technology is needed to be developed to apply onto pig manure during the hot summer season ($35^{\circ}C$).
Animal manure and manure compost produced from livestock farms are widely applied in crop lands. Leachate and runoff water from them are presumed to be one of the major sources of water quality deterioration in rural streams. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate water quality characteristics and loading of leachate obtained under rainfall simulation. Manure composts for the experiments were collected from beef cattle farms, dairy farms, and pig farms. Water quality parameters include SS, COD, TN, and TP. Most parameters of leachate from pig manure compost was higher than others. Both TN and TP concentrations were reflecting the composition of manure itself. It is recommended, therefore that the leachate from the manure composts should be controlled not to be discharged into streams.

The changes of soil physico-chemical properties were investigated in the sandy loam soil amended with various application rates of chicken and pig manure composts. After repeated application of the composts for 3 years, total nitrogen content in soil treated with applied 120Mg/ha of chicken and pig manure composts was 2.1 g/kg equally. Organic matter content was 38.8 and 39.1 g/kg, available phosphate content was 602 and 585 mg/kg, and cation exchange capacity(CEC) was 10.1 and 12.4 cmol/kg in chicken and pig manure compost 120 Mg/ha treatment, respectively. Exchangeable K, Ca, Na, Mg contents, and electrical conductivity(EC) increased with the amount of applied compost. Also, with increased amount of applied compost, porosity of soil increased, but hardness, bulk density and Y value decreased.

One of the methods to solve the problems of over-produced livestock manure, which are produced 34 million tons or more every year in Korea, is the using of these organic resources in rice cultivation. Experiments were carried out to find our the marginal application rime of pig manure without the injury for rice cultivation, dry and compost pig manure were incorporated separately in paddy field on several different time before rice transplanting. lt could be concluded that not only both manures were able to incorporate anytime before transplanting without the injury to rice growth, but also application of CPM and DPM to the rice paddy soil can be possible. However, 50% of the recommended application of chemical fertilizer was possible when the pig manure was incorporated in the paddy field for rice production.

This study was conducted to make a rapid and easy determination for the fertility of liquid pig manure as fertilizer by investigating the contents, and correlation coefficients of various nutrients. Samples were collected from 118 local pig farms in the western area of Jeju in Korea. Electrical conductivity(EC), dry matter(DM), $NH_4-N$ and minerals were determined and the relationships among them were examined. The collected liquid manure samples from 118 pig farms were classified according to the level of DM contents ;< 3% (92 farms), $3{\sim}6%$ (18 farms), $6{\sim}9%$ (5 farms) and>9% (3 farms), based on the collected data, most of the liquid manure coming from the local pig farms contain small amount of dry matter. The dry matter contents appeared highly correlated(p<0.01) with EC, $NH_4-N$, T-P, Ca, Mg and Na, except for K. In addition EC was proportional to $NH_4-N$, T-P, Ca, and Na except fer Mg. The fertilizer component ratio of $NH_4-N$, P and K in liquid pig manure were not constant, resulting in low efficiency for fertilizer. However, the toxic heavy metals of Cu etc. were below the criteria of organic fertilizer and soil contamination evaluation. Therefore, we concluded that both dry matter content and electrical conductivity could be used as an indicator for evaluating the fertility of liquid pig manure.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of application time and amount of liquid pig manure on growth and yield of rice plant and infiltration water quality. Liquid manure treatment with higher application rate and closer application time to transplanting time showed higher plant height and number of tiller at panicle formation stage, but it caused the plant disease and pest and lodging. In liquid manure treatment with higher application rate, number of panicles per hill and number of spikelets per panicle were higher but yield of rice was less than chemical fertilizer treatment due to low rate of ripeness and 1,000 grain weight. $NO_3-N$ concentration in infiltration water sample was increased with increasing application amount of liquid manure and closer application time to transplanting of rice plant. With consideration yield of rice and environment such as groundwater quality, the proper application amount were 150% and 100% of recommending N fertilizer level (11kg) at before winter and April or May treatment, respectively.
The effect of application rate of pig or chicken manure on the seasonal change of tomato(Minicarol) rhizosphere microflora was investigated by field experiment were surface soil(16cm) mixed with manures 1 weeks before transplanting. 1. Rhizobacteria population of control plot decreased 5 weeks after transplanting(WAT) than 1 WAT and 1.5~2 times higher colony counting was found in DNB(Diluted nutrient broth medium) than NB(Nutrient broth medium) at 15 WAT. 2. Rhizobacteria population at 1 WAT inereased in NB medium with the application rate of both manures but decreased in DNB with chicken manure. Colony counting in NB of 60 and 120 mg/ha treatment was 100 times higher than that of the control. However, rhizobacteria in DNB at 15 WAT(harvest stage) was much higher than that of NB. 3. Application rate did not affect fungi population 1 WAT in pig manure but decresed in chicken manure. At 15 WAT fungi population was 2 times higher than 1 WAT with chieken manure and highest in 30 mg/ha but with pig manure decreased with rate than the control. 4. Actinomycetes population at 1WAT was not different among pig manure rates and decreased with chicken manure than control. At 15 WAT population increased in all manure rates. especially in 10 mg/ha pig manure and 30 mg/ha chicken manure 4 times that 1 WAT.
