Two degrees of freedom resonant systems are employed to improve the resonant property of resonant sensor, as compared to a single degree of freedom resonant system. This paper presents design, development and testing of two degrees of freedom resonant sensor. To measure absolute mass, cantilever shaped two different masses (smaller/absorber mass and bigger/drive mass) with identical resonant frequency are mechanically linked to form 2 - Degree-of-Freedom (DOF) resonator which exhibits higher amplitude of displacement at the smaller mass. The same concept is extended for measuring differential quantity, by having two bigger mass and one smaller mass. The main features of this work are the 3 - DOF resonator for differential detection and the microcontroller based closed loop electronics for resonant sensor with piezoelectric sensing and excitation. The advantage of using microcontroller is that the method can be easily extended for any range of measurand.

The practical applications of piezoelectric ceramics are applied not only under low electric field environment. Therefore, an examination for characteristics of PZT ceramics under the high electric field condition can contribute to reducing the susceptibility of multifarious applications and to facilitating production of control circuits. These contributions can lead to the expansion of industrial applications. In this research, we fabricated disk-type PZT ceramic samples using conventional methods, measured the resonance characteristics of these samples under from low to high voltage conditions and calculated the PZT constants.

This study considers the instability behavior of sandwich plates considering magnetorheological (MR) fluid core and piezoelectric reinforced facesheets. As facesheets at the top and bottom of structure have piezoelectric properties they are subjected to 3D electric field therefore they can be used as actuator and sensor, respectively and in order to control the vibration responses and loss factor of the structure a proportional-derivative (PD) controller is applied. Furthermore, Halpin-Tsai model is used to determine the material properties of facesheets which are reinforced by graphene platelets (GPLs). Moreover, because the core has magnetic property, it is exposed to magnetic field. In addition, Kelvin-Voigt theory is applied to calculate the structural damping of the piezoelectric layers. In order to consider environmental forces applied to structure, the visco-Pasternak model is assumed. In order to consider the mechanical behavior of structure, sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT) is assumed and Hamilton's principle according to piezoelasticity theory is employed to calculate motion equations and these equations are solved based on differential cubature method (DCM) to obtain the vibration and modal loss factor of the structure subsequently. The effect of different factors such as GPLs distribution, dimensions of structure, electro-magnetic field, damping of structure, viscoelastic environment and boundary conditions of the structure on the vibration and loss factor of the system are considered. In order to indicate the accuracy of the obtained results, the results are validated with other published work. It is concluded from results that exposing magnetic field to the MR fluid core has positive effect on the behavior of the system.
In this study, a molecular dynamics simulation study was performed to investigate the size-dependent electroelastic properties of single-walled boron nitride nanotubes(BNNT). To describe the elasticity and polarization of BNNT under mechanical loading, the Tersoff potential model and rigid ion approximation were adopted. For the prediction of piezoelectric constants and Young's modulus of BNNTs, piezoelectric constitutive equations based on the Maxwell's equation were used to calculate the strain-electric displacement and strain-stress relationships. It was found that the piezoelectric constants of BNNTs gradually decreases as the radius of the tubes increases showing a nonnegligible size effect. On the other hand, the elastic constants of the BNNTs showed opposites trends according to the equivalent geometrical assumption of the tubular structures. To establish the structure-property relationships, localized configurational change of the primarily bonded B-N bonded topology was investigated in detail to elucidate the BNNT curvature dependent elasticity.

Thick film mechanical sensors can be categorized into four main areas piezoresistive, piezoelectric, capacitive and mechanic tube. In this areas, the thick film strain gage is the earliest example of a primary sensing element based on the substrates. The latest thick film sensor is used various pastes that have been specifically developed for pressure sensor application. Some elastic materials exhibit a change in bulk resistivity when they are subjected to displacement by an applied pressure. This property is referred to as piezoresistivity and is a major factor influencing the sensitivity of a piezoresistive strain gage. The effect of thick film resistors was first noticed in the early 1970, as described by Holmes in his paper in 1973.
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a stable and biocompatible material that has been broadly used in biomedical applications. Due to its piezoelectric property, the electrospun nanofiber of PVDF has been used to culture electroactive cells, such as osteocytes and cardiomyocytes. Here, taking advantage of the piezoelectric property of PVDF, we have fabricated a PVDF nanofiber scaffolds using an electrospinning technique for differentiating human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) into neural precursors (NPs). Surface coating with a peptide derived from vitronectin enables hESCs to firmly adhere onto the nanofiber scaffolds and differentiate into NPs under dual-SMAD inhibition. Our nanofiber scaffolds supported the differentiation of hESCs into SOX1-positive NPs more significantly than Matrigel. The NPs generated on the nanofiber scaffolds could give rise to neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocyte precursors. Furthermore, comparative transcriptome analysis revealed the variable expressions of 27 genes in the nanofiber scaffold groups, several of which are highly related to the biological processes required for neural differentiation. These results suggest that a PVDF nanofiber scaffold coated with a vitronectin peptide can serve as a highly efficient and defined culture platform for the neural differentiation of hESCs.

This paper presents an approach to define an optimal piezoactuator length to actively control structural vibration. The optimal ratio of the piezoactuator length against the beam length when a pair of piezoceramic actuator and accelerometer is used to suppress unwanted vibration with direct velocity feedback(DVFB) control strategy is not clearly defined so far. It is well known that DVFB control can be very useful when a pair of sensor and actuator is collocated on structures with a high gain and excellent stability. It is considered that three different collocated Pairs of piezoelectric actuators (20, 50 and 100 mm long) and accelerometers installed on three identical clamped-clamped beams($30{\times}20{\times}1mm$). The response of each sensor-actuator pair requires strictly positive real(SPR) property to apply a high feedback gain. However the length of the piezoactuator affects the SPR property of the sensor-actuator response. Intensive simulation and experiment show the effect of the actuator length variation is strongly related with the frequency range of the SPR property. Thus an optimal length ratio was suggested to obtain relevant performance with a good stability under the DVFB strategy.

Piezoelectric properties of sintered specimen having a tetragonal phase of $Pb_{0.9888}Sr_{0.012}(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_{3}$ were comparatively studied with two different poling methodes, i.e., DC field and corona discharge technique. Internal stress of poled specimens by indentation fracture toughness was analyzed to evaluate degradation phenomenon. As the results, it was confirmed that corona discharge poling technique is practicable and has merits such as low-temperature poling, slow degradation and no electric breakdown comparing to DC field poling. However, corona discharge technique showed lower Kp value than DC field poling.
Pyroelectric properties, figure of merits, and the other properties of the Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 system, as expected to have excellent pyroelectric properties in the operating temperature range of pyroelectric type infrared sensor, were investigated. In the Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 system, suppression of the pyrochlore phase depended on sintering condition, as like sintering temperature, holding time, sintering atmosphere. The specimen, sintered by the same composition atmosphere powder at 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 1.5h, possessed the best physical property. It was found that the piezoelectric parameters were mainly depended on the amount of spontaneous polarization and then the 0.2PZN-0.8PFN showed the best pyro- and piezoelectric properties. In terms of the experimental method, two pyroelectric-testing methods, i.e. static and dynamic methods, had a same tendency. Also the result of pyroelectric testing by the static method indicated that the diffuse phase transitiion resulted in the temperature difference of phase transition between dielectric constant and pyroelectric coefficient.

The formula to calculate a variation of optical path length of single crystal by the electric field was derived by this study. The formula was applied to $Bi_{12}SiO_{20}$ single crystal. The results are as follows. In case of the applied electric field in the body diagonal direction and the passing light along the same direction, the variation of optical path length had the largest value. The symmetry of the space distribution of optical path length satisfied $E3C_2\;8C_3$, the set of elements of the symmetry of $Bi_{12}SiO_{20}$ single crystal. The property which gave the largest influence to the variation of optical path length is the strain of length by the Inverse piezoelectric effect. The second influence, is the variation of the refractive index by the electro-optic effect. The variation of optical path length by the inverse piezoelectric effect and by the electro-optic effect have a reverse sign each other.
