In order to investigate the performance of compression-type accelerometer on piezoelectric properties, PZT materials have been studied. The ring-shaped piezoelectric elements were prepared using commercial PZT powders by conventional ceramic process. Their estimated relative dielectric constant, piezoelectric charge constant (d33) and voltage constant (g33) values showed 390∼3400, (90∼593)×10-12 C/N and (19.5∼40.5)×10-3 V-m/N, respectively. The charge sensitivity of accelerometer is proportional to the piezoelectric charge constant value (d33) of PZT, but its voltage sensitivity is related with the piezoelectric voltage constant (g33). Since the mounted resonance frequency and sensitivity are dependent on the seismic mass as well as physical charateristics and size of PZT elements, the suitable considerations between two components are required for accelerometer's design.
In-plane piezoelectric charge constant of Electro-Active paper (EAPap) was investigated based on direct and converse piezoelectric effects. EAPap samples were made with cellulose film with very thin gold electrode coated on both sides of the film. To characterize direct piezoelectricity of EAPap, induced charge was measured when mechanical stress was applied to EAPap. In-plane piezoelectric charge constant was extracted from the relation between induced charge and applied in-plane normal stress. To investigate converse piezoelectricity, induced in-plane strain was measured when electric field was applied to EAPap. Piezoelectric charge constant was also extracted from the relation of induced in-plane strain and applied electric field. Piezoelectric charge constants obtained from direct and converse piezoelectricity are 31 pC/N and 178 x 10-12m/V for 45 degree sample, respectively. Measured piezoelectric charge constants of EAPap provide promising potential as a piezoelectric material.
Piezoelectric composites of O-3 connectivity were prepared by thermosetting barium titanate-phenolic resin composite under various cruing pressure. Among three kinds of pore in O-3 type ceramic-polymer composite, such as matrix pores, particle pores, and ceramic-polymer interface pores, the effect of interface porosity on the dielectric and piezoelectric constant was investigated. In pure barium titanate ceramics, the porosity factor of dielectric and piezoelectric constants were 5.7 and 5.0, respectively. However, in BaTiO3-polymer composite, the interface porosity factor of the piezoelectric constant was greater than that of the dielectric constant, interface porosity factor b in d33 was 9.8 and in r 4.6. On the other, piezoelectric voltage constant g33 was independent of the porosity of barium titanate ceramics. But in composite system, the piezoelectric voltage constant g33 was decreased with interface porosity.
The temperature dependence of piezoelectric strain constant and the electric field induced strain are investigated as a function of PT in 0.5[xPT-(1-x)PZ]-0.5PNN ceramics. The piezoelectric strain constant d31 has the highest value(360$\times$10-12m/V) at PT=0.68. The temperature dependence of d31 is improved as Curie temperature of sample is increased, and the electric field dependence of induced strain is decreased with the coercive field increased. This ceramic system shows both piezoelectric effect and electrostrictive effect under the applied electric field. The piezoelectric of tetragonal phase is higher than that of rhombohedral phase, and the magnitude of electrostrictive constant is appeared in the order of morphotropic, rhombohedral and tetragonal phase. The piezoelectric strain constant with applied field must be considered theelectrostrictive effect due to 90$^{\circ}$domain wall displacements, and the displacement of bimorph type actuator agrees with the calulated value well.

A powder injection molding process is developed and optimized for piezoelectric PAN-PZT ceramics. Torque rheometer experiments are conducted to determine the optimal solids loading, and the rheological property of the feedstock is evaluated using a capillary rheometer. Appropriate debinding conditions are chosen using a thermal gravity analyzer, and the debound specimens are sintered using sintering conditions determined in a preliminary investigation. Piezoelectric performance measures, including the piezoelectric charge constant and dielectric constant, are measured to verify the developed process. The average values of the measured piezoelectric charge constant and dielectric constant are 455 pC/N and 1904, respectively. Powder injection molded piezoelectric ceramics produced by the optimized process show adequate piezoelectric performance compared to press-sintered piezoelectric ceramics.
Piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric constant of PZT-5H vary with electric field. In this work, variations of these coefficients with electric field are included in finite element modelling of a cantilevered plate instrumented with piezoelectric patches. Finite element model is reduced using modal truncation and then converted into state-space. First three modal displacements and velocities are estimated using Kalman observer. Negative first modal velocity feedback is used to control the vibrations of the smart plate. Three cases are considered v.i.z case 1: in which variation of piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric constant with electric field is not considered in finite element model and not considered in Kalman observer, case 2: in which variation of piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric constant with electric field is considered in finite element model and not considered in Kalman observer and case 3: in which variation of piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric constant with electric field is considered in finite element model as well as in Kalman observer. Simulation results show that appreciable amount of change would appear if variation of piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric constant with r.m.s. value of electric field is considered.
In this study, in order to develop the lead-free piezoelectric ceramics with high piezoelectric and dielectric properties, $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})(Nb_{0.97}Sb_{0.03})O_3$ ceramics were fabricated using a conventional mixed oxide process and their piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated according to the $K_{5.4}Cu_{1.3}Ta_{10}O_{29}$ addition. $K_{5.4}Cu_{1.3}Ta_{10}O_{29}$ addition enhanced density, electromechanical coupling factor($k_p$) piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ and mechanical quality factor($Q_m$). At the 0.9 mol% $K_{5.4}Cu_{1.3}Ta_{10}O_{29}$ addition, density, electromechanical coupling factor($k_p$), dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}_r$) and piezoelectric constant($d_{33}$) of specimen showed the optimum values of 0.46, 471, and 148 pC/N, respectively.
In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering piezoelectric actuator, $Pb(Mg_{1/2}W_{1/2})_{0.03}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_x(Zr_{0.50},Ti_{0.50})_{1-x-0.03}$ (PMW-PNN-PZT) ceramic systems were fabricated using $CaCO_3-Li_2CO_3$ sintering aid and their dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated with the variation of PNN substitution. The piezoelectric actuator requires high piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ and high electromechanical coupling factor kp. At the PMW-PNN-PZT ceramics with 9mol% PNN substitution sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, the density, electromechanical coupling factor kp, dielectric constant, piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ and mechanical quality factor Qm showed the excellent values of 7.86 [$g/cm^3$], 0.584, 1881, 485 [pC/N] and 76, respectively for piezoelectric actuator application.
The load characteristics on the voltage gain and efficiency were analyzed using a lumped constant equivalent circuit of the piezoelectric transformer. These analytical results were confirmed by experiments. Theoretical values of voltage gain were nearly constant with experimental ones. However, It was shown that theoretical values of efficiency is higher than experimental ones.
