The Backlight inverter used in the laptop computer is designed in this study. It has been difficult for electromagnetic transformer to enhance the efficiency and compact profile. In this study, (l) the piezoelectric transformer(PT) is used for reducing the loss: (2) the volume of core and winding coil are used in electromagnetic transformer, and (3) the zero voltage switching(ZVS) is used in the driver of the resonant circuit. The modified PT for this paper and the equivalent circuit are supported by the simulation program. ZVS is achieved by Half-Bridge inverter circuit. The result of the experiment shows more than 91% improvement in terms of the efficiency.

To augment weakly damped lag mode stability of a hingeless helicopter rotor blade in hover, piezoelectric shunt with a resistor and an inductor circuits for passive damping has been studied. A shunted piezoceramics bonded to a flexure of rotor blade converts mechanical strain energy to electrical charge energy which is dissipated through the resistor in the R-L series shunt circuit. Because the fundamental lag mode frequency of a soft-in-plane hingeless helicopter rotor blade is generally about 0.7/rev, the design frequency of the blade system with flexure sets to be so. Experimentally, the measured lag mode frequency is 0.7227/rev under the short circuit condition. Therefore the suppression mode of this passive damping vibration absorber is adjusted to 0.7227/rev. As a result of damping enhancement using passive control, the passive damper which consists of a piezoelectric material and shunt circuits has a stabilizing effect on inherently weakly damped lag mode of the rotor blades, at the optimum tuning and resistor condition.
Piezoelectric composite films which are enabled by inorganic piezoelectric nanomaterials-embedded polymer, have attracted enormous attention as a sustainable power source for low powered electronics, because of their ease of fabrication and flexible nature. However, the absorption of applied stress by the soft polymeric matrices is a major issue that must be solved to expand the fields of piezoelectric composite applications. Herein, a flexible and porous piezoelectric composite (piezoelectric sponge) comprised of BaTiO3 nanoparticles and polydimethylsiloxane was developed using template method to enhance the energy conversion efficiency by minimizing the stress that vanishes into the polymer matrix. In the porous structure, effective stress transfer can occur between the piezoelectric active materials in compression mode due to direct contact between the ceramic particles embedded in the pore-polymer interface. The piezoelectric sponge with 30 wt% of BaTiO3 particles generated an open-circuit voltage of ~12 V and a short-circuit current of ~150 nA. A finite element method-based simulation was conducted to theoretically back up that the piezoelectric output performance was effectively improved by introducing the sponge structure. Furthermore, to demonstrate the feasibility of pressure detecting applications using the BaTiO3 particles-embedded piezoelectric sponge, the composite was arranged in a 3 × 3 array and integrated into a single pressure sensor. The fabricated sensor array successfully detected the shape of the applied pressure. This work can provide a cost-effective, biocompatible, and structural strategy for realizing piezoelectric composite-based energy harvesters and self-powered sensors with improved energy conversion efficiency.
Damping out high frequency low amplitude structural vibrations using PZT bimorph is presented. Static and Dynamic analyses of the piezoelectric bimorph bender were performed. Three layer piezoelectric actuators were modeled with SOLID5 coupled-field elements using ANSYS. Static deflection and modal analyses of the piezoelectric bimorph bender are presented. Proper tuning of the values of the resistor and inductor in the shunt circuit is required for maximum vibration suppression.
This paper presents a piezoelectric shunt methodology to reduce unwanted vibration of optical disk drive(O.D.D.). After briefly investigating a second-order mechanical vibration absorber model, the O.D.D. structure is incorporated with the piezoelectric shunt circuit. In order to evaluate feasibility of multi-mode passive damping of the structure, admittance measurement of piezoceramic is undertaken. The parameters are optimally tuned by admittance measurement results on the basis of the circuit model and displacement transmissibility is evaluated. To verify validity of admittance measurement result, experiment is performed and vibration reduction is achieved at two different modes.
The static characteristic of a piezoelectric beam is for finding resonance frequency of the beam. In practice, it is required to analyze the beam with external command circuit including capacitors, inductors, and resistors for control. It means that the proper analysis of a piezoelectric beam with external command circuit is required by a dynamic analysis. We can also got transient and steady-state solution from the analysis. In this paper, the static and dynamic characteristic of the piezoelectric beam using FEM(Finite Element Method) are proposed.
This paper presents a piezoelectric shunt methodology to reduce unwanted vibration of optical disk drive(O.D.D.). After briefly investigating a second-order mechanical vibration absorber model, the O.D.D. structure is incorporated with the piezoelectric shunt circuit. In order to identify modal parameter of the structure, a finite element analysis is undertaken. The parameters are optimally tuned on the basis of the circuit model. The displacement transmissibility is evaluated and compared with various resistance values.
The aim of this review is to acquaint a circuit designer with features of piezoelectric ceramic transformers(PT) and to show the general approach to the design of inverters utilizing PT as a circuit element. The description of the piezoelectric effect is not present here and can be easily found in numerous publications as well as complex equations and formulae. What is the most important to understand is that "they are different" - one cannot just change an electromagnetic transformer (EMT) for a piezoelectric one. Several examples of PT-based circuitry will help to start and use PT's advantages most effectively.
In this paper, we show that, in case of piezoelectric micropower generator, just replacing Schottky diodes in the bridge rectifier with ultra-low reverse leakage current diodes improves the mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency by more than 100%. Experimental and PSPICE simulation results show that, due to the ultra-low leakage current, the charging speed of the circuit employing PAD1 is higher than that of the circuit employing Schottky diodes and the saturation voltage of the circuit employing PAD1 is also higher. This study suggests that , when the internal impedance of source is very large (a few tens of $M{\Omega}$) such that maximum charging current is a few microamperes or less, in order to realize literally the energy scavenging system, ultra-low reverse leakage current diodes should be used for efficient energy conversion. Since low-level vibration is ubiquitous in the environment ranging from human movement to large infrastructures and the mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency is much more critical for use of these vibrations, we believe that the improvement in the efficiency using ultra-low leakage diodes, as found in this work, will widen greatly the application of piezoelectric micropower generator.
