A better understanding of nitrogen transformations in soils is essential to increase fertilizer nitrogen use efficiency. A laboratory incubation study was conducted to determine net mineralization and nitrification in selected Piedmont soils. Net mineralization and nitrification increased up to 60 days in the surface layers of Enon, Mecklenburg and Chewacla. After 60 days both processes declined up to 90 days incubation. In Wehadkee, mineralization and nitrification did not differ with incubation time. In all subsurface layers, mineralization and nitrification increased with time up to 90 days. Mineralization and nitrification differed among soils in surface and subsurface layers. These differences might be influenced by soil type related to amount of mineralization, soil aeration and nitrifying bacterial populations. A mineralization and nitrification was greater in surface layers than in subsurface layers.
Determination of N mineralization and nitrification potentials of selected Piedmont soils of North Carolina requires a better understanding of the influences of incorporated plant residues. The net N mineralization and nitrification were significantly influenced by the soil types and by plant species. The net N mineralization and nitrification of soils mixed with plant residues were consistently increased with successional incubation periods. The net mineralization and nitrification ranged from $9.77{\mu}g/g$ to $143.80{\mu}g/g$, and from $5.31{\mu}g/g$ to $145.66{\mu}g/g$ during the incubation periods, respectively. The net N mineralization was more influenced by NO3-N than by NH4-N. Overall, the greatest proportions of net N mineralization and nitrification occurred in Chewacla and Wehadkee and lowest in Enon and Mecklenburg. For the plant residues, the net N mineralization and nitrification were observed to be lowest in corn and highest in soybean. In a low-input agricultural systems, soybean may be planted as cover crop which may improve the nitrogen status of selected Piedmont soils of North Carolina.

A field study was conducted to develop an economically suitable combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers for sugarcane cultivation in sandy acidic soil of a commercial sugarcane farm under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain of Bangladesh. Results revealed that the treatment $T_4$ which received $75\%$ of Recommended fertilizers (N 120, P 35, K 100, S 25, Zn 2 kg $ha^{-1}$) + 10 Mg $ha^{-1}$ Rice mill ash + Mg $ha^{-1}$ press mud significantly produced higher sugarcane yield (72.34 Mg $ha^{-1}$) among all the treatments except $T_5$ having $100\%$ of Recommended fertilizers + 10 Mg $ha^{-1}$ Rice mill ash + 10 Mg $ha^{-1}$ press mud, which was identical. $T_4$ also gave the highest net economic benefit at Bangladesh Taka 15,920.47 per hectare from the added nutrient management. Thus, the integrated use with organic and inorganic fertilizer is highly essential for sustainable production of sugarcane in commercial farm of the region in Bangladesh, where it has been grown year after year.
The present study evaluated the soil microbial communities by fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) in upland soils at 25 sites in Gyeongnam Province. The total bacteria content was $143nmol\;g^{-1}$ for in inclined piedmont, $75nmol\;g^{-1}$ for fan and valley, $49nmol\;g^{-1}$ for hill areas, and $44nmol\;g^{-1}$ for riversider plain. The fungi content was 2.4 times higher in sandy loam than $21nmol\;g^{-1}$ in silt loam (p<0.01). In addition, inclined piedmont soils had a significantly higher ratio of monounsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids compared with fan and valley soils (p<0.05). The communities of total bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the inclined piedmont soils were significantly higher than those in the fan and valley soils and in the riversider plain soils (p<0.05), whereas the community of fungi was significantly lower (p<0.05). In principal component analyses of soil microbial communities, our findings showed that inclined piedmont was positive relationship with total bacteria and actinomycetes in upland soils.
A field study was conducted to investigate and ascertain the effects of boron and molybdenum with recommended N P K S Zn fertilizers (RFD) for sustained sugarcane yield in the sandy acidic soil in Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain of Bangladesh. Results revealed that the treatment $T_7$ having recommended fertilizers of N 120, P 35, K 100, S 25 and Zn 2kg $ha^{-1}$ + B 2kg $ha^{-1}$ + Mo 2 kg $ha^{-1}$ produced significantly higher number of millable cane (126.96\times10^3\;ha^{-1})$ except in $T_9$ with RFD + B 2 kg $ha^{-1}$ + Mo 4kg $ha^{-1}$, and higher cane yield (92.83 Mg $ha^{-1}$) among all except in $T_3$ with RFD + B2 kg $ha^{-1}$, $T_5$ with RFD + Mo 2kg $ha^{-1}$ and $T_9$ where the effects were statistically identical. The increase in cane yield by $T_7$ was $164.6\%$ over control. The treatment $T_7$ having RFD + B 2kg $ha^{-1}$ + Mo 2kg $ha^{-1}$ further gave the highest additional net economic benefit of Taka 16, 500.00 for added Band Mo at 2kg $ha^{-1}$ among all the treatments in the study.
Several soil properties were studied from three young created mitigation wetlands (<10 years old), which were hydrologically comparable in the Piedmont region of Virginia. The properties included soil organic matter (SOM), soil organic carbon (SOC), pH, gravimetric soil moisture, and bulk density ($D_b$). No significant differences were found in the soil properties between the wetlands, except SOM and SOC. SOM and SOC indicated a slight increase with wetland age; the increase was more evident with SOC. Only about a half of SOC variability found in the wetlands was explained by SOM ($R^2$ = 0.499, p < 0.05). The majority of the ratios of SOM to SOC for these silt-loam soils ranged from 2.0 to 3.5, which was higher than the 1.724 Van Bemmelen factor, commonly applied for the conversion of SOM into SOC in estimating the carbon storage or accumulation capacity of wetlands. The results may caution the use of the conversion factor, which may lead to an overestimation of carbon sequestration potentials of newly created wetlands. SOC, but not SOM, was also correlated to $D_b$, which indicates soil compaction typical of most created wetlands that might limit vegetation growth and biomass production, eventually affecting carbon accumulation in the created wetlands.
Jeomal Cave consists of limestone. Soil distribution is very different from mountain area to piedmont area. The Cave developed in a part of the fault valley. The joints controls the low level stream orders in the cave. in this area the geological structure is close relate to the underground water flow. It is certain that the distribution of the clay came from the surface.
Soil microbial diversity was responsible for a strong effect on the chemical properties of orchard soils. This study evaluated a relationship between soil chemical properties and soil microbial diversities at 25 sites in orchard soils in Gyeongnam Province. The average nutrients in the orchard soils were 2.6 times for available phosphorous, 2.3 times for exchangeable potassium and 1.3 times for exchangeable calcium higher compared to recommend concentrations in the orchard soils. Contents of available phosphorous and organic matter in the inclined piedmont soils were higher than those in the other topographical soils (p<0.05). Populations of fungi and fluorescence Pseudomonas sp. in the silt loam soils were significantly higher than those in the sandy loam soils (p<0.05). In principal component analysis of chemical properties and microbial populations in the upland soils, our findings suggested that population of bacteria should be considered as potential factor responsible for the clear orchard soils differentiation. The soil organic matter was significantly negative correlation with population of bacteria whereas was positive correlation with population of fungi in orchard soils.
Soil management for environment-friendly agriculture depends on the effects of soil microbial activities and soil fertility. To improve soil health for the upland crops, this study evaluated a relationship between soil chemical properties and soil microbial diversities at 25 sites in upland soils in Gyeongnam Province. The average nutrients in the upland soils were 1.7 times for available phosphorous, 1.4 times for exchangeable potassium and 1.5 times for exchangeable calcium higher compared to recommend concentrations in the upland soils. We found a significant positive correlation between the soil organic matter and the soil microbial biomass C (p<0.01). Contents of organic matter and dehydrogenase in the inclined piedmont soils were significantly higher than those in the other topographical soils (p<0.05). In addition, concentrations of organic matter and microbial biomass C in the loam soils were significantly higher than in the silt loam soils (p<0.05). In principal component analyses of chemical properties and microbial populations in the upland soils, our findings suggested that available phosphorous should be considered as potential factor responsible for the clear upland soils differentiation. The soil organic matter was positive correlation with Bacillus sp. and fungi, whereas soil pH was also positive correlation with Pseudomonas sp. in upland soils.
Forty six natural habitats of Korean lespedeza(Leapedeza stipulacea Maxim.) were investigated for the growth characteristics, mineral contents of plant and the physico-chemical properties of natural habitat's soil compared with the upland soil nearby the habitat. The results obtained were summarized as follows. Plant height and dry matter yield were higher in the samples taken in late than early August showing large variation within the sampling date and location. Korean lespedeza showed higher contents of Fe and Mn, but lower contents of K, Ca, Mg and Cu than Alfalfa. The contents of P and Zn were about the same. The natural habitat showed higher soil pH and Ca content but lower contents of $P_2O_5$, K, and organic matter than the vicinity of natural habitats and the average soil of Korea. The contents of Mg were about the same. The soil texture of natural habitats showed much higher portion of sand and extremely low portions of silt and clay than both area. Korean lespedeza is so well adapted to the soil with low fertilizer and organic matter that other crops and most weeds fail. It also appears to thrive on the sandy loams, loamy sands of the piedmont region such as waste land and on the similar soils with variously physico-chemical properties.
