Effects of insulation after exposure of the extremities on the temperature regulation in clothed men were studied. Experiment was carried out with six males in a climatic chamber fixed at $10^{\circ}C$, $55\%$ R.H. treated with Type A (face only was exposed) and Type B (face and half of the extremities were exposed). Mean skin temperature fell greater in Type B due to intense vasoconstriction than in Type A. Rectal temperature rose a little in Type B and resumed in Type A without any significant differences in metabolism between two types of clothing. These findings suggest that Type B is more effective in physiological defense to the cold stimuli than Type A at least at $10^{\circ}C$.

We investigated that the immunomodulating activity of BL18 (Ganshu) acupuncture on the experimental liver metastasis model of mice. NA (non-acupoint)- and BL18-treatment enhanced the mitogenic activity of BALB/c whole splenocytes induced by various mitogenic stimuli. Acupuncture treatment tended to increase splenocytes differentiation even though did not show significance. Acupuncture treatment caused a marked increase of production of Th1 cytokine (IFN-${\gamma}$) and Th2 cytokine (IL-4) by splenocytes and IL-12 and IFN-Y by macrophages. The increase of cytokine production on BL18-treated group was more pronounced compared to NA-treated group. The liver weight of NA- and BL18-treated group decreased compared to tumor group, but did not showed significant differences.

It was reported that Dipsaci Radix has decrease pain effect on the Complex Region Pain Syndrome(CRPS). the CRPS was induced by unilateral loose occlusion in 4 part of the sciatic nerve of the rats. For the fingding significantly change on CRPS rats were divided into 4 different experimental groups. and each groups were induced CRPS. Experimental group I (control group; n=15), experimental group II (100 mg/kg Dipsaci Radix dieted rats; n=15), experimental group III (300 mg/kg Dipsaci Radix dieted rats; n=15), and experimental group IV(500 mg/kg Dipsaci Radix dieted rats; n=15). The study of Dipsaci Radix concentration was that foot withdrawal threshold to the thermal stimuli(Hot plate test), foot withdrawal threshold to the mechanical stimuli(von Frey's filament) and immunohistochemistry staining that were substance P. Hot plate test and von Frey Filament were increase in experimental group II, III, IV than group I, especially group III was most significantly change than group II and IV in post-hoc(Duncan's multiple range). and In immunohistochemistry observation; group I showed increase in the group II, III, IV. especially group III had the minimal level of the substance P expression while the experimental group II, III. These results suggested that the Dipsaci Radix dieted made the decrease of pain in CRPS.

Shangwan(CV13), Zhongwan(CV12), Xiawan(CV10), Hefu(L14) and Taichong(LR3) which belong to Conception Vessel and stomach meridian are acupuncture points frequently used for healing gastrointestinal desease in oriental medicine. The present study was conducted to see the effects produced by combined acupuncture(A), electro-acupuncture(EA) and moxibustion using five acupoints which belongs to different meridians on serum gastrin level in rats. Electro-acupuncture (2 Hz, intensity; 10 times muscle twitch threshold) was applied for 30 minutes to Hefu(LI4), Taichong(LR3) under halothane anesthesia. Moxibustion ($1.6{\pm}0.3\;mg$, 5 times of a day) was applied during 3 days to CV10, CV12, CV13 under halothane anesthesia. Combined stimuli of acupuncture at Hefu(LI4), Taichong(LR3) and moxibustion at CV13, CV12 increased serum gastrin level significantly eventough combined simulus of moxibustion on CV 10 was not shown any change. And combined stimul of EA and moxibustion at experimental all groups were not shown any effects. These data suggest that effects of acupuncture and moxibustion are depentent with used acupoints and combination stimuli method.
The present study was performed to investigate modification in the electrophysiological characteristics of cat dorsal horn cells during neurogenic inflammation induced by mustard oil. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) Following subcutaneous injection of mustard oil the majority of wide dynamic range (WDR) cells (10/15 units) showed enhanced responses (80%) to brush, while the responses to all types of mechanical stiumli were enhanced in 3/15 units. One cell was further activated by pinch and the another was not affected at all after induction of inflammation. 2) The sensitization of WDR cell was resulted from subcutaneous injection of mustard oil either inside or outside of the receptive field (RF), whereas the spontaneous activity increased only after mustard oil was injected inside of the RF. 3) In the animal with inflammation the responses of high threshold (HT) cell to noxious stimulus were not altered, while HT cell responded to such mechanical stimulus as pressure which was usually ineffective in normal animals. 4) After induction of inflammation, low threshold (LT) cell appeared to be converted to WDR cell, showing responses not only to brush but also to pressure and pinch. 5) The mustard oil-induced inflammation enhanced responses of WDR and HT cells to the thermal stimuli and also resulted in a pronounced after-discharge in WDR cells. 6) After subcutaneous injection of lidocaine, the increased background activity of WDR cells due to inflammation was almost completely abolished. 7) A subcutaneous injection of mustard oil inside of the RF invariably desensitized the dorsal horn cells which receive sensory inputs from the inflamed RF. From the results of Present study it was revealed that a neurogenic inflammation induced by mustard oil resulted in an enhancement of responses of cat dorsal horn cells to mechanical and thermal stimuli.

We are exposed to the various external stimuli input from the environment, which cause emotional changes based on the characteristics of the stimuli. Unfortunately, there are no quantitative results on relationship between human sensibility and the characteristics of physiological signals. The objective of this study was to quantify EEG signals evoked by auditory stimulation based on the assumption that the analysis of the variability on the characteristics of the EEG waveform may provide the significant information regarding changes in psychological states of the subject. The experiment was devised with seven experimental conditions, which are control and six different types of auditory stimulation. Twenty subjects were used to obtain EEGs while introducing auditory stimulation. Wavelet transformation was employed to analyze the EEG signals. The results showed that the reconstructed signals at the decomposition level revealed the different energy value on the EEG signals. Also, general patterns of EEG signals in rest state compare with negative and positive stimulus were found. This study could be extended to estabilish an algorithm which distinguishes psychophysiological states of the subjects exposed to the auditory stimulation.

The human visual cortex has the characteristic that reacts sensitively to stimuli with special directional or temporal frequency changes while it is insensitive to selective stimuli of spatial phases. In this paper we implemented the model of complex cell using an image estimation iterative algorithm by Gabor wavelet transform. The performance of implemented model evaluated the consistency between the physiological experimental results in related papers. The implemented model is limited in the complete model of the receptive field in the retina where simple cells and complex cells are distributed together. But the implemented model express the reaction of the complex cells from the point of view of the detection of corners and edges.
Physiological responses have been measured to recognize emotion. Although physiological responses have been interrelated between organs, their connectivities have been less considered for emotion recognizing. The connectivities have been assumed to enhance emotion recognition. Specially, autonomic nervous system is physiologically modulated by the interrelated functioning. Therefore, this study has been tried to analyze connectivities between heart and respiration and to find the significantly connected variables for emotion recognition. The eighteen subjects(10 male, age $24.72{\pm}2.47$) participated in the experiment. The participants were asked to listen to predetermined sound stimuli (arousal, relaxation, negative, positive) for evoking emotion. The bio-signals of heart and respiration were measured according to sound stimuli. HRV (heart rate variability) and BRV (breathing rate variability) spectrum were obtained from spectrum analysis of ECG (electrocardiogram) and RSP (respiration). The synchronization of HRV and BRV spectrum was analyzed according to each emotion. Statistical significance of relationship between them was tested by one-way ANOVA. There were significant relation of synchronization between HRV and BRV spectrum (synchronization of HF: F(3, 68) = 3.605, p = 0.018, ${\eta}^2_p=0.1372$, synchronization of LF: F(3, 68) = 5.075, p = 0.003, ${\eta}^2_p=0.1823$). HF difference of synchronization between ECG and RSP has been able to classify arousal from relaxation (p = 0.008, d = 1.4274) and LF's has negative from positive (p = 0.002, d = 1.7377). Therefore, it was confirmed that the heart and respiration to recognize the dimensional emotion by connectivity.
Three hundred gram of Korean ginseng root was extracted with 95% ethanol on a boiling water bath for about 300 hr. Evaporation of alcohol yieled 50.2g of dark brown residue which was used by dissolving 4 mg of the residue in 1 ml of physiological saline. The ginseng group and the saline group received each day 0.5 ml per 100 g body weight of ginseng extract and physiological saline, respectively. Both the ginseng and saline group with stress were exposed to positive radial acceleration (1∼29g), cold (5$^{\circ}C$, 0$^{\circ}C$ &-10$^{\circ}C$) and heat (35$^{\circ}C$) environment, and surgical stress. After termination of the last stress, the tolerance, body weight, visceral organ weight, basal metabolism rate, rectal temperature, the number of erythrocyte and leucocyte, hemoglobin level, hematocrit ratio, total serum protein content and it's fraction and the content of adrenal ascorbic acid in the experimental animal exposed to stress were measured and at the corresponding periods, the same measurements were also carried out with the ginseng and the saline groups without stress exposure (serving as control). Results obtained were as follows. 1. Administration of ginseng does depressed the decrease of the tolerance, body weight, visceral organ weight, basal metabolism rate, the number of erythrocyte, hemoglobin value, hematocrit ratio and the A/G ratio in the mice and rats exposed to various stress. 2. The change of the rectal temperature, eosinophile counts, total serum protein content and the content of adrenal ascorbic acid of ginseng group that exposured to various stress facilitates the reaction to, and accelerates the recovery from the stress. 3. Even after hypophysectomy which served the link between the central and the peripheral portion of the stress mechanism, the adrenal ascorbic acid content of ginseng group decreased significantly more than that of the saline group 30 min. after administration of ACTH, while the value approached the normal level significantly closer in the ginseng group than in the saline group 1 and 2 hr after ACTH administration. Judging from the above results, it is concluded that administration of ginseng extract tolerated the experimental animals under the environment of stressfu1 stmuli, although the ginseng has no significant influence upon the stress mechanism in the absence of stressful stimuli. The site of action of the ginseng appears to be in the peripheral portion of the stress mechanism.
To quantitatively analyze the effects of color stimulation which is one of the major affecting factors on human emotion, we studied the relationship between color preference and the Electroencephalography (EEG) to 3 color stimuli; bright yellow red (BYR), deep green yellow (DGY), and vivid blue (VB). Physiological signal measured by EEG on the color stimulation was closely related with their well-known colorful images. The brain become more activated with decreasing the color temperature (BYR${\geq}$DGY>VB), and the right brain is more sensitive than the left. On the whole, the EEG values of the frequency bands are in order to beta ${\geq}$ theta and alpha > gamma. As decreasing the color temperature, beta wave increased (BYR${\geq}$DGY>VB), and alpha, beta and gamma waves increased with increasing the color temperature (BYR${\geq}$DGY>VB). The relationship between the color preference and EEG values showed EEG gets more activated at some frequency bands when the color preference becomes higher. In conclusion, the specific frequency band could be activating by a color stimuli which had showed higher the preference. It means that these color stimuli can apply for various industries such as beauty industry, interior design, fashion design, color therapy, and etc.
