We investigated the effects of prolonged exposure in hot environmental condition and ingestion of fluid on various physiological variables including plasma glucose, lactate, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and heart rate as well as golf putting performance. Six male professional golfers were voluntarily participated in three different putting trials which were separated by seven days of time interval period. Three different putting trials were conducted at either 20℃ or 32℃, or 32℃ + Fluid ingestion. Performing 32℃ + Fluid ingestion trial, all subject ingested sport drink as much as their body mass was decreased. For each experiment, all subjects were undertaken total 48 putting, which separated by four x 12 putting in four different time points (i.e., Rest, 1 hr, 2 hr, and 3 hr). Plasma glucose concentration was significantly decreased with hot ambient condition but it was almost fully recovered by fluid ingestion. Plasma lactate concentration was significantly higher when subjects were exposed in hot environmental condition, and it did not change with fluid ingestion. There was a no different in putting performance and psychological fatigue level (performed by GRID test) at any environmental conditions. The RPE, commonly used for evaluating of physical fatigue level, was significantly dropped by fluid ingestion which indicates lower physical fatigue level. In addition to this, heart rate (HR) was also significantly decreased after fluid ingestion. Based on these results, it was concluded that the ingestion of fluid during prolonged exposure in hot ambient condition decrease the degree of physical fatigue levels and heart rate, which will possibly improve the golf performance when exposed in extreme weather condition in summer. A structured kinetic model is proposed to describe cell growth and secondary metabolite, flavone glycosides, synthesis in batch suspension culture of Scutellaria baicalensis G. The model has been developed by representing the physiological state of cell described as the activity and viability which can be estimated based on the culture fluorescence. In the model, three type of cells are considered; active-viable, nonactive-viable and dead cells. Viable cell weight could be determined based on the relative fluorescence intensity. The flavone glycosides could be produced by both active-viable and non-active viable cells with a different production rate. And the model includes the cell expansion due to glucose concentration and death phase which accounts for the release of intracellular secondary metabolite into medium. Dependent variables include substrate concentration(glucose), cell mass(dry cell weight and fresh cell weight), product concentration(flavone glycosides), activity and viability. Satisfactory agreement between the model and experimental data is obtained from shake flask culture of Scutellaria baicalensis G. The proposed model can predict the cell growth and flavone glycosides synthesis as well as intermediate materials.
A computational model representative of cardiovascular circulation was built using 12 standard lumped compartments. Especially, both the baroreceptor reflex and the cardiopulmonary reflex control model were implemented to explain the auto-regulation of cardiovascular system. Another important aspect of this model is to utilize the impulse-response curve of the nerve system in transferring the impulse error signals to autonomous nerve system. For the verification of this model, we have computed the normal hemodynamic conditions and compared those with the clinical data. Then. hemodynamic shock of 20% hemorrhage to cardiovascular system was simulated to test the effects of the control system model. The results of these two simulations were well matched with the experimental ones. The steady state LBNP simulation was also performed. The transient changes of hemodynamic variables due to ramp increase of bias pressure of LBNP showed good agreement with the physiological experiments. Numerical solution using only the baroreflex model showed relatively a larger deviation from the experimental data. compared with the one using the control model haying both the baroreflex and the cardiopulmonary reflex systems, which shows an important role of the cardiopulmonary reflex system for the simulation of the hemodynamic behavior of the cardiovascular system .
The purpose of this study was to propose a task-related circuits program for stroke patients and to test the difference in functional improvements between patients undergoing conventional physical therapy and those participating in a task-related circuits exercise program. The subjects were 10 stroke in-patients of the Korea National Rehabilitation Center in Seoul. We measured the following variables: Motor Assessment Scale (MAS), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Tone Assessment Scale (TAS), speed of gait, rate of step, physiological costs index, age, weight, height, site of lesion, onset day and whether the subject participated in an exercise program. Collected data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 10.0/PC using descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon rank sum test and Spearman's correlation. The results of the experiment were as follows: (1) In the pre-test and post-test for function, there was not a statistical significance between the group partaking in a task-related circuits program and the group of conventional physical therapy (p>.05). (2) In the MAS, BBS and speed of gait test, the group undergoing conventional physical therapy showed a statistical significance (p<.05). (3) In the MAS, BBS, speed of gait, PCI, TAS (passive, associated reaction, TAS total score), the group of task-related circuits program showed a statistical significance (p<.05). As a result, the group participating in a task-related circuits program had a more functional improvement than the group participating in conventional physical therapy. Therefore, an intervention recommended for a stroke patient would be a task-related circuits program consisting of a longer session of each task for a more improved functional recovery.
The purpose of this study was to explore convergence on the theory of unpleasant symptom, and factors affecting quality of life of liver cirrhosis patients. A total of 198 liver cirrhosis patients were recruited symptom experiences, physiologic factors, psychological factors, situational factors, and quality of life. Data were collected from March, to May, 2014 and analyzed using one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlations, multiple regressions analysis with PASW (SPSS) 21.0. Variables such as duration of liver cirrhosis(${\beta}=.19$, p<.001), symptom experiences(${\beta}=.19$, p=.032), physical(${\beta}=.15$, p=.008), psychological(${\beta}=.39$, p<.001) and situational factors(${\beta}=.32$, p<.001) explained 51.8% of variance in quality of life(F=15.57, p<.001). The symptom experiences, physiological, psychological and situational factors should be considered for caring liver cirrhosis patients. Symptoms of postmyocardial infarction (post-MI) patients at risk for progression to heart.
Objectives This study sought to investigate the relationship between age, sex and alterations in levels of % carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (%CDT) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) in patients admitted with alcohol dependence. Methods The study retrospectively enrolled 187 patients who were diagnosed with alcohol dependence according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth edition (DSM-IV) and were admitted into a closed ward in Hallym University Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital from 2009 to 2012 and Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital from 2012 to 2017. Demographic factors (age, sex) and biochemical markers [%CDT, GGT, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), aspartate transferase (AST), alanine transferase (ALT)] were collected by reviewing medical records. Alterations in the levels of %CDT and GGT in different groups for each demographic factor were compared after correcting for confounding variables (age, initial %CDT, GGT, MCV, AST, ALT). Results Decreased %CDT and GGT were observed during the period of abstinence after admission. The normalization period for %CDT increased with age, while the normalization period for GGT was longer in female patients. Conclusions These results suggest that alcohol-dependent patients that vary in age have different alterations in %CDT, while different sexes have different alterations in GGT. Age and sex can be potential indicators of treatment response after abstinence in patients with alcohol dependence. Further studies are needed to evaluate the relationship between these factors with regards to physiological and hematological changes in alcohol dependence.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of Inonotus obliquus as an functional resource. To assess the effects of Inonotus obliquus in culturing method by using unpolished rice in 15non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus persons, we examined changes of hematological and chemical variables, DM indices content in serum during the Inonotus obliquus supplementation. GOT, GPT concentrations were significantly decreased. But TIBC content was significantly increased. Fasting glucose level during Inonotus obliquus supplementation was decreased respectively. These results show that modest dose of Inonotus obliquus in culturing method by using unpolished rice supplementation can decrease fasting blood glucose level without any changes in health indices and nutrition status of the non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus person. These results indicated that Inonotus obliquus in culturing method by using unpolished rice diet is effective therapeutic regimen for the control of metabolic derangements in diabetes mellitus. Also, the results imply that Inonotus obliquus in culturing method by using unpolished rice can be used as possible functional food materials. However, large amounts of Inonotus obliquus in culturing method by using unpolished rice showed be used cautiously application.

The aim of this study is to analyze the research trend focusing on Yangseng(養生) studies in Korea. Through this study, the researchers attempt to explore the research trends of the Yangseng(養生) in Traditional Korean Medicine. Yangseng(養生) as a key word was searched on representative domestic databases of articles and the researchers and collected the articles of journals published from 1980 to 2012. Finally 350 articles of Yangseng(養生) were selected. After mid-2000s, Yangseng(養生) studies has been increased with the great interest in quality of life. Taoism and Traditional Korean Medicine were closely related with Yangseng(養生). Most of the Yangseng(養生) Studies in Medicine have been carried out by Traditional Korean Medicine and primarily focused in the literature. Yangseng(養生) has been defined as a sort of health-promoting behaviors. Therefore, Yangseng(養生) studies that mainly analyzed the variables associated with health-related quality of life and Yangseng(養生) and the main subjects were elderly and workers in this study. But every measuring instrument except Yangseng(養生) was adapted from western tools. In order to handle the new wave of society and medicine, new health concept and measuring instrument of Traditional Korean Medicine should be developed through Korean unique ideas of Yangseng(養生).

Pruritus is the most prominent symptom of atopic dermatitis and other skin diseases. It is not easily improved and is a major factor that threatens the quality of life of patients and their families. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of HyungGae-Water, which was bath preparation made from Korean medicine herbs, for children and adolescents suffering pruritus. The participants were 50 boys and girls aged from 2 to 15 years old. The HyungGae-Water was used once a day for 6 weeks, and we were followed up three times every two weeks. Of 50 participants enrolled, 47 completed the study. The outcome variables were dermatology quality of life scales in children, pruritus VAS, and investigator global assessment (IGA). The results of the study show that the dermatology quality of life is significantly improved and the VAS of pruritus has meaningful changes. In the IGA, moderate or severe improvement was observed in 48.9% and slight improvement in 17%. There were seven suspected or less relevant adverse events using HyungGae-Water. The present results suggest that the HyungGae-Water has alleviating effect for the pruritus in children and adolescents.

Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is a life-threatening disorder caused by rapidly increasing intra-abdominal pressure. ACS can result in multiorgan failure and carries a mortality of 60~70%. The treatment of choice in ACS is surgical decompression. There are very few reports of ACS and experience in Korea. We report 12-year-old male patient who developed an abdominal compartment syndrome due to traffic-accident-induced retroperitoneal hematomas, Which was successfully treated by performing a bedside emergency surgical decompression with open linea alba fasciotomy with intact peritoneum. When patients do not respond to medical therapy, a decompressive laparotomy is the last surgical resort. In patients with severe abdominal compartment syndrome, the use of a linea alba fasciotomy is an effective intervention to lower intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) without the morbidity of a laparotomy. Use of a linea alba fasciotomy as a first-line intervention before committing to full abdominal decompression in patients with abdominal compartment syndrome improves physiological variables without mortality. Consideration for a linea alba fasciotomy as a bridge before full abdominal decompression needs further evaluation in patients with polytrauma abdominal compartment syndrome.
