AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an important cellular fuel sensor. Its activation requires phosphorylation at Thr-172, which resides in the activation loop of the ${\alpha}1$ and ${\alpha}2$ subunits. Several AMPK upstream kinases are capable of phosphorylating AMPK at Thr-172, including LKB1 and CaMKK${\beta}$ ($Ca^{2+}$/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase${\beta}$). AMPK has been implicated in the regulation of physiological signals, such as in the inhibition of cholesterol fatty acid, and protein synthesis, and enhancement of glucose uptake and blood flow. AMPK activation also exhibits several salutary effects on the vascular function and improves vascular abnormalities. AMPK is modulated by numerous hormones and cytokines that regulate the energy balance in the whole body. These hormone and cytokines include leptin, adiponectin, ghrelin, and even thyroid hormones. Moreover, AMPK is activated by several drugs and xenobiotics. Some of these are in being clinically used to treat type 2 diabetes (e.g., metformin and thiazolidinediones), hypertension (e.g., nifedipine and losartan), and impaired blood flow (e.g., aspirin, statins, and cilostazol). I reviewed the precise mechanisms of the AMPK activation pathway and AMPK-modulating drugs.

GPCRs are large families of cell surface receptors that transmit signals through conformational changes upon ligand activation and an interaction with the heterotrimeric G-proteins. GPCRs regulate the cell-signaling pathways and participate in the regulation of physiological processes through the G-proteins defined by their ${\alpha}$ subunits. A family of 20 G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that provide a large class of tractable drug targets for new anti-inflammatory drugs and, in certain instances, for the treatment of the inflammatory indications such as atherosclerosis, rhinitis, asthma, pulmonary disease and arthritis. In view of the important findings showing that $G{\alpha}_{12}/G{\alpha}_{13}$ regulate the various cellular processes such as actin-stress fiber formation, neurite retraction, platelet aggregation, gene induction, and apoptosis, we became interested in whether, after coupling to the activated GPCRs, the G-proteins and their downstream molecules might be involved in the pathologic processes of chronic inflammatory diseases (e.g., liver fibrosis). In this symposium, the possible link of the G-proteins with the pathophysiology will be discussed with the aim of finding potential new drug targets.

The International Affective Picture System (IAPS) developed by Lang and colleagues[1] is a world-widely adopted tool in studices relating a variety of physiological indices to subjective emotions induced by the presentation of standardized pictures of which subjective ratings are well established in the three dimensions of pleasure, arousal and dominance. In the present stuey we investigated whether distinctive EEG characteristics for six discrete emotions can be discernible using 12 IAPS pictures that scored highest subjective ratings for one of the 6 categorical emotions, i. e., happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and surprise (Two slides for each emotion). These pictures as visual stimuli were randomly given to 38 right-handed college students (20-26 years old) with 30 sec of exposure time and 30sec of inter-stimulus interval for each picture while EEG signals were recorded from F3, F4, O1, and O2 referenced to linked ears. The FFT technoque were used to analyze the acquired EEG data. There were significant differences in RP value changes of EEG bands, most prominent in theta, between positive positive and negative emotions, and partial also among negative emotions. This result is in agreement with previous studies[2, 3]. However, it requires further studied to decided whether IAPS could be a useful tool for catigorical approaches to emotion in addition to its traditional uwe, namely dimensional to emotion.

The process of embryo implantation requires physical contact and physiological communication between the conceptus trophectoderm and the maternal uterine endometrium. During the peri-implantation period in pigs, the conceptus undergoes significant morphological changes and secretes estrogens, the signal for maternal recognition of pregnancy. Estrogens secreted from the conceptus act on uterine epithelia to redirect $PGF_2{\alpha}$, luteolysin, secretion from the uterine vasculature to the uterine lumen to prevent luteolysis as well as to induce expression of endometrial genes that support implantation and conceptus development. In addition, conceptuses secrete cytokines, interferons, growth factors, and proteases, and in response to these signals, the uterine endometrium produces hormones, protease inhibitors, growth factors, transport proteins, adhesion molecules, lipid molecules, and calcium regulatory molecules. Coordinated interactions of these factors derived from the conceptus and the uterus play important roles in the process of implantation in pigs. To better understand mechanism of implantation process in pigs, this review provides information on signaling molecules at the conceptus-uterine interface during early pregnancy, including recently reported data reported.
Blood pressure may be measured using physiological signals, such as ECG, PTT, and $SpO_2$. In this study, we designed and implemented a portable real-time blood pressure measuring system, which can access the Internet simultaneously using the IPv4 / IPv6 protocol. In addition, we presented a model for the calculation of systolic and diastolic blood pressure in a real-time environment. Through clinical experiments on 28 subjects, the blood pressure measuring system was shown to satisfy the requirements of Grade B level of the BHS (British Hypertension Society) certification.
Heterotrimeric G proteins (G proteins) are conserved in all eukaryotes and are crucial components sensing and relaying external cues into the cells to elicit appropriate physiological and biochemical responses. Basic units of the heterotrimeric G protein signaling system include a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), a G protein composed of ${\alpha},\;{\beta},\;and\;{\gamma}$ subunits, and variety of effectors. Sequential sensitization and activation of these G protein elements translates external signals into gene expression changes, resulting in appropriate cellular behaviors. Regulators of G protein signaling (RGSs) constitute a crucial element of appropriate control of the intensity and duration of G protein signaling. For the past decade, G protein signaling and its regulation have been intensively studied in a number of model and/or pathogenic fungi and outcomes of the studies provided better understanding on the upstream regulation of vegetative growth, mating, development, virulence/pathogenicity establishment, and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in fungi. This review focuses on the characteristics of the basic upstream G protein components and RGS proteins, and their roles controlling various aspects of biological processes in the model filamentous ascomycete fungus Aspergillus nidulans. In particular, their functions in controlling hyphal proliferation, asexual spore formation, sexual fruiting, and the mycotoxin sterigmatocystin production are discussed.

The study was to evaluate the air-conditioning of sleep algorithm. The algorithm was developed through the analysis of brain waves and MST, the experiments using air conditioner was performed in a apartment bedroom. Five female subjects were participated for the experiment. Eight hours of data collection a day was performed under different algorithm, case A, case B and case C. Physiological signals, EEG, ECG, EOG, and EMG, were obtained using polygraph and converted into digital signal. Then, subjects were asked to answer the questionnaire about their thermal sensation after experiment in bedroom. Sleep stages were classified, then TST, Sleep latency and Sleep efficiency were calculated for the three different air conditioner algorithm. As results, TST, Sleep efficiency, questionnaire showed the higher values for Case B algorism than that for other algorism. On the other hand, SWS latency was lower than for other conditions. Therefore, it was concluded that Case B of the algorithm was the best for comfortable and deep sleep.

This study was performed In evaluate sleep efficiencies and conditions for comfortable sleep based on the analysis of Physiological signals under variations in thermal conditions. Five female subjects who have similar life cycle and sleep patterns were participated for the sleep experiment. It was checked whether they had a good sleep before the night of experiment. EEGs were obtained from C3-A2 and C4-A1 electrode sites and EOGs were acquired from LOC (left outer canthus) and ROC (right outer canthus) for REM sleep detection. Sleep stages were classified, then TST (total sleep time), SWS (slow wave sleep) latency and SWS/TST were calculated for the evaluation of sleep efficiencies on thermal conditions. TST was defined as an amount of time from sleep stage 1 to wakeup. SWS latency was from light off time to sleep stage 3 and percentage of SWS over TST was calculated for the evaluation of sleep quality and comfort sleep under thermal conditions. As result, the condition which raise a room temperature provided comfortable sleep.
In this study, changes in memory performance, blood oxygen saturation and heart rate according to 30% concentration oxygen supply were observed. Ten healthy male and female college students (male:$25.8{\pm}0.8$ years, female: $24.2{\pm}1.9$ years) participated in the study. The experiment was performed as Rest (1min.), Control task (1min.), Word presentation (1min.), Reaction time task (1min.), Distractor (2min.), and Word recall (1min.) and the physiological signals such as blood oxygen saturation and heart rate were measured throughout the stages. Subjects who received 30% oxygen recalled more words than those who received 21% oxygen, which shows 30% oxygen supply has influenced positively on memory cognitive performance. When 30% concentration oxygen is supplied, the blood oxygen saturation in the task phases was increased and the heart rate decreased when comparing to 21%. It means that 30% oxygen can stimulate brain activation by increasing actual blood oxygen concentration in the process of cognitive performance, and the heart rate decreases because enough oxygen is supplied to process the cognitive performance.
This study was peformed to characterize the physiological signal prior to develop an algorithm which quantifies EEGs evoked by tactile stimulation. The experiment was devised with four experimental conditions, which were control and two levels of pressures in tactile sensation. Twenty subjects were used to obtain EEGs while applying tactile stimulation using two types of textiles, soft towel and sand paper, to the right hand of each subject. EEGs were acquired for 20 seconds, and each trial was repeated five times randomly at the different levels of stimulus intensities. The index, $S_{n}$, was obtained by calculating the ratio of energy distribution in the time-frequency plot for each scored psychological state of the subject. The results showed that dominant aspects of the EEG signals have their maximal frequencies concentrated at a lower ranges for the resting and pleasant state, while the spectral energies were distributed to higher frequency ranges when subjects experience an unpleasant emotion.
