This study was conducted to investigate the influence of dietary oriental medicine refuse(OMR) and mugwort powder on physico-chemical characteristics of Korean Native Pork(KNP). KNP were randomly assigned to one of the three dietary treatments : 1) control (commercial feed) 2) T1 (commercial fed supplemented with 10% OMR powder) 3) T2 (commercial feed with 10% mugwort powder). 15 heads(♂) were feed one of the experimental diets for 5 months and slaughtered. In the proximate composition, moisture content showed slightly high in the T1, however, fat content were tended to be high in the control. The heating loss, shear value, WHC (water holding capacity) were not significantly between control and the treatments group. The T1 showed the lowest pH among treatments (P<0.05). In sensory evaluation, juiciness and tenderness of T1 and T2 were higher compared with that of control. Hunter a* did not show any difference among the treatments group. But Hunter L*, b* in treatment group(T1, T2) were higher than that of the control. Oleic acid, linoleic acid and unsaturated fatty acid contents of T1 and T2 were higher than the control. The total amino acid of the control, T1 and T2 were 18.290, 18.177 and 18.942mg%, respectively.
Recently, many attempts have been made to use hydrogels of various polymers as delivery systems of various drugs and bioactive materials to prolong and control their phamacological activities. In this study, we have evaluated the physico-chemical properties of methacrylic acid-methyacrylic acid methyl ester copolymer 9Eudispert mv)m a acrylic resin hydorgel, and its application to transdermal delivery system. In the dissolution tests, the release rate of salicylic acid (SA) and sodium salicylate (SOd. SA) were faster than lidocain (LD) and lidocain-HCl(LD-HCl). As the concentration of Eudispert mv polymer increased, the extensibility of Eudispert mu hydrogel decreased, whereas the swelling ratio increased. The more NaOH and polymer concentration increased, the more osmotic pressure linearly increased. The skin permeation of Sod. SA, an acidic model drug, was remarkably enhanced by Eudispert mv hydrogel. All fatty acids, except for Sod. glycolate, dramatically increased the skin permeation flux in Eudispert mu hydrogel containing LD-Hcl, a basic model drug. Consequently, it is suggested that Eudispert mv hydrogel may be used as potential transdermal delivery vehicle.
Investigation was carried out to assess the effect of cement dust deposition on the physico-chemical properties of soil near some cement plants in Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. Soil samples were collected and analysed and compared with the control site. Comparison of various soil physico-chemical parameters revealed that cement dust emanating from cement plants has changed the soil quality in the surrounding areas of cement plants. The normal soil pH in the area is generally acidic. However, due to the continuous deposition of cement dust soil pH was found slightly alkaline near the cement plants. The higher values of soil parameters such as electrical conductivity and bulk density were also noticed near the cement plants. However, lower values of water holding capacity, soil moisture content, soil organic carbon and total nitrogen content were found compared to the control sites. The effect of cement dust deposition on soil is more in areas nearer to the cement plants. At present the changes may not be so serious but if this trend continues, soil properties of a vast area around the cement plants are likely to change leading to multiple effects on flora, fauna and socio-economy of the area.
Purpose: This study analyzed and compared the physico-chemical and affective properties between mackerels cooked by an electric pan and under superheated steam. Methods: Mackerel were cooked by an electric pan ($95^{\circ}C$) for 10 min and mackerel cooked under superheated steam ($250^{\circ}C$) for 5 min to be internal temperatures of $75{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ and tests to measure proximate composition, color values, texture profiles, microorganism counts and sensory acceptance were performed. Results: The moisture contents were 60.30% and 73.81% in mackerels cooked by electric pan and under superheated steam, respectively. The rate of weight loss in mackerel cooked by electric pan was 39%, whereas it was 29% in mackerel cooked under superheated steam. Mackerel cooked under superheated steam exhibited more yellowness, higher springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, chewiness, and resilience with more acceptable preferences (appearance, odor, taste, and texture) compared to the mackerel cooked by electric pan. Conclusion: The application of superheated steam technology to fish products could reduce the cooking time and nutritional loss. Also, it could produce highly preferred fish products compared to that prepared by conventional electric pan.
To develop mil fat fractions with desirable physico-chemical properties, anhydrous milk fat (AMF) was fractionated by one- and two-stage extractions using supercritical $CO_2$(SC-$CO_2$). Tow-stage extraction of AMF was performed by first producing tow fractions, an extract and a residue at 4$0^{\circ}C$/241bar, which were subsequently used as the feed for an extraction at 6$0^{\circ}C$/241bar and 4$0^{\circ}C$/345bar, and separated into five and four fractions, respectively, based one extraction time. These fractions were quantified and analyzed for fatty acids and physico-chemical properties. SHort-chain (C4~C8) fatty acids in extract fractions from an extract were 200~150% compared with those of the original AF. Long-chain (C14~C18) fatty acids in extract fractions from a residue were 118~141%. The ratio of unsaturated fatty acids in the residue fraction was 131%. Melting point ranged from 22 to 43$^{\circ}C$, iodine value 21.8 to 36.9, and saponification value 255 to 221 in the extract and residue fractions. SC-$CO_2$ fractionation of AMF by two-stage extraction offers the possibility of developing ractions with discrete fatty acid compositions and physico-chemical properties such as melting point, iodine value and saponification value.
One-dimensional soil-column studies were carried out to understand the interaction of three industrial effluents namely amino acid ('highly acidic'), surfactant ('highly organic') and pharmaceutical ('organic and toxic') on the physicochemical behavior, index properties and shear strength of bentonite due to artificial contamination extending to nearly 300 days. Changes in inorganic and organic pollutants present in the effluents due to the interaction of the above effluents and soil were assessed to understand the physico-chemical behaviour. Batch and continuous modes of operation, 8 hrs and 16 hrs Hydraulic Retention Time [HRT] and 25%, 50% concentrations of effluents, were the parameters considered. Amino acid, surfactant and pharmaceutical effluents have shown a high variation in pH (7 to 8) after artificial contamination on bentonite that is their original characteristics of the above effluents have been completely reversed. Further, it is found that the shear strength of bentonite has reduced by about 20%, and with respect to liquid limit and plastic limit shows an increasing trend with time within the period of contamination.
The nickel oxide, the most widely used cathode material for the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), has several disadvantages including NiO dissolution, poor mechanical strength, and corrosion phenomena during MCFC operation. The surface modification of NiO with lanthanum maintains the advantages, such as performance and stability, and suppresses the disadvantages of NiO cathode because the modification results in the formation of $LaNiO_3$ phase which has high conductivity, stability, and catalytic activity. As a result, La-modified NiO cathode shows low NiO dissolution, high degree of lithiation, and mechanical strength, and high cell performance and catalytic activity in comparison with the pristine NiO. These enhanced physico-chemical and electrochemical properties and the durability in marine environment allow MCFC to marine application as a auxiliary propulsion system.

Small-scale fish farmers in developing countries are faced with challenges owing to their limited information on aquaculture management. Nile tilapia farmers in Teso North Sub-County recorded lower yields than expected in 2009 despite having been provided with required inputs. Water quality was suspected to be the key factor responsible for the low yields. This study sought to assess the effects of earthen pond water physico-chemical parameters on the growth of Nile tilapia in six earthen fish ponds under semi-intensive culture system in Teso North Sub-County. The study was longitudinal in nature with pond water and fish being the units of analysis. Systematic sampling was used to select five ponds while a control pond was purposively selected based on its previously high harvest. Four ponds were fed by surface flow and two by underground water. Each pond was fertilized and stocked with 900 fry of averagely 1.4 g and 4.4 cm. Physico-chemical parameters were measured in-situ using a multi-parameter probe. Sixty fish samples were randomly obtained from each pond fortnightly for four months using a 10 mm mesh size and measured, weighed and returned into the pond. Mean range of physico-chemical parameters were: dissolved oxygen (DO) 4.86-10.53 mg/l, temperature $24-26^{\circ}C$, pH 6.1-8.3, conductivity $35-87{\mu}S/cm$ and ammonia 0.01-0.3 mg/l. Temperature (p = 0.012) and conductivity (p = 0.0001) levels varied significantly between ponds. Overall Specific Growth Rate ranged between 1.8% (0.1692 g/day) and 3.8% (1.9 g/day). Ammonia, DO and pH in the ponds were within the optimal levels for growth of tilapia, while temperature and conductivity were below optimal levels. As temperature and DO increased, growth rate of tilapia increased. However, increase in conductivity, pH and ammonia decreased fish growth rate. Temperature and DO ranging between 27 and $30^{\circ}C$ and 5-23 mg/l, respectively, and SGR of 3.8%/day and above are recommended for higher productivity.

The authentication of the physico-chemical properties of ginsenosides reference materials as well as qualitative and quantitative batch analytical data based on validated analytical procedures is a prerequisite for certifying good manufacturing practice (GMP). Ginsenoside Rb1 and Rg1, representing protopanaxadiol and protopanaxatriol ginsenosides, respectively, are accepted as marker substances in quality control standards worldwide. However, the current analytical methods for these two compounds recommended by Korean, Chinese, European, and Japanese pharmacopoeia do not apply to red ginseng preparations, particularly the extract, because of the relatively low content of the two agents in red ginseng compared to white ginseng. In manufacturing fresh ginseng into red ginseng products, ginseng roots are exposed to a high temperature for many hours, and the naturally occurring ginsenoside Rb1 and Rg1 are converted to artifact ginsenosides such as Rg3, Rg5, Rh1, and Rh2 during the heating process. The analysis of ginsenosides in commercially available ginseng products in Korea led us to propose the inclusion of the (20S)- and (20R)-ginsenoside Rg3, including ginsenoside Rb1 and Rg1, as additional reference materials for ginseng preparations. (20S)- and (20R)-ginsenoside Rg3 were isolated by Diaion HP-20 adsorption chromatography, silica gel flash chromatography, recrystallization, and preparative HPLC. HPLC fractions corresponding to those two ginsenosides were recrystallized in appropriate solvents for the analysis of physico-chemical properties. Documentation of those isolated ginsenosides was achieved according to the method proposed by Gaedcke and Steinhoff. The ginsenosides were subjected to analyses of their general characteristics, identification, purity, content quantification, and mass balance tests. The isolated ginsenosides showed 100% purity when determined by the three HPLC systems. Also, the water content was found to be 0.534% for (20S)-Rg3 and 0.920% for (20R)-Rg3, meaning that the net mass balances for (20S)-Rg3 and (20R)-Rg3 were 99.466% and 99.080%, respectively. From these results, we could assess and propose a full spectrum of physico-chemical properties of (20S)- and (20R)-ginsenoside Rg3 as standard reference materials for GMP-based quality control.
A total of 120 pigs (Berkshire) were used to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with artificial culture medium of wild ginseng (CWG) on the physico-chemical characteristics of pork About $60{\pm}3kg$ pigs were randomly assigned to 4 pens based on sex and diet (C: commercial diet feed or T: commercial diet+1 L CWG per day for 70 days). Pigs were slaughtered at approximately 110 kg live weight, and proximate composition and physico-chemical characteristics were measured in pork loin. The moisture content, hardness and chewiness of pork were higher in gilt fed CWG than in gilt fed the control diet, but the water-holding capacity of pork and $L^*$ values of fat color were lower. The shear force and $a^*$ values of pork were higher in barrow fed CWG than in harrow fed the control diet. The crude fat content, hardness, cohesiveness, chewiness of pork and $a^*\;and\;b^*$ values of fat color were lower in barrow than in gilt, but the pH was higher. These results imply that the proximate composition and physico-chemical characteristics of pork could be affected by dietary supplementation with CWG and the sex of the pig, while the texture properties and at values of pork may be improved with dietary CWG.
