  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate physical activity of elderly women at senior citizen centers and to identify factors influencing physical activity. Methods: The study was conducted from February 22 to April 20, 2013 for 200 elderly women at senior citizen centers in J City. Levels of physical activity, cognitive function, and nutritional status were measured. Results: The total physical activity amount was $2118.94{\pm}2.36$ MET-min. The average cognitive function score was $21.17{\pm}4.63$, and the average nutritional status score was $24.04{\pm}3.37$. There were significant relationships among physical activity, cognitive function, and nutritional status. In addition, there were significant differences of groups of physical activity by levels of cognitive function and nutritional status. Cognitive function, nutritional status, and age were significantly associated with level of physical activity in elderly women. Conclusion: The results showed many older women were doing moderate physical activity. Physical activity was associated with cognitive function and nutritive conditions. Integrated health promotion program needs to be implemented to increase physical activity level, the cognitive function, and nutritive conditions in elderly women.

  • This study examined the physical activity and dietary patterns of university students in Nairobi County and compared to their weight status. The study was a cross-sectional analytical design with a sample of 260 undergraduate students randomly selected from two private and two public universities. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to gather information from students. Students weight and height measurements were also obtained. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 22. The study results showed that 53.5% of the students met the recommended levels of moderate physical activity and 18.8% of the students met the recommended levels of vigorous physical activity. Majority of the students consumed fast foods sweetened beverages and pastries most times in a week. The study also showed that 31.2% of the students were overweight and 6.2% were obese. The study reveals that most students did not achieve the recommended levels of vigorous physical activity and showed some poor dietary patterns. Findings show clear evidence of high prevalence of overweight among university students but focus should be on fitness rather than fatness. Efforts should be made to promote physical activity participation and good dietary practices within university environments.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to find the correlations between physical activity and insulin resistance of the middle-aged adults. Methods: One hundred thirty one subjects participated in this study were age 40-60 from Y university's center for physical exercise in W city. The data were collected from August 5 to October 5, 2009. To measure physical activity, the contracted Korean version of the Self-Report of Physical Activity Questionnaires of IPAQ was used. Insulin resistance was measured using fasting glucose levels, serum insulin levels, and HOMA method (serum insulin${\times}$fasting glucose/22.5). Results: The continuous physical activity overall in this study was on average $1,792.30{\pm}2,216.81$ MET (min/week), and as a result of categorical classification: no activity was 66 subjects (50.4%); minimum activity, 41 (31.3%); and health-improving activity, 24 (18.3%), respectively. The overall degree of insulin resistance in these subjects was $2.20{\pm}2.62$(0.28-12.74). There was negative correlation between moderate intensity activity and insulin resistance (r= -.189, p<.05). Conclusion: These results revealed that promoting moderate-intensity physical activity is important in preventing and improving insulin resistance and possibly other metabolic risk factors in the middle-aged adults.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between health status and physical activity levels in older adults (over 65 years) in Korea. Methods: The participants were selected from the database of the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VII), conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2017. A chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze data. Results: The findings showed that health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes were related to physical activity levels of the older adults. In addition to health status, social and economic factors such as gender, age, and geographic region should be considered in order to initiate the practice of aerobic and strength exercise in the older adults. Conclusions: To initiate physical activity levels in the older adults, it is necessary to consider support for costs involved, policies required for the development of integrated exercise programs, expansion of public exercise facilities, and improved facilities.

  • This paper examines the effects on mental fatigue of changes in the intensity of physical activity. A treadmill-equipped instrument and perception tester were used to attain several levels of physical activity In this paper, In order to determine the individual levels of physical activity of subjects, Borg-RPE scale, Heart Rate(HR) and Respiratory Quotient(RQ) were used. Also, an addition test in whole-body activity on treadmill-equipped instrument as an indicator of mental fatigue were performed. In the above experiments, the scores obtained in addition test administered before and after physical activity at each intensity level used. Restricted within the limits of this paper, the results of these tests showed that mental fatigue decreased after physical activity.

  • Purpose: Regular physical activity is beneficial in reducing disease activity and morbidity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The purposes of this study were to examine the levels of regular physical activity and learned helplessness and to identify factors influencing in participation in regular physical activity in RA patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 210 RA patients in a university-affiliated hospital. Participants completed a questionnaire including demographic and disease-related characteristics, physical activity and learned helplessness. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, $x^2$ tests, t-tests, and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: About 23% of RA patients engaged in at least 30 minutes of regular physical activity per week. Patients with being older (OR=1.09, 95%CI=1.03~1.14), no employment status (OR=0.17, 95% CI=0.07~0.42), and lower levels of learned helplessness (OR=0.58, 95% CI=0.34~0.96) had significantly higher chance of engaging in regular physical activity. Conclusion: In developing nursing interventions to promote regular physical activity in RA patients, their learned helplessness should be considered.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to explore the levels of physical activity and fatigue among nurses and to identify the relationship between these variables. Methods: Participants were 89 nurses working at an intensive care unit and an operating room in a children's hospital. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires including the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and Brief Fatigue Inventory. Results: Most of the nurses' physical activity was work related, and there was a significant difference according to the working unit. Nurses with higher work stress and lower job satisfaction showed higher levels of fatigue than their counterparts did. Work-related physical activity and the interference of fatigue with relationships were related positively, whereas transport and leisure time physical activity were negatively related to usual fatigue and the interference of fatigue with life enjoyment. Conclusion: The levels of physical activity and fatigue of nurses were higher than those observed among other populations. The appropriate level of physical activity for these nurses needs to be investigated carefully. Also, in the intervention for nurses' fatigue, their level of work-related and leisure-time physical activity should be considered separately, and their work environment and psychological satisfaction level should be included.

  • Objectives: This study performed to verify Korea National Health and Examination Survey(KNHAES) to monitor recommended physical activity(PA) and to propose an monitoring tools for evidence-based PA projects. Methods: The characteristics of the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire(GPAQ) and its reliability and validity were overviewed based on the current scientific evidence in the field of PA. Relevant articles were identified through multiple sources including PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, CINAHL, ASP, RISS4U, and KISS. Results: The GPAQ has strong points over the Short Form of International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ-SF) as a monitoring tool to meet recommended PA levels for three domains separately and reflecting a better understanding about walking. Its reliability and validity also were reported as acceptable in existing studies overall. Some limitations of this questionnaire, however, need to be addressed to improve its quality. Conclusions: For monitoring of evidenced-based physical activity projects, we considered that it is able to be provided an opportunity for in-depth discussion among academic experts and policy-makers about the necessity of complements for KNHAES and applying new tools, and it could be the basis for development of physical activity monitoring tool in the future.
