Hydrophobic Polydimethylsiloxane Thin Films Prepared by Chemical Vapor Deposition: Application in Water Purification (화학적 증기 증착 방법을 통해 제조한 소수성 폴리디메틸실록산 박막: 수처리로의 응용)

  • Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) can be deposited on various substrates using chemical vapor deposition process, which results in the formation of PDMS thin films with thickness below 5 nm. PDMS layers can be evenly deposited on surfaces of nanoparticles composed of various chemical compositions such as $SiO_2$, $TiO_2$, ZnO, C, Ni, and NiO, and the PDMS-coated surface becomes completely hydrophobic. These hydrophobic layers are highly resistant towards degradation under acidic and basic environments and UV-exposures. Nanoparticles coated with PDMS can be used in various environmental applications: hydrophobic silica nanoparticles can selectively interact with oil from oil/water mixture, suppressing fast diffusion of spill-oil on water and allowing more facile physical separation of spill-oil from the water. Upon heat-treatments of PDMS-coated $TiO_2$ under vacuum conditions, $TiO_2$ surface becomes completely hydrophilic, accompanying formation oxygen vacancies responsible for visible-light absorption. The post-annealed $PDMS-TiO_2$ shows enhanced photocatalytic activity with respect to the bare $TiO_2$ for decomposition of organic dyes in water under visible light illumination. We show that the simple PDMS-coating process presented here can be useful in a variety of field of environmental science and technology.

Electrochemical Studies on the Corrosion Performance of Steel Embeded in Activated Fly Ash Blended Concrete (활성화된 플라이애쉬 혼입콘크리트의 철근부식거동에 관한 전기화학적 연구)

  • The use of fly ash to replace a portion of cement has resulted significant savings in the cost of cement production. Fly ash blended cement concretes require a longer curing time and their early strength is low when compared to ordinary Portland cement(OPC) concrete. By adopting various activation techniques such as physical, thermal and chemical method, hydration of fly ash blended cement concrete was accelerated and thereby improved the corrosion-resistance of concrete. Concrete specimens prepared with 10-40% of activated fly ash replacement were evaluated for their open circuit potential measurements, weight loss measurements, impedance measurements, linear polarization measurements, water absorption test, rapid chloride ion penetration test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test and the results were compared with those for OPC concrete without fly ash. All the studies confirmed that up to a critical level of 20-30% replacement; activated fly ash cement improved the corrosion-resistance properties of concrete. It was also confirmed that the chemical activation of fly ash better results than the other methods of activation investigated in this study.

A Study on the Durability Improvement by Controlling the Deterioration of Underground Concrete Structures (지하 콘크리트구조물의 열화 억제에 의한 내구성 증진에 관한 연구)

  • Normally, coating is used for protecting reinforced concrete. For this purpose, both organic and inorganic coatings are used. The advantages of inorganic coatings are lower absorption of UV, non-burning etc. On the other hand, organic coatings have the advantage of low permeability of $CO_2, SO_2$ and water. Organic coatings provide better protection for reinforced concrete. However, organic coatings such as epoxy, urethane and acryl reduce long-term adhesive strength by the difference of their thermal expansion coefficients and elastic modules from those of concrete, and the formed coating cover of these is blistered by poor breathing. Also, when organic coatings are applied to the wet surface of concrete, they have a problem with adhesion. In this study, a new coating material for protecting concrete was hybridized with polymer and ceramics. And tests were carried out on its physical and durable characteristics, and safety characteristic on elution. All results were compared with organic coating materials and epoxies and showed that the performance of the developed coating material was not inferior to that of other organic coatings in protecting concrete. On the other hand, safety characteristic on elution was superior to epoxies which were used in this study. So, the developed coating material was considered as a suitable protecting coating material which have advantages of inorganic and organic coatings for protecting underground concrete structures, especially in contact with water.

Analysis of Material Characteristics for Blackwares at Excavated from the Bonggok Kiln Site of Jinan-gun (진안 봉곡도요지 출토 흑유자기의 재료학적 특성 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the material characteristics of blackwares excavated from the Bonggok kiln site in Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do Province, South Korea, by scientific analyses and a reproduction experiment. Scientific analyses were conducted to determine the physical properties, chemical composition and for microscopic observation of blackwares. A reproduction experiment was also conducted by producing ceramic samples with black glaze, red ocher and limestone, and then cross sections of the samples were observed. The analysis results showed that all the excavated blackwares have similar properties such as chromaticity, specific gravity, absorption factor and porosity, but there is a difference depending on the crystallization of the ceramics. Thermal analysis showed that the exothermic peak was observed at about $1200^{\circ}C$, and crystal structure analysis indicated the presence of mullite. Hence, it can be concluded that the firing temperature of the excavated blackwares was around $1100-1200^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the glaze present on these blackwares has about 22% higher $Fe_2O_3$ content than those excavated from other places; however, the former has lower CaO content. For the reproduction experiment, samples were made using limestone as a flux and red ocher as a glaze. The results show that the cross section of the glaze layer of the reproduced sample have iron crystals with dendritic structures, similar to those present in the excavated black-wares. It is assumed that such iron crystals were formed during the process of melting and solidification of the iron oxide present in the blackwares.

Slope Stability Analysis of Improved Wasted Mine Tailing Landfill Using Fine Recycled-Concrete Aggregates (폐콘크리트 재생잔골재를 활용한 개량 폐광미 매립지의 사면안정해석)

  • An extensive numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the slope stability of the wasted mine tailing landfill constructed by the utilization of fine recycled-concrete aggregates. To do this, first, the physical and mechanical properties of the fine recycled-concrete aggregates and the wasted mine tailing are investigated, and the settlement and the change of material properly of the fine recycled-concrete aggregates resulted from reaction with water are also examined. The $OH^-$ elution from the fine recycled-concrete aggregates reacted with water slightly causes the change of material properties such as porosity, permeability and waster absorption, but the settlement does not happen noticeably. The results of numerical analysis of the landfill slope built with wasted mine tailing and recycled-concrete aggregates in alternate layer indicate that slope stability increases with decreasing the slope ratio, with decreasing the groundwater level inside slope, and with increasing the depth of fine recycled-concrete aggregate layer. Based on this study, thus, engineers working in related to the wasted mine tailing landfill design and construction using the fine recycled-concrete aggregates should be considered the slope ratio, the groundwater level, the depth of fine recycled-concrete aggregate layer.

The Strength and Length Change Properties of Recycled Aggregate Concrete(RAC) by Compressive Strength Levels (압축강도 수준별 순환골재 콘크리트의 강도와 길이변화 특성)

  • This paper addresses mechanical properties and length change performance of the recycled aggregate concretes(RAC) in which natural coarse was replaced by recycled coarse aggregate(RCA) by compressive strength levels(20, 35, 50 MPa). A total of 9 RAC were produced and classified into three series, each of which included three mixes designed with three compressive strength levels of 20 MPa, 35 MPa and 50 MPa and three RCA replacement ratios of 0, 50 and 100%. Physical/Mechanical properties of RAC were tested for slump test, compressive strength, and length change. The test results indicated that the workability of RC could be improved or same by RCA replacement ratios, when compared with that containing no RCA. This is probably because of the RCA shape improving the workability of RAC. Also, the test results showed that the compressive strength was decreased by 9~10% as the RCA replacement ratios increase. However, the length change ratio by the RCA replacement ratios increased regardless of compressive strength levels. At 20 MPa level, the length change ratio was 8~40% which was much higher than that of 4~17% at both 35 and 50 MPa levels. Therefore, it was considered that such admixture addition preventing dry shrinkage is required in order to improve the properties of the RAC at 20 MPa level.

Design and SAR Analysis of Broadband Monopole Antenna Using Loop and T-Shaped Patches (사각 루프와 T자형 패치를 결합한 광대역 평면형 모노폴 안테나 설계 및 SAR 분석)

  • In this paper, a broadband planar monopole antenna for multi-band services is proposed. The physical size of the proposed antenna is miniaturized by folding a rectangular loop. And a resonance point in the 3.9 GHz band is reduced by a coupling phenomenon with the central part of the T-shaped patch and the folded rectangular loop. In addition, the T-shaped patch is inserted to the rectangular shaped monopole antenna due to deriving the broadband frequency characteristics. The frequency characteristic is optimized by adjusting the gap and length of the folded rectangular loops and a transverse diameter of the T-shaped patch. The antenna dimensions including the ground plane are $40{\times}60{\times}1.6mm^3$. It is fabricated on the FR-4 substrate(${\epsilon}_r$=4.4) using a microstrip line of $50{\Omega}$ for impedance matching. In the measured result, the bandwidth corresponding to the VSWR of 2:1 is 162 MHz(815~977 MHz) and 2,530 MHz(1.43~3.96 GHz). For analyzing the human effect by the proposed antenna, 1 g and 10 g averaged SARs are simulated and measured. As the simulated results, 1 g-averaged SAR is 1.044 W/kg, and 10 g-averaged SAR is 0.718 W/kg. This result are satisfied by the SAR guidelines which are 1.6 W/kg(1 g-averaged) and 2.0 W/kg(10 g-averaged).

The Effect of Additives on the Preparation of Nanosized TiO2 Particles (나노크기 TiO2의 제조에 미치는 첨가제 영향)

  • Nanosized $TiO_2$ particles were prepared from titanium (IV) sulfate solution using base solutions at low reaction temperature ($95^{\circ}C$) and atmospheric pressure by hydrothermal precipitation method without calcination. The effects of preparation conditions, such as kind of base solutions (NaOH, $NH_4OH$, Monoethanolamine, Diethanolamine, Triethanolamine) and surfactants (CTAB, Span 20, SDBS), concentration of surfactants, temperature and pH, on the physical properties of $TiO_2$ particles have been investigated by XRD, SEM and Zeta-potential meter. Absorption area was also investigated by DRS in order to confirm the photocatalytic activity of the nanosized $TiO_2$ particles. It was turned out that, among base solutions, NaOH provides the smallest $TiO_2$ particles with excellent crystallinity. And cationic surfactant (CTAB) prepared smaller $TiO_2$ particles than any other surfactants. When CTAB is added in the concentration ratio of $Ti(SO_4)_2$:CTAB=10:1, $TiO_2$ particles with particle diameter of 5.8 nm were prepared. This is approximately 1/10 of that prepared without CTAB.

Effects of pH and Temperature on the Adsorption of Cationic Dyes from Aqueous Suspension by Maghnia Montmorillonite (수용액으로부터 양이온 염료 흡수에 대한 pH 및 온도 효과)

  • The effects of pH and temperature on the removal of two dyes (neutral red; NR and malachite green oxalates; MG) from aqueous effluents using Maghnia montmorillonite clay in a batch adsorption process were investigated. The results showed the stability of the optical properties of MG in aqueous solution and adsorbed onto clay under wide range of pH 3-9. However, the interaction of NR dye with clay is accompanied by a red shift of the main absorption bands of monomer cations under pH range of 3-5, whereas, those of neutral form remains nearly constant over the pH range of 8-12. The optimal pH for favorable adsorption of the dyes, i.e. ${\geq}$90% has been achieved in aqueous solutions at 6 and 7 for NR and VM respectively. The most suitable adsorption temperatures were 298 and 318 K with maximum adsorption capacities of 465.13mg/g for NR and 459.89 mg/g for MG. The adsorption equilibrium results for both dyes follow Langmuir, Freundlich isotherms. The numerical values of the mean free energy $E_a$ of 4.472-5.559 kj/mol and 2.000-2.886 kj/mol for NR and MG respectively indicated physical adsorption. Various thermodynamic parameters, such as ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ and Ea have been calculated. The data showed that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. The sticking probability model was further used to assess the potential feasibility of the clay mineral as an alternative adsorbent for organic ion pollutants in aqueous solution.

Quality and Sensory Characteristics of White Bread added with Various Ginseng Products (인삼제품의 첨가에 따른 제빵적성 및 관능평가)

  • This study investigated the effect of ginseng products on the baking properties of white breads. Flour was substituted by ginseng products (ginseng at levels 2, 4, 6, and 8%, all w/w, of flour levels). Both ginseng powder (GP) and red ginseng powder (RGP) were used. Similarly, red ginseng extract (RGE) was substituted at levels of 1, 2, 3, and 4% (all w/w) of flour. The physical properties of each dough were assessed using farinograms, extensograms, and amylograms. Water absorption increased as the proportions of ginseng products rose. The dough surface areas and R/E (resistance/extensibility) values decreased, as did peak viscosities, at the proportions of ginseng products increased. The pH values during fermentation decreased as the proportions of ginseng products increased. The fermentation power of dough with GP was lower than that of control, and higher than that of dough with RGP or RGE, but the addition of ginseng products beyond certain levels weakened the gas retention power: The specific loaf volumes of breads with 2% GP were the highest at 5.41 mL/g. In breads with RGE, the specificloaf volume increased from 5.52 mL/g to 5.82 mL/g as RGE levels rose from 0% to 4%. Hardness increased with rising GP and RGP levels in breads with GP and RGP, but decreased with RGE levels in breads with RGE. The moisture contents of breads during storage tended to be higher than control in breads with ginseng products. Lightness increased with addition of GP and decreased upon addition of RGP or RGE, while redness and yellowness increased after addition of any ginseng products. In sensory evaluation tests, the sensory scores for texture, color, mouth feel, and overall acceptability, were high, when any ginseng product (GP, RGP or RGE) was present at 2%. Of these breads, the bread with 2% RGE attained the highest sensory score.
