  • Photovoltaic devices are promising candidates as affordable and large-area renewable energy sources, which can replace the fossil-fuel-based resources. Especially, thin film solar cells have attracted increasing research attention, since they have a great advantage of low production cost. From the physical point of view, the photovoltaic devices can provide us interesting questions, how to enhance the light absorption and the carrier collection efficiency. A lot of approaches would be possible to address these issues. We have focused on two major topics relevant to photovoltaic device physics; (1) light management using surface plasmons and (2) junction characterizations aiming at proper interface engineering. Regarding the first topic, we have investigated the influences of Ag under-layer morphology on optical properties of ZnO thin films. The experimental results suggested that coupling between the surface plasmon polaritons at the ZnO/Ag interface and excitons in ZnO should play important roles in reflectivity of the ZnO/Ag thin films, which are widely used back reflector structures in thin film solar cells. For the second topic, we have carried out scanning probe microscopy studies of Schottky junctions consisting of photovoltaic materials. Such a research is very helpful to understand the correlation between the defects (e.g., grain boundaries) and local electrical properties. We will introduce some of the recent experimental results and discuss the physical significance.

  • First, a purified sludge was calcined at various temperatures viz. 800, 900, 1000, 1100 and $1200^{\circ}C$ per hour. Subsequently 100 wt% of ware from Geryong mountain was mixed with 5~25 wt% of a purified sludge. Then the ware was treated at $1250^{\circ}C$ in an electric kiln to test a bending strength. The physicochemical property of the prepared ware was characterized by XRD, Raman and SEM analysis. Among the different percentage, 25 wt% of a ware in a purified sludge calcined at $1000^{\circ}C$ showed 689 $kg/cm^2$ strength. Also the purified sludge calcined at $1000^{\circ}C$ was adequate physical properties than the other composites. Further to enhance the physical strength, 3 wt% $TiO_2$ (a mineralizer) was added into the ware and the strength was increased up to 731 $kg/cm^2$. The composites exhibit absorption and porosity rates of 0.17% and 0.39% respectively.

  • In this paper, we have investigated the physical, dielectric and electrical conduction properties of polyethylene terephthalate(PET) film due to temperature variation. From FT-IR spectrum as an analysis of physical properties, the strong absorption in wavenumber 1019[$cm^{-1}$], 1266[$cm^{-1}$], and 1752[$cm^{-1}$] observed by the C=O and benzene ring. the characteristics of volume resistivity used to highmegohm meter is measured from 1 to 10 minutes when the specimen applied the voltage according to the step voltage appling method. and dielectric characteristics were measured in the temperature range from room temperature to 120[$^{\circ}C$] due to frequency variation.. also we measured in the voltage rang of 1[V] to 20[V] according to the voltage application method.

  • Physical and chemical properties of glycosylsucrose were characterized as follows: 1. The moisture content of glycosylsucrose syrup (35% , w/w) was 63.6% and total sugar in solid was 35.9%. 2. Main sugar compositions of glycosylsucrose syrup were maltotetraose 54.5%, sucrose 18.0%, glycosylsucrose 15.3%, maltosylsucrose 11.3% and the content of glucose, maltose, maltotriose and fructose were very little. 3. Perceived sweetness threshold of glycosylsucrose was 0.71%, relative sweetness was 0.53, and sweetness intensity expressed as power function was S=$0.78^{\circ}$C^{1.5}$$. 4. Viscosity of glycosylsucrose was higher than that of sucrose and Japanese product at 10, 25, 35 and $65^{\circ}C$. 5. The content of water absorption of gylcosylsucrose at Aw 0.80 was 0.48 g $H_2$O/g dry weight while that of sucrose was 0.17g $H_2$O/g dryweight at Aw 0.86. 6. The stability of glycosylsucrose was decreased by acidic pH, high temperature and long heating time. 7. The glycosylsucrose showed very little browning when heated with pepton, but alkaline pH (pH8), high temperature and long heating time increased browning reaction.

  • Brown rice with a giant embryo (GE) was observed on the quality parameters of the enlargement of embryo, nutritional components, and physical properties, in comparison to normal embryo brown rice (NE). Also, the effects of germination on the quality parameters were examined. GE embryo was approximately 2.68 times larger than of NE rice. Total free sugars were significantly higher in GE rice (71.96 vs. 41.17 mg/100 g), and germinated rice increased in fructose, but decreased in sucrose and maltose. No significant difference in mineral contents was found in GE and NE rice and their germinated rice, whereas a significant increment was observed on reducing sugars and gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) contents in GE rice. The lower water absorption index (WAI) of GE rice resulted in relatively lower pasting viscosity, whereas the increased WSI in germinated rice might be attributable to the significant increment of soluble components in GE rice.

  • Research and development of nano fiber products is very active over the world. Physical characteristics and dyeing properties of nylon 66 nano fiber were investigated in this study. X-ray diffraction, DSC, analysis of amino end group, and water absorption were performed to get information concerning physical properties of nano fiber. Nylon 66 nano fiber was dyed with high molecular mass acid dyes. Effects of dyeing temperature, pH of dyeing solution, and concentration of acid dyes on dyeing properties such as rate of dyeing and the extent of exhaustion, were examined and compared to those of regular fiber. It was found that nano fiber adsorbed acid dyes at lower temperature, got rapidly dyed, and its extents of exhaustion at specific dyeing temperature were higher than regular fiber. It was also observed that nano fiber could adsorb a large amount of acid dye without a significant loss in the extent of exhaustion. Washing fastness of the dyed nano fiber was lower by $1/2\~1$ grade, light fastness by 1 grade than the dyed regular fiber.

  • The cement mixtures such as flyash, iron-slag and silica fume have been actively studied in order to increase the quality of concrete. In this study, the grinded copper-slag with different proportion was added to portland cement. The physical properties of the cement mortars, (i.e.) flowability, absorption, compressive strength and flexural strength, were investigated for the potential application to the cement. Also, the influence of the acid on the chemical resistance of the cement mortars with copper-slag was evaluated by monitoring the weight variation of the cement mortars under 5 % sulfuric acid for 28 days.

  • The effcct of specific g~avity cont~olled In the .range fiom O.4 to 0.7 by particle size and added amount of A1 powder in the presence or absence of water repellent agent on the physical properties of ALC was examined to evaluate frost resistance and durability. The compressive sttcngth and the tensile strength are increased and independency with water repellent agent when the specific gravity is increased in the range from 0.4 to 0.7. According as the added amount of water repellent agent was increased. frost resistance was improved and absorption ratio was decreased. ALC produced from fine Al powder has a low volume reduction by scaling and a sound apperance after freezing/thawing test and top surface freezing test.

  • For the purpose of development of red color stain body, bone body which can be fired at 1180$^{\circ}C$ and has a higher degree of whiteness and transmission was developed and a property experiment depending on the content of $Fe_2O_3$ was performed. For manufacturing this body, 9% addition of bone ash to commercialized white body resulted in the best whiteness and proper physical characteristics. In an experiment of oxidized iron addition using this body as a basis, red color stain body fired up to 1150$^{\circ}C$ following the addition of 6% oxidized iron showed physical characteristics such as 5.4R color closer to theory color, 0.08% water absorption rate, 9.1% shrinkage, and 1861 kgf/$cm^2$ bending strength, which implies that this body is suitable for red color stain body.
