The thermal decomposition of phthalate alone and with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was carried out under a nitrogen atmosphere in a 4-necked separable flask. The thermal decomposition of phthalate in the presence of PVC began at 150$^{\circ}$, about 10$0^{\circ}C$ lower than the decomposition of phthalate alone. The formation of octyl chloride indicated an interaction reaction between phthalate and PVC. From the analysis of the composition of commercially plasticized PVC sheet (film and board), the phthalates (dibutyl phthalate, dihexyl phthalate) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate), 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, phthalic anhydride, and 2-ethylhexyl hydrogen phthalate were identified. The mutage-nicities of these decomposition products were higher than those of phthalic diesters (phthalates).

The purpose of this investigation was to investigate the degradation products of the dye component extracted from madder dyed fabrics using the GC-MS analysis and to evaluate the change of color due to degradation treatment. Four different degradation protocols were used in this study,; refrigeration at $7^{\circ}C$ (LT), room temperature (RT), oven treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ (OV), and $H_2O_2/UV(PER)$ method. Degradation times for each thermal system were 6 hour, 24 hour, 48 hour, 1 week, 2 week, 4 week. Alizarin was detected from the control and degraded samples of both alizarin dyed and madder dyed fabrics. Benzoic acid, 2, 4-di-tert-butylphenol, phthalic anhydride were detected as the degradation products for both alizarin dyed and madder dyed fabrics. The result suggest that these products can be used as the fingerprints of GC-MS analysis for the identification of madder dye in archaeological textiles. Both alizarin dyed and madder dyed samples became less red and less yellow after degradation. In the PER degradation system madder dyed sample showed the greatest color difference even after 1 week of degradation treatment. Further research is necessary for investigating the color change in the exhumed textiles, which is caused by the dual action of dye fading and the staining of organic matters in the soil.

Copolymerizations of propylene oxide (PO) and phthalic anhydride (PA) have been performed in the presence of double metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst as a means of incorporating ester groups in the polyol backbone. DMC catalyst was effective for the copolymerization and the reactivity ratios measured by modified Kelen-$T{\ddot{u}}d{\ddot{o}}s$ equation were $r_1(PA)\;=\;0$, and $r^2(PO)\;=\;0.248$. Four different Polyol samples containing 1.0, 2.1, 7.52, and 11.42 mol% of PA unit were utilized for the synthesis of thermoplastic polyurethanes of their hard segments of 19 wt%. As the incorporated amount of PA increases, the elongation of the resulting polyurethane decreases and the tensile strength and the tensile modulus increase. The modulation of the incorporated amount of PA into polyol backbone was proven to be a feasible way to tune the physical properties of polyurethanes.
A semiconducting poly(naphthalene quinone) radical (PNQR) was synthesized from Friedel-Craft acylation between naphthalene and phthalic anhydride and used as dispersing particles of a dry-base electrorheological (ER) material in silicone oil. Under an applied electric field (E), the dynamic yield stress (${\tau}_{dyn}$) of this ER fluid, obtained from a steady shear experiment with a controlled shear rate mode, was observed to increase with $E^{1.45}$ Based on this relationship, we propose a universal correlation curve for shear viscosity, which is independent of E using a scaling analysis.
A recycling process for the waste FRP from boats was developed. The recycling process is composed of decomposition of waste FRP with propylene glycol and synthesis of recycled unsaturated polyester resin from the decomposed liquid material. Prior to the decomposition, waste FRP was cut into 2cm x 5cm segments and mechanical impact was applied by press roller to give gaps between cumulated laminates. Propylene glycol effectively decomposed the waste FRP segments and glass fibers were easily separated from decomposed liquid material. Recycled unsaturated polyester resin could be made from the decomposed liquid material by reaction with maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride.

Carnosol is a phenolic antioxidant present in rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis). It is known for anti-inflammatory effects, analgesic activity and anti-cancer effects. However, no study has been dedicated yet to its effect on atopic dermatitis (AD). Here, we show that carnosol effectively inhibited LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) generation and expression of inflammatory marker proteins (iNOS and COX-2) in RAW 264.7 cells. In addition, carnosol effectively inhibits the phosphorylation of STAT3 and DNA binding activity in RAW 264.7 cells. Pull down assay and docking model analysis showed that carnosol directly binds to the DNA binding domain (DBD) of STAT3. We next examined the anti-atopic activity of carnosol ($0.05{\mu}g/cm^2$) using 5% Phthalic anhydride (PA)-induced AD model in HR1 mice. Carnosol treatment significantly reduced 5% PA-induced AD like skin inflammation in skin tissues compared with control mice. Moreover, carnosol treatment inhibits the expression of iNOS and COX-2 in skin tissue. In addition, the levels of $TNF-{\alpha}$, $IL-1{\beta}$, and Immunoglobulin-E in blood serum was significantly decreased in carnosol treated mice compared with those of 5% PA treated group. Furthermore, the activation of STAT3 in skin tissue was decreased in carnosol treated mice compared with control mice. In conclusion, these findings suggest that carnosol exhibited a potential anti-AD activity by inhibiting pro-inflammatory mediators through suppression of STAT3 activation via direct binding to DBD of STAT3.

A kind of Antihistamines, Azelastine HCl which known as modern H1-blockers, was synthesized by four step process using phthalic anhydride, 4-chlorophenylacetic acid, hydrazine 2HCl. The first step was the reaction of removing carboxyl group and hydroxyl group and the second step was saponification of 3-(4-chlorobenzylidene)phthalide. The third step was the nucleophilic addition reactions of primary amines and the fourth step was addition reaction of N-methyl-1-aza-bicyclo[3,2,0]heptane to 4-(4-chlorobenzyl)-1-(2H)phthalazinone. As a result, product was analyzed by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR and could be obtained with a yield of 80%.

In this study, nine kinds of polyimides were synthesized from 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PMDA), 4,4'-(4,4'-isopropylidenediphenoxy)bis(phthalic anhydride) (BPADA), m-pheny lenediamine (m-PDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) by controlling molar ratio of monomers. Synthesized polyimides were used as insulator films for 2-layer Flexible Copper Clad Laminate(FCCL) which were manufactured by the casting method. Glass transition temperature and thermal degradation temperature for 5% weight loss of the polyimide film were improved by increasing contents of m-PDA and PMDA, respectively. Water absorption of polyimide film was reduced by increasing contents of ODA and BPADA which have relatively long structure, respectively. Peel strength of 2-layer FCCL was improved by increasing contents of ODA and BPADA.
The basic medium oil modified alkyd resin was synthesized from linseed oil fatty acid(LOFA), phthalic anhydride(PAA), trimellitic anhydride(TMA ), and trimthylol propane(TMP) by condensation polymerization at $230^{\circ}C$. TMPTA modified water-reducible alkyd resins were synthesized with TMPTA graft copolymerization onto the basic resin at $180^{\circ}C$. Acid value of the resin was controlled by the addition of TMA and N,N-Dimethylethanol amino(DMEA) was used as an neutralizing agent to prepare water-reducible alkyd. To evaluate the optimum formulation for anionic alkyd resin, water proofness and water reducibility were estimated from the acid value or TMA contents. The effect of TMPTA on the graft copoymerization of the resin was studied by measuring molecular weight, glass transition temperature(Tg), viscosity, and gel contents. The suitable balance of water proofness and water reducibility of the resin was obtained at range of 5.3~7.0wt.% of TMA contents or 40~50 of acid value of basic resin. The molecular weight, viscosity, and gel contents of water-reducible alkyd resin were increased according to the TMPTA graft copolymerization, but Tg was decreased.
The basic medium oil modified alkyd resin was synthesized from linseed oil fatty acid(LOFA), phthalic anhydride(PAA), maleic anhydride(MA) and trimethylol propane(TMP) by condensation polymerization at $230^{\circ}C$. MA/TMPTA modified water-reducible alkyd resins were synthesized with TMPTA graft copolymerization onto the basic resin at $180^{\circ}C$. Acid value of the resin was controlled by the addition amount of MA and N,N-dimethylethanol amine(DMEA) was used as a neutralizing agent to prepare of the water-reducible alkyd resin. The effect of TMPTA on the graft copolymerization of the resin was studied by measuring molecular weight glass transition temperature(Tg), viscosity, graft efficiency, and gel contents of melanin cured film. Heat resistance, UV resistance and water resistance of cured film of MA/TMPTA modified resin was compared to those of TMA/TMPTA modified alkyd resin. The molecular weight, viscosity gel contents and graft efficiency of water reducible alkyd resin were increased according to the TMPTA graft copolymerization, but Tg was decreased. The viscosity was lower when the solid contents reached 40% than that of 30% content and also and also became lower with the extent of neutralization ratio, The heat resistance, UV resistance and water resistance of the MA/TMPTA modified alkyd resis were better than those of TMA/TMPTA modified alkyd resin but the storage stability of the TMA/TMPTA alkyd resis was better than that of MA/TMPTA modified alkyd resin.
