  • The electricity conversion-efficiency of solar cell for commercial application is about 6-15%. More than 85% of the incoming solar energy is either reflected or absorbed as heat energy. Consequently, the working temperature of the photovoltaic cells increases considerably after prolonged operations and the cell's efficiency drops significantly. PV/T refers to the integration of a PV module and a solar thermal collector in a single piece of equipment. By cooling the PV module with a fluid steam like air or water, the electricity yield can be improved. At the same time, the heat pick-up by the fluid can be to support space heating or service hot-water systems. In this study, a pulsating heat pipe solar heat collector was combined with single-crystal silicon photovoltaic cell in hybrid energy-generating unit that simultaneously produced low temperature heat and heat and electricity. This experiment was investigating thermal and electrical efficiency for evaluation of a PV/T system.

  • PV system is easy to operate and maintain than the other power generating system since it generally contains no moving parts, operates silently and requires very little maintenance. A solar cell generates DC power from sunlight whose power is different at any instance according to condition of irradiation and temperature variables. In order to improve the system utility factor and efficiency of energy conversion, it is desirable to operate the PV system at maximum power point of solar cell under different condition This paper describes the experimental results of the PV system contain solar modules and a DC-DC converter(boost type chopper) using fuzzy controller. The experimental results show that the PV system always operates at maximum power point of solar cells having stabilized output voltage waveform with relatively small ripple component.

  • Lanthanide(III)-cored complex as a wavelength conversion material has been successfully designed and synthesized for highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells, for the first time, since light with a short wavelength has not been effectively used for generating electric power owing to the limited absorption of these DSSCs in the UV region. A black dye (BD) was chosen and used as a sensitizer, because BD has a relatively weak light absorption at shorter wavelengths. The overall conversion efficiency of the BD/WCM device was remarkably increased, even with the relatively small amount of WCM added to the device. The enhancement in $V_{oc}$ by WCM, like DCA, could be correlated with the suppression of electron recombination between the injected electrons and $I_3{^-}$ ions. Furthermore, the short-circuit current density was significantly increased by WCM with a strong UV light-harvesting effect. The energy transfer from the Eu(III)-cored complex to the $TiO_2$ film occurred via the dye, so the number of electrons injected into the $TiO_2$ surface increased, i.e., the short-circuit current density was increased. As a result, BD/WCM-sensitized solar cells exhibit superior device performance with the enhanced conversion efficiency by a factor of 1.22 under AM 1.5 sunlight: The photovoltaic performance of the BD/WCM-based DSSC exhibited remarkably high values, $J_{sc}$ of 17.72 mA/$cm^2$, $V_{oc}$ of 720 mV, and a conversion efficiency of 9.28% at 100 mW $cm^{-2}$, compared to a standard DSSC with $J_{sc}$ of 15.53 mA/$cm^2$, $V_{oc}$ of 689 mV, and a conversion efficiency of 7.58% at 100 mW $cm^{-2}$. Therefore, the Eu(III)-cored complex is a promising candidate as a new wavelength conversion coadsorbent for highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells to improve UV light harvesting through energy transfer processes.

  • An energy generating greenhouse based on fluoropolymer envelope and fresnel lens is proposed. The outstanding properties of the fluoropolymer films make them very suitable for large scale solar applications. Extremely high optical transmission over the whole solar spectrum, combined with mechanical strength, and durability allows us to design a highly optimized greenhouses for both plant growing and energy generation. Systems such as photovoltaic triple junction cells are especially attractive since they have up to 35% efficiency with much less cell material when the sun beam is focused with concentrators such as fresnel lenses. Cooling such devices will enhance the efficiency and provide useful thermal energy that could be further utilized for various applications depending on the local demands. This article introduces the basic ideas and principles of the energy generating greenhouses as a first step towards the actual deployment of such systems under Korean environment.

  • As a new technical approach, the achievement of an eco-environmental leisure boat with a photovoltaic system is attempted by simultaneously actuating nine photovoltaic solar panels, in association with an applied sail control system by use of wind. In this approach, the photovoltaic system consists of a solar module, an inverter, a battery, and relevant components, while the sail control device is equipped with a sail up/down and mast-turning instrument. Furthermore, this research conducts a performance evaluation of the manufactured prototype and acquires the purposed quantity value and the development purpose items. The significant items-sail up/down speed (seconds) and mast turning angle (degrees)-are evaluated during the performance test. In the process of the performance evaluation, a wind direction sensitivity of 90% and a maximum instant charging power of 900 W were also obtained. In addition, the maximum sail time is evaluated in order to acquire the optimum quantity.

  • Solar electric systems have very little impact on environment, making them one of the cleanest power-generating technologies available. While they are operating, PV systems produce no air pollution, hazardous waste, or noise, and they require no transportable fuels. In PV system design, the selection and proper installation of appropriately-sized components directly affect system reliability, lifetime, and initial cost. In this research, we have studied the PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) signals. I proposed an efficient photovoltaic power interface circuit incorporated with a DC-DC converter and a sine-pwm control method full-bridge inverter. In grid-connected solar power systems, the DC-DC converter operates at high switching frequency to make the output current a sine wave, whereas the full-bridge inverter operates at low switching frequency which is determined by the ac frequency. Thus, it can reduce the switching losses incurred by the full-bridge inverter. Full-bridge converter is controlled by using microprocessor control method, and its operation is verified through computer aided simulations.

  • MPPT (maximum power point tracking) control is very important for the practical PV (photovoltaic) systems to maintain efficient power generating conditions irrespective of the deviation in the PV array insolation or/and temperature conditions. Although a plenty of researches have been done so far, most of them are too costly because of being too dependant on expensive sensors for measuring photovoltaic power and micro-processors for achieving elaborate and complicated control strategies. From this point of view, authors have been researching on sensor-less approaches for MPPT control, and have proposed two types of new control schemes 'Power Equilibrium Scheme' and 'Limit Cycle Scheme'. This paper summarises these two schemes with focussing on their :- operating principles and some results of simulation and experiments.

  • Due to advances such as photovoltaic power generation and energy storage system, energy self-consumption smart home system in which energy management system is built and energy is generated in house has been actively researched. In particular, due to the instability of the grid after the Fukushima nuclear accident, home system in which generating electricity from photovoltaic, storing and using it in energy storage system was commercialized in Japan. While subsidizing renewable energy projects through a combination of solar and energy storage systems in North America and Europe has expanded home installation. In this paper, we describe development of self-consumption smart home system which is connecting photovoltaic system and energy storage system in home area network and operating it based on real-time price. We implemented automated self-consumption home in which optimizing the use of energy from the power grid with minimal user's intervention.
