Policy implications for up-scaling of off-grid solar PV for increasing access to electricity in rural areas of Nepal: Best practices and lessons learned

  • Nepal has huge potential of hydro and other renewable energy resources including solar energy. However, only 70% of the total population have access to electricity despite the long history of hydropower development in the country. Still more than 37% population in rural areas and around 73% population in Karnali Province, one of the least developed provinces, are living without access to electricity despite taking several initiatives and implementing various policies by government supporting electrification in off-grid rural areas. Government together with donors and private sector has extensively been promoting the off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) echnology in un-electrified areas to increase electricity access. So far, more than 900,000 households in rural areas of Nepal are getting electricity from stand-alone solar PV systems. However, there are many challenges including financial, technical, institutional, and governance barriers in Nepal. This study based on extensive review of literatures and author's own long working experiences in renewable energy sector in Nepal, shares the best practices and lessons of off-grid solar PV for increasing access to electricity in rural areas of Nepal. This study suggests that flexible financial instruments, financial innovations, bundling of PV systems for concentrating energy loads, adopting standards process, local capacity building, and combination of technology, financing and institutional aspects are a key for enhancing effectiveness of solar PV technology in rural areas of Nepal.

  • A flyback inverter using voltage sensorless maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaic (PV) AC modules is presented. PV AC modules for a power rating from 150 W to 300 W are generally required for their small size and low price because of the installation on the back side of PV modules. In the conventional MPPT technique for PV AC modules, sensors for detecting PV voltage and PV current are required to calculate the PV output power. However, system size and cost increase when the voltage sensor and current sensor are used because of the addition of the auxiliary circuit for the sensors. The proposed method uses only the current sensor to track the MPP point. Therefore, the proposed control method overcomes drawbacks of the conventional control method. Theoretical analysis, simulation, and experiment are performed to verify the proposed control method.

  • This paper presents the results of changes of optical properties of front materials in crystalline PV modules. If PV modules on the outdoor, transmittance of front materials is reduced by solar light. That is UV, IR included Solar spectrum will have change the properties of glass. Therefore decrease in transmittance leads to loss of the PV modules output. All the PV modules showed the loss in Isc by 1~5% within few hors. To investigate the changes we are analyzed using spectrophotometer from raw glass to laminated glass.

Improved Orientation Strategy for Energy-Efficiency in Photovoltaic Panels

  • This paper presents an improved orientation strategy for energy-efficiency in photovoltaic (PV) panels. Conventionally, PV panels are tilted with the site's latitude angle or the difference between the latitude angle and the solar declination angle. A monthly-based orientation strategy has been proposed and analyzed in this study. The proposed strategy implies that the PV panels are tilted with the monthly-based angle that achieves the maximum incident radiation. Furthermore, the impact of using the proposed orientation strategy and three conventional strategies on the produced power and on the PV system design features has been investigated in detail. A Japanese city (Fukuoka) and an Egyptian city (Al-Kharijah) have been considered as locations for the PV power system installation. The results showed that the proposed strategy achieved an increase in the power produced from the PV power systems at the two different sites, and consequently the required solar cells area can be saved. Therefore, the cost of the PV power system components can be reduced including the solar cells area and the land area.

  • In the PV power system, output of the PV array must contain inherent ripples due to the single-phase inverter. So the function of maximum power point tracking to increase the output efficiency of PV system is degraded. Therefore, to overcome this problem, this paper presents a control strategy for the reducing ripples of the PV array output in grid-connected photovoltaic power system. The proposed control system consists of two loops the maximum power point tracking loop using the perturbation and observation method is used to calculate the reference solar array terminal voltage(Vref) for reducing ripples of the PV array output and the PI control loop is used to regulate the solar array output voltage according to the Vref. The performance of proposing control strategy is analyzed by means of the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation. As a result, we may obtain the high performance of the proposed control strategy.

  • This study proposes a constant power tracking algorithm to compensate for the intermittent characteristics of Photovoltaic connected to a DC micro grid. A PV-ESS integrated module in which distributed ESS is additionally connected is utilized for the proposed algorithm. PV performs P&O MPPT control at all times. To supplement the intermittent characteristics of PV, the proposed constant power tracking algorithm maintains constant power by operating the distributed ESS of the PV-ESS integrated module in accordance with the output state of the PV. By performing PSIM simulation and an experiment, this study verifies the performance of the integrated module of PV-ESS for DC micro grids applying the constant power tracking algorithm.

태양광 발전시스템에서 모듈 설치 각도와 어레이 간격의 비교 연구 (Comparison Researches for Installation of the Module Angles and Array Spacing on Photovoltaic Power System)

  • 본 논문에서는 태양전지를 가지고 일정량의 태양광으로부터 최대 유효전력을 얻기 위해 고정식 태양광 발전시스템과 태양 위치추적기를 부착한 태양광 발전시스템에서 PV모듈의 각도 변화 및 어레이 간격에 따른 최적의 발전효율에 대한 연구 및 실험을 하였다. 먼저, PV 모듈의 다양한 각도를 가지고 실험한 결과 PV 모듈 경사각 30[$^{\circ}$]에서 측정한 결과 값이 경사각 20[$^{\circ}$] 및 40[$^{\circ}$]일 때보다 발전 효율이 $12{\sim}17$[%] 상승되었다. 그러므로 본 논문의 연구 결과에서는 태양광 발전시스템의 실용화 측면에서 PV 모듈의 경사각 30[$^{\circ}$] 설치를 하여 발전을 하는 것이 가장 좋은 변환 효율을 얻을 수 있었다. 하지만 태양전지를 지붕 및 옥상에 설치를 할 경우, 면적 활용이 좁고 겨울에 눈이 쌓이게 될 경우에는 경사각에 의해 빠르게 쓸려 내려갈 수 있도록 경사각을 35[$^{\circ}$]로 선정하는 것이 타당하다.

See-through 형태의 투광형 태양광 모듈 제조를 위한 직렬접합형 스트랩 제조 기술 (Fabrication of Series Connected c-Si Solar Strap Cells for the See-through Type Photovoltaic Modules)

  • Transparent Photovoltaic (PV) modules have recently been in the spotlight because they can be applied to buildings and vehicles. However, crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar modules, which account for about 90% of the PV module market, have the disadvantage of applying transparent PV modules due to their unique opacity. Recently, a see-through type PV module using a crystalline silicon solar strap has been developed. However, there is a problem due to a decrease in aesthetics due to the metal ribbon in the center of the see-through type PV module and difficulty bonding the metal ribbon due to the low voltage output of the strap. In this study, to solve this problem, we developed a fabrication process of series connected c-Si solar strap cells using the c-Si solar cells. We succeeded in fabricating a series connected strap with a width of 2-10 mm, and we plan to manufacture an aesthetic see-through type c-Si PV module.

  • PV 태양광 발전은 PV 재료가 고가이므로 일반 전력비용에 비해 상대적으로 비용이 높아진다. 저가형 광학 집광기술과 PV를 통합하게 되면, 비용뿐만 아니라 설치면적 등에서 유리하게 되나, 집광기의 단점이 함께 추가되게 된다. 집광기는 작은 수광각과 송신광선을 갖고 있어 PV 모듈에 필요한 태양광, 광학손실의 손실정도를 최소화하기 위한 신중한 시스템 디자인과 2축형 트레킹 장치가 필요하다. 고정식 비집광 시스템보다 더 많은 에너지를 얻기 위해서는 광학시스템의 손실율을 줄이고, 고효율의 PV 모듈을 이용한 PV셀의 상호연결이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 우선, 비이미지 프레넬 렌즈 집광기를 사용한 PV 시스템에 대하여 간단하게 설명한 후, 출력전력값을 이론적으로 예측하고 PV 효율과 시스템 성능을 제시하였다. 프레넬 렌즈 선형 집광기 통합 PV 시스템과 비집광 PV 모듈의 출력전력값과 시스템 비용을 비교하면, PV 전력비용을 줄일 수 있는 집광기의 이용이 유용한 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서, 집광형 PV 시스템은 미래의 에너지 이용에 매우 유리한 시스템이라 할 수 있다.

  • Floating photovoltaic systems have been developed by the construction process such as design, construction, operation and management. Therefore, the power of floating photovoltaic systems has been calculated by using simple formulas and the optimal tracking interval is set by operation experience. But, flow characteristics have a decisive effect on it unlike land based PV systems. In this paper, a tracking floating photovoltaic system is modeled by using Matlab/simulink. The modeling for the floating photovoltaic system is verified through applying the flow characteristics based on actual operating data of 100㎾ class tracking floating photovoltaic.
