Building reconstruction attempts to generate geometric and radiometric models of existing buildings usually from sensory data, which have been traditionally aerial or satellite images, more recently airborne LIDAR data, or the combination of these data. Extensive studies on building reconstruction from these data have developed some competitive algorithms with reasonable performance and some degree of automation. Nevertheless, the level of details and completeness of the reconstructed building models often cannot reach the high standards that is now or will be required by various applications in future. Hence, the use of terrestrial sensory data that can provide higher resolution and more complete coverage has been intensively emphasized. We developed a fusion framework for building reconstruction from terrestrial sensory data, that is, points from a laser scanner, images from digital camera, and absolute coordinates from a total station. The proposed approach was then applied to reconstructing a building model from real data sets acquired from a large complex existing building. Based on the experimental results, we assured that the proposed approach cam achieve high resolution and accuracy in building reconstruction. The proposed approach can effectively contribute in developing an operational system producing large urban models for 3D GIS with reasonable resources.
The Global Positioning System technology has been widely used in positioning and attitude determination. It is well known that the accuracy, availability and reliability of the positioning results are heavily dependent on the number and geometric distribution of tracked GPS satellites. Because of this limitation, in some situations, such as in urban canyons, underground or inside of buildings, it is difficult to navigate with GPS receiver. Therefore, in order to improve the performance of satellite-based positioning, the integration of GPS with the pseudolite technology has been proposed. With this pseudolite technology, it is expected that seamless positioning service can be provided in a wider area without replacing existing GPS receivers. On the other hand, to adopt pseudolites on a larger scale, it is necessary to verify how the pseudolites may complement the existing GPS-based positioning. In this paper the authors present the details of the experiments and the results of the fundamental verification for seamless positioning using integration of GPS and pseudolite. This paper shows that the accuracy and efficiency of integrating GPS and pseudolite through the dynamic and static positioning experiment. The influence of pseudolite signal on GPS receiver is also discussed. The experimental results indicate that the accuracy of the height component can indeed be significantly improved, to approximately the same level as the horizontal component.

Researches utilizing the fourth industrial revolution technology are being conducted as a breakthrough for improving the earthworker productivity. In order to make the earthwork site smarter, it is necessary to digitize the construction site topography at first. For this purpose, photogrammetry using drones and LiDAR on MMS have been recently used. The purpose of this study is to analyze the accuracy of LiDAR by installation angles for verifying the application of MMS in the construction site. As a result of comparing the coordinates measured by the total station and the LiDAR, a small error of about 1-2 centimeters was shown. It is confirmed that MMS could be well applied to the earthwork site. In addition, there was no significant difference in the accuracy of the acquired coordinates according to the installation angle of the LiDAR, but the shape of the point clouds was different. The larger the installation angle, the better the shape of the site terrain is measured.
Comparing to general scanning data, the 3D digital map for large construction sites and complex buildings consists of millions of points. The large construction site needs to be scanned multiple times by drone photogrammetry or terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) survey. The scanned point cloud data are required to be registrated with high resolution and high point density. Unlike the registration of 2D data, the matrix of translation and rotation are used for registration of 3D point cloud data. Archiving high accuracy with 3D point cloud data is not easy due to 3D Cartesian coordinate system. Therefore, in this study, iterative closest point (ICP) registration method for improve accuracy of 3D digital map was employed by different overlap ratio on 3D digital maps. This study conducted the accuracy test using different overlap ratios of two digital maps from 10% to 100%. The results of the accuracy test presented the optimal overlap ratios for an ICP registration method on digital maps.

Recently, many studies have been performed to apply airborne LIDAR data to extracting urban models. In order to model efficiently the man-made objects which are the main components of these urban models, it is important to extract automatically planar patches from the set of the measured three-dimensional points. Although some research has been carried out for their automatic extraction, no method published yet is sufficiently satisfied in terms of the accuracy and completeness of the segmentation results and their computational efficiency. This study thus aimed to developing an efficient approach to automatic segmentation of planar patches from the three-dimensional points acquired by an airborne LIDAR system. The proposed method consists of establishing adjacency between three-dimensional points, grouping small number of points into seed patches, and growing the seed patches into surface patches. The core features of this method are to improve the segmentation results by employing the variable threshold value repeatedly updated through a statistical analysis during the patch growing process, and to achieve high computational efficiency using priority heaps and sequential least squares adjustment. The proposed method was applied to real LIDAR data to evaluate the performance. Using the proposed method, LIDAR data composed of huge number of three dimensional points can be converted into a set of surface patches which are more explicit and robust descriptions. This intermediate converting process can be effectively used to solve object recognition problems such as building extraction.

Representation of building internal space is an active research area as the need for more geometrically accurate and visually realistic increases. 3 dimensional representation is common ground of research for disciplines such as computer graphics, architectural design and engineering and Geographic Information System (GIS). In many cases CAD plans are the starting point of reconstruction of 3D building models. The main objectives of building reconstruction in GIS applications are visualization and spatial analysis. Hence, CAD plans need to be preprocessed and edited to adapt to the data models of GIS SW and then georeferenced to enable spatial analysis. This study automated the preprocessing of CAD data using AutoCAD VBA (Visual Basic Application), and the processed data was topologically restructured for further analysis in GIS environment. Accuracy of georeferencing CAD data was also examined by comparing the results of coordinate transformation by using digital maps and GPS measurements as the sources of ground control points. The reconstructed buildings were then applied to visualization and network modeling.

5. As the availability of images from Airborne Digital Camera with high resolution is expanded, a lot of concern are in the production and update of digital map. This study presents the method of updating the digital map at the scale of 1/1,000 using images from Aerial Digital Camera. Geometric correction was completed using GPS surveying data. For digital mapping, digital photogrammetric system was utilized to digitize buildings and roads. The absolute positional accuracy was evaluated using GPS surveying data and the relative positional accuracy was evaluated using the digital map produced by analytical mapping. The absolute positional accuracy was as follows: RMSE in X and Y were ${\pm}0.172m\;and\;{\pm}0.127m$, and average distance error was 0.208m. The relative positional accuracy was as follows: RMSE in X and Y were ${\pm}0.238m\;and\;{\pm}0.281m$, and average distance error was 0.337m. Accuracies of updating digital map using images from airborne Digital Camera were within allowable error established by NGII. Consequently, images from airborne Digital Camera can be used in various fields including the production of the national basic map and the GIS of local government.

TERCOM(TERrain COntour Matching), which is the one of the Terrain Referenced Navigation and used in the cruise missile navigation system, is still under development. In this study, the TERCOM based on area-based matching algorithm and extended Kalman filter is analysed through simulation. In area-based matching, the mean square difference (MSD) and cross-correlation matching algorithms are applied. The simulation supposes that the barometric altimeter, radar altimeter and SRTM DTM loaded on board. Also, it navigates along the square track for 545 seconds with the velocity of 1000km per hour. The MSD and cross-correlation matching algorithms show the standard deviation of position error of 99.6m and 34.3m, respectively. The correlation matching algorithm is appeared to be less sensitive than the MSD algorithm to the topographic undulation and the position accuracy of the both algorithms is extremely depends on the terrain. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an algorithm that is more sensitive to less terrain undulation for reliable terrain referenced navigation. Furthermore, studies on the determination of proper matching window size in long-term flight and the determination of the best terrain database resolution needed by the flight velocity and area should be conducted.

In this study, the performances of a medium grade IMU which is aimed for Mobile Mapping System and a low grade IMU for pedestrian navigation are analyzed through simulations under GPS signal blockage. In addition, an analysis on the accuracy improvement of barometer, electronic compass, or multi-sensor(combination of barometer and electronic compass) to correct medium grade or low grade IMU errors in the situation of GPS signal blockage is performed. With the medium grade IMU, the three dimensional positioning error from INS exceeds the demanded accuracy of 5m when the block time is over 30 seconds. When we correct IMU with barometer, compass, or multi-sensor, however, the demanded accuracy is maintained up to 60 seconds. In addition, barometer is more effective than the electronic compass when they are combined. In case of low grade IMU like MEMS IMU, the three dimensional positioning error from INS exceeds the demanded accuracy of 20m when the block time is over 15 seconds. When we correct INS with barometer, compass, or multi-sensor, however, the demanded accuracy is maintained up to 15 seconds in simulation results. On the contrary to medium grade IMU, electronic compass is more effective than the barometer in case of low velocity such as pedestrian navigation. It is expected that the analysis suggested a method to decrease position or attitude error using aided sensor integration when MMS or pedestrian navigation is operated under 1he environment of GPS signal blockage.
