A simple method of depositing titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) nanoparticles onto graphene oxide (GO) as a catalytic support was devised for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB). Thiol groups were utilized as linkers to secure the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. The resultant GO-supported $TiO_2$ (GO-$TiO_2$) sample was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, revealing that the anatase $TiO_2$ nanoparticles had effectively anchored to the GO surface. In the photodegradation of MB, GO-$TiO_2$ exhibited remarkably enhanced photocatalytic efficiency compared with thiolated GO and pure $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Moreover, after five-cycle photodegradation experiment, no obvious deactivation was observed. The overall results showed that thiolated GO provides a good support substrate and, thereby, enhances the photodegradation effectiveness of the composite photocatalyst.
Photochemical degradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) in Fe(III)/tartrate/$H_2O_2$ system was investigated utilizing fluorescent lamps as the primary light source. Effects of initial pH, light source, and initial concentration of each reactant on DMP photodegradation was examined. The results show that the system was able to effectively photodegrade DMP utilizing visible light. Fluorescent lamp, halide lamp, UV lamp and sunlight could all be used as the light sources. The optimal pH ranged among 3.0-4.0 for the system. Increases of the initial concentrations of Fe(III) and $H_2O_2$ accelerated the photodegradation of DMP, whereas excessively high initial tartrate concentration resulted in the decrease of photodegradation efficiency and rate of DMP.
The main objective of this study is to prepare the bionanocomposite films using mungbean starch (MBS), PVA, ZnS, and plasticizers, and to evaluate the physical properties, thermal stability, and photocatalytic activity. The bionanocomposite films were cross-linked by heat-curing process. The ZnS and bionanocomposite films were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and SEM. The results indicated that the mechanical properties and water resistance enhanced up to 1.2-1.5 times by the addition of nano-ZnS particles, and the thermal stability was improved by the addition of nano-ZnS particles. The photocatalytic activity of the bionanocomposite films added nano-ZnS particles was examined using bisphenol A (BPA) and methyl orange (MO). In addition, the photodegradation efficiency of BPA and MO was evaluated using the pseudo-first order kinetic model (PFOK).
1-Methylimidazole-2-thiol, as a kind of mercaptans, is a typical organic pollutant which has not been efficiently removed. In this study, titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) photocatalyst based on magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was synthesized via hydrothermal and sol-gel methods. The as-prepared photocatalyst was extensively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray energy diffraction spectrum (EDS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). This photocatalyst of $TiO_2$/$Fe_3O_4$/MWCNTs was proved to exhibit high photocatalytic efficiency and the photodegradation rate could reach nearly 82.7% for the degradation of 1-methylimidazole-2-thiol under ultraviolet irradiation. In addition, the results demonstrated that inorganic ions had a negative impact on photodegradation of 1-methylimidazole-2-thiol to varying degrees. Moreover, pH had a great and complex effect on photocatalytic degradation of 1-methylimidazole-2-thiol under ultraviolet irradiation.
A novel sol-gel method was implied to prepare CuO-doped ZnO nanoparticles. XRD and SEM techniques were used to characterize the CuO-doped ZnO sample. The photocatalytic degradation of Lidocaine HCl was investigated by two methods. The degradation was studied under different conditions such as the amount of photocatalyst, pH of the system, initial concentration, presence of electron acceptor, and presence of anions. The results showed that they strongly affected the photocatalytic degradation of Lidocaine HCl. The photodegradation efficiency of drug increased with the increase of the irradiation time. After 6 h irradiation with 400-W mercury lamp, about 93% removal of Lidocaine HCl was achieved. The degree of photodegradation obtained by Taguchi method compatible with the trial-and-error method showed reliable results.
Polypropylene beads (PP) coated with $TiO_2$ thin films were prepared by a rotating cylindrical plasma chemical vapor deposition (PCVD) reactor and were used to remove phenol in aqueous solution. The $TiO_2$ thin films of 416 nm thickness were coated on the PP particles uniformly. As the number of $TiO_2$-coated PP beads increases, the phenol is degraded faster, because of larger total surface area of photocatalysts for photodegradation. This study shows that a rotating cylindrical PCVD reactor can be a good method to prepare the particles coated with high-quality $TiO_2$ thin films, which can be applied to the pollutant removal by a photodegradation reaction of $TiO_2$ with high efficiency.
Nanosized TiO2 has been widely investigated in photoelectrochemical or photocatalytic applications due to their intrinsic properties such as suitable band position, high photocorrosion resistance, and surface area. In this study, to achieve the high efficiency in photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic performance, TiO2 nanotubular structures were formed by anodization at various temperatures and times. The morphological and crystal structure of the anodized TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties and incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of the TiO2 NTs were studied with different lengths and morphologies. From the detailed investigations, the optimum thickness of TiO2 nanotubes was 3 ㎛. Moreover, we found that the optimum photocatalytic pollutant removal efficiency of TiO2 nanotubes for photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated solar light was 5.34 ㎛ of tube length.
Titania is widely used as an effective photocatalyst for the photodegradation of environmental pollutants in air. In this study, novel N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts were synthesized via sol-gel method and characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometer, transmission electron microscope, and X-ray diffractometer. N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts were nano-sized with an average particle size of about 20 nm. The XRD pattern of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts showed both anatase and rutile phases. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts was evaluated by degradation of NO under UV and visible light irradiation at various parameters such as amount of photocatalyst, concentration of NO, and intensity of light. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts was effective for the enhancement of the degradation of NO and higher than that of $TiO_2$ photocatlysts under UV and visible light irradiation.
