  • In this study, we investigate terahertz (THz) generation by a photoconductive antenna with electrodes in the shape of split-ring resonators. According to our theoretical investigation based on a lumped-circuit model, the inductance of this electrode structure leads to resonant behavior of the photo-induced current. Hence, near the resonance frequency the spectral components generated by a resonant photoconductive antenna can be greater than those produced by a non-resonant one. For experimental verification, a resonant photoconductive antenna, which possesses a resonance mode at 0.6 THz, and a non-resonant photoconductive antenna with stripe-shaped electrodes were fabricated on a semi-insulating GaAs substrate. The THz generation by both of the photoconductive antennas demonstrated a good agreement with the theoretically expected results. The observed relationship between the resonant electrodes of the photoconductive antenna and the generated THz spectrum can be further employed to design a narrow-band THz source with an on-demand frequency.

  • A new temperature compensation technique for hot-wire anemometer is proposed in this article. In contrast to the available compensation techniques, a photoconductive cell is introduced here as a variable resistor in the bridge. The major advantage of adopting an active component such as photoconductive cell is that temperature compensation can be achieved by using any kind of temperature sensors, once the output of temperature sensor is given as a voltage. Thereby, the temperature compensation can be made automatically and intelligently by a computer software or a hardware device. Validation experiments using a photoconductive cell with a thermocouple-thermometer are conducted in the temperature range from 3$0^{\circ}C$ to 5$0^{\circ}C$ and the velocity ranges from 8 m/s to 18 m/s.

  • he photoconductive gain mechanism in amorphus silicon devices was investigated in connection with applications to radiation detection. Various device types such as p-i-n, n-i-n and i-i-p-i-n structures were fabricated and tested. Photoconductive gain was measured in two time scales : one for short pulses of visible light(<$1{\mu}sec$) which simulate the transit of energetic charged particles or ${\gamma}$-rays, and the other for rather long pulses of light(1msec) which simulate x-ray exposure in medical imaging, We used two definitions of phtoconductive gain : current gain and charge gain which is an integration of the current gain. We obtained typical charge gains of 3~9 for short pulses and a few hundreds for long pulses at a dark current density level of 10mA/$cm^2$. Various gain results are discussed in terms of the device structure, applied bias and dark current density.

  • A new hardware temperature compensation method for hot-wire anemometer is investigated and an analog compensating circuit is proposed in this article. A photoconductive cell is introduced here as a variable resistor in the anemometer bridge and the linearized output of a thermistor is used to monitor the input of the photoconductive cell. In contrast with the conventional method, any type of temperature sensor can be used for compensation if once the output of thermometer varies linearly with temperature. So the present technique can diversify the compensating means from a conventional passive compensating resistance to currently available thermometers. Because the resistance of a photoconductive cell can be set precisely by adopting a stabilizing circuit whose operation is based on the integration function of the operational amplifier, the accuracy of compensation can be enhanced. As an example of linearized thermometer, thermistor sensor whose output is linearized by a series resistor was used to monitor the fluid temperature variation. Validation experiment is conducted in the temperature ranged from 30 deg. C to 60 deg. C and the velocity up to 40 m/s. It is found that the present technique can be adopted as a compensating circuit for anemometer and hot-wire type airflow meter.

  • The photorefractive (PR) effect in liquid crystals sandwiched between photoconductive polymer layers was first studied by Ono et al. They reported that the PR effect vanished at steady state If there were not insulating layers because no charge trapping occurred in the photoconductive poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) layers. However we observed a significant PR effect in the polymer layered liquid crystal (PLLC) system where a liquid crystal layer doped with fullerene is sandwiched between two photoconductive PVK layers. • Variable temperature anemometer(VTA) has greater sensitivity than a conventional constant temperature anemometer(CTA). In order to design a reliable VTA system, however, an elaborate photoconductive cell stabilizing circuit which plays a key role in setting wire-overheat ratio should be firstly developed. In this study, a stabilizing circuit which adopts proportional-integral analog controller was proposed and thoroughly tested for its accuracy and reproducibility. In contrast to the available circuit suggested by Takagi, the present circuit has characteristic that the resistance of a photoconductive cell increases with the increase of input voltage, which makes the current circuit very suitable for the design of VTA. Finally, VTA adopting stabilizing circuit was made and the enhanced sensitivity of the VTA was validated experimentally by comparing the calibration curves of VTA and CTA.

  • Terahertz wave is a kind of electromagnetic radiation whose frequency lies in 0.1THz $\~$10THz range. In this paper, generation and detection characteristics of terahertz (THz) radiation by photoconductive antenna (PCA) method has been described. Using modern integrated circuit techniques, micron-sized dipole antenna has been fabricated on a low-temperature grown GaAs (LT-GaAs) wafer. A mode-locked Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser beam is guided and focused onto photoconductive antennas (emitter and detector) to generate and measure THz pulses. Ultra-wide band THz radiation with frequencies between 0.1 THz and 3 THz was observed. Terahertz field amplitude variation with antenna bias voltage, pump laser power, pump laser wavelength and probe laser power was investigated. As a primary application example. a live clover leaf was imaged with the terahertz radiation.
