The cuprous oxide cubes with the special porous surface constructed by nano-prisms have been successfully fabricated by a solvothermal method. The template-free method is simple and facile without any surfactant. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern suggests that the as-prepared product is the pure primitive cubic $Cu_2O$. The effects of the experimental parameters, such as the reaction temperature, reaction time and the concentration of sodium acetate anhydrous, on the morphologies of the products were investigated in detail by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on the time-dependent experiments, the possible formation mechanism was proposed. Using photocatalytic degrading reactive dyes as the model reaction and xenon lamp to simulate sunlight, the $Cu_2O$ cubes with the porous surface might possess higher photocatalytic activity than those of the commercial $Cu_2O$ powder in the visible-light region, indicating the excellent photocatalytic performance.
The photocatalytic oxidation of Rhodamine B (RhB) was studied using immobilized TiO$_2$ and fluidized bed reactor. Immobilized TiO$_2$ onto GF/C was employed as the photocatalyst and a 30 W germicidal lamp was used as the light source and the reactor volume was 4.8 L. The effects of parameters such as the amounts of photocatalyst, initial concentration, initial pH, air flow rate and anion additives (NO$_3$$\^$-/, SO$_4$$\^$2-/, Cl$\^$-/, CO$_3$$\^$2-/) competing for reaction. The results showed that the optimum dosage of the immobilized TiO$_2$ was 40.0 g/L. Initial removal rate of immobilized TiO$_2$ was expressed Langmuir - Hinshelwood equation.
As part of fundamental studies on the degradation of the organic compounds in industrial waste water, the photocatalytic degradation properties of the organic compound by means of the UV/TiO$_2$degradation process have been investigated. The test organic compound of acetic acid was chosen in this study. The testing of photo catalytic degradation were performed under various operation conditions such as TiO$_2$dosages, initial concentration of the organic, the aqueous pH's, etc. The effects of various parameters on the short time activity of the present acetic acid-UV/TiO$_2$system could be demonstrated from this investigation.

Because UV wavelength lights can activate photocatalysts, plasma is used as a light source of a photocatalytic reactor. Even though plasma has good intensity for photo reaction, substrate of catalyst coating was limited by the geometry of plasma generator. Usually bead type substrate was used for a pack bed type reactor. Honeycomb monolith type substrate was used with UV lamps instead plasma, due to the light penetration the honeycomb monolith length was too short to show good activity In this study a photocatalytic reactor, which is using a honeycomb monolith substrate, was investigated with plasma as an activation light source. As a parametric study the effects of 1311owing factors on plasma generation and power consumption are examined; supply voltage, substrate length, environment condition, catalyst loading and ratio. Using the test results, the practicability test was done with simulated synthetic gases representing bad smells and automotive exhaust gases.

Metal doping was adopted to modify TiO2 (P-25) and enhance the photocatalytic degradation of harmful cyanides in aqueous solution. Ni, Cu, Co, and Ag doped TiO2 were found to be active photocatalysts for UV light induced degradation of aqueous cyanides generating cyanate, nitrate and ammonia as main nitrogen-containing products. The photoactivity of Ni doped TiO2 was greatly affected by the state of Ni, that is, the crystal size and the degree of reduction of Ni. The modification effects of some mixed oxides, that is, Ni-Cu/TiO2 were also studied. The activity of Ni-Cu/TiO2 for any ratio of Cu/Ni was higher than that of Ni- or Cu-doped TiO2, and the catalyst at the Cu/Ni ratio of 0.3 showed the highest activity for cyanide conversion.
The nanosized $TiO_2$ photocatalysts were prepared by the hydrolysis of $TiCl_4$ and calcined at different temperatures. The resulting materials were characterized by TGA, DSC, XRD, and TEM testing techniques. XRD, TEM, and BET measurements indicated that the particle size of $TiO_2$ was increased with rise of calcination temperature and surface area was decreased with rise of it. The prepared $TiO_2$ photocatalysts were used for the photocatalytic degradation of congo red. The effects of calcination temperature, $TiO_2$ loading, the initial concentration of congo red, and usage frequencies were investigated and the rate constants were determined by regressing the experimental data. Calcination is an effective treatment to increase the photo activity of nanosized $TiO_2$ photocatalysts resulting from the improvement of crystallinity. The optimum calcination temperature of the catalyst for the efficient degradation of congo red was found to be $400^{\cric}C$. The rate constant was decreased with increase in the initial concentration of congo red and increased with increase in the $TiO_2$ loading. In the case of $TiO_2$ photocatalysts, the photocatalytic activity wasn't greatly affected by the usage frequencies.

Both UV Photolysis and Phtocatalytic Oxidation Processing are an emerging technology for the abatemant of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in atmospheric -pressure air streams. However, each process has some drawbacks of their own. The former is little known as an application for air pollution treatment, so it has been a rare choice in the field. Therefore we have to do more experiment and study for its application for treatment of VOCs. Although the latter has been used in the industrial fields, it still has a difficulty in decomposing high concentrations of VOCs. To solute these problems, we have been studying simultaneous application of those two technologies. We have studied the effects of background gas composition and gas temperature on the decomposition chemistry. It has shown that concentration of TCE and B.T.X., diameter of reactor, and wavelength of lamp have effects on decomposition efficiency. When using Photolysis Process only, the rates of fractional conversion of each material are found at TCE 79%, Benzene 65%, Toluene 68%, Xylene 76%. In case of Photocatalytic Oxidation Process only, the rates of fractional conversion decreased drastically above 30 ppm. When there two methods were combined, the rates of fractional conversion of each material are enhanced such as TCE 93%, Benzene 75%, Toluene 81%, Xylene 90%. Therefore, we conclude that the combination of Photolysis-Photocatalytic Oxidation process is more efficient than each individual process.
The application of advanced oxidation for the treatment of oil refinery wastewater under UV radiation by using nanoparticles of titanium dioxide was investigated. Synthetic wastewater prepared from phenol crystals; Power Glide SAE40 motor vehicle oil and water was used. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on the Box-Behnken design was employed to design the experimental runs, optimize and study the interaction effects of the operating parameters including catalyst concentration, run time and airflow rate to maximize the degradation of oil (SOG) and phenol. The analysis of variance and the response models developed were used to evaluate the data obtained at a 95% confidence level. The use of the RSM demonstrated the graphical relationship that exists between individual factors and their interactive effects on the response, as compared to the one factor at time approach. The obtained optimum conditions of photocatalytic degradation are the catalyst concentration of 2 g/L, the run time of 30 min and the airflow rate of 1.04 L/min. Under the optimum conditions, a 68% desirability performance was obtained, representing 81% and 66% of SOG and phenol degradability, respectively. Thus, the hydrocarbon oils were readily degradable, while the phenols were more resistant to photocatalytic degradation.

Sulfide photocatalysts, CdS and CdZnS, were synthesized using a simple precipitation method and their photocatalytic activities were evaluated by the degradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. The effects of four inorganic salt additives, KCl, NaCl, $K_3PO_4$, and $Na_3PO_4$, on the photocatalytic reaction were examined and the role of $K^+$, $Na^+$, $Cl^-$ and $PO_4{^{3-}}$ ions during photocatalytic reaction was discussed. The added inorganic salts were shown to have a remarkable effect on the photocatalytic reaction. It was also found that the anions in inorganic salts have a much more profound effect on the reaction rate, as compared to the cations. Under the present experimental conditions, $PO_4{^{3-}}$ revealed a significant inhibitory effect on the degradation rate whereas $Cl^-$ enhanced the rate slightly. This work pointed out that the consideration of additive effects is needed in the photocatalytic reaction for wastewater treatment.
For the production of functional $TiO_2$-biodegradable plastic (polybutylene succinate:PBS) composite material with photocayalytic activity, we attempted to prepare $TiO_2$ coatings on PBS substrate by HVOF and plasma spraying techniques under various conditions. The microstructures of coatings were characterized with SEM and XRD analysis, and the photocatalytic efficiency of coatings was evaluated by the photo degradation of gaseous acetaldehyde. The effects of primary particle size and spraying parameters on the formation behavior, photocatalytic performance of the coatings have been investigated. The results indicated that for both the HVOF sprayed $P_{200}$ and $P_{30}$ coatings, the high anatase ratio of 100% can be achieved regardless of fuel gas pressure. On the other hand, the HVOF sprayed $P_7$ coating exhibited a largely decreased anatase ratio (from 100% to 49.1%) with increasing the fuel gas pressure, which may be attributed to much higher susceptibility of heat for 7 nm agglomerated powder. HVOF sprayed $P_{200}$ and $P_{30}$ coatings show better performance as compared to that of plasma sprayed $P_{200}$ coatings owing to the higher anatase ratio. However, the HVOF sprayed $P_7$ coatings did not show the photocatalytic activity, which may result from the extremely small reaction surface area to the photocatalytic activity and low anatase ratio.
