Photoalignment of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

  • We report on studies of photoalignment of cholesteric liquid crystals on photosensitive phenylon-based polymer. We found that reflective and electro-optical characteristics of cholesteric cells strongly depend on UV exposure doze. The optimized UV treatment of the polymer allowed us to obtain the same quality of alignment on standard rubbed polyimide orientants. At the same time, the photosensitive orientant possesses evident advantage of the effective control of cholesteric textures

  • A new photoalignment material PM15CA, poly{N-(phenyl)maleimide-co-3-[4-(pentyloxy) cinnamate]propyl-2-hydroxy-1-methacrylate}, was synthesized and the electro-optical (EO) characteristics in the vertical-aligned (VA) liquid crystal display (LCD) photo-aligned on the photopolymer surface were studied. Excellent voltage-transmittance(V-T) characteristics in the VA-LCD photoaligned with polarized UV exposure of oblique direction on the pohotopolymer surfaces for 1 min can be achieved. The transmittance of the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface decreased with increasing UV exposure time. We suggest that the decrease of transmittance in the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface is attributed to the dissociation of the ester linkage in the photodimerized cinnamate structure with increasing UV exposure time

  • A new photoalignment material PFCPMI, poly [4-(fluorocinnamate) phenylmaleimide], was synthesized and the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities on the photopolymer surface. The NLC pretilt angle generated by non-UV filter method on the PFCPMI surface was higher than that of the UV filter method. A good LC alignment by non-UV filter method was observed at 150\`c of annealing temperature. However, the alignment defect of the NLC by UV filter method was measured above 150$^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good LC alignment in NLC using non-UV filter method can be achieved.

스티릴피리딘 곁사슬기를 가지는 용해성 폴리이미드의 합성과 광배향 (Synthesis and Photoalignment of Soluble Polyimides with Styrylpyridine Side Groups)

  • 감광성 폴리이미드의 전구체 폴리이미드는 2, 2, 2-트리플루오르에탄 디안하이드라이드의 유도체와 3,3'-디히드록시-4,4'-디아미노비페닐로부터 제조하였다. 감광성 폴리이미드(PI-SP6와 PI-SP12)는 전구체 폴리이미드와 감광성 2-스티릴피리딘알킬렌(헥실렌과 도데실렌)유도체로부터 제조하였다. 합성한 광반응성 폴리이미드는 여러 가지 유기 용매에 잘 녹았다. 감광성 폴리이미드의 초기 열분해온도는 $350^{\circ}C$였다. PI-SP6와 PI-SP12의 유리전이온도는 $130^{\circ}C$$85^{\circ}C$였다. 이는 헥실렌기를 가지는 PI-SP6 보다 도데실렌기를 가지는 PI-SP12가 유연하다는 것을 의미한다. 이들 감광성 고분자의 필름은 $250^{\circ}C$에서도 90%의 투과율을 유지하였다. 이 결과는 이들 감광성 폴리이미드가 투명성 및 내열성이 우수한 고분자라는 것을 의미한다. PI-SP6와 PI-SP12는 $1.5\;J/cm^2$ 광량에서 이색비가 각각 0.01과 0.03이었다. 이 결과는 광배향에 유연한 알킬렌 스페이서를 가지는 감광성 폴리이미드가 보다 효과적이라는 것을 뜻한다.

  • We examine the surface alignment of liquid crystals (LC's) by a double linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light expose process. Exposing polarized light induces a surface anisotropy to polyimide (PI) layer surfaces and hence determines the alignment direction. LPUV exposes with angular difference of $45^{\circ}$ between two polarization directions make LC director change.

  • 파장 355 nm인 Nd:YAG 레이저의 3차 고조파 자외선 레이저빔을 이용하여 색소첨가 폴리이미드 필름을 광배향시키고 이것을 사용하여 액정셀을 제작하였다. 광배향으로 제작된 액정셀의 특성을 알아보기 위하여 정렬성, 광투과곡선, 응답시간 둥을 측정하여 러빙에 의한 액정셀과 비교하였다. 그 결과 광배향 액정셀은 러빙에 의한 액정셀에 비하여 정렬성, 선경사각, 광투과도 등의 특성은 떨어지나 낮은 문턱전압과 빠른 응답시간 특성을 가진 것으로 나타났다.
