Thermal and Photochemistry of Methyl Iodide on Ice Film Grown on Cu(111)

  • Thermal and photochemistry of methyl iodide ($CH_3I)\;adsorbed\;on\;D_2O$ ice film on Cu(111) at 100 K were studied using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS), X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies. On the basis of TPD, multilayer and monolayer $CH_3I$ molecules desorb from $D_2O$ ice layer at 120 and 130 K, respectively. Photo-irradiation at 100 K exhibits dramatic changes in the TPD and I $3d_{5/2}\;XPS\;of\;CH_3I$ on ice film, due to a dramatic dissociation of $CH_3I$. The dissociation is likely activated by solvated electrons transferred from the metal substrate during photo-irradiation. No other photo-initiated reaction products were found within our instrumental detection limit. During photo-irradiation, the $CH_3I$, $CH_3$ and I could be trapped (or solvated) in ice film by rearrangement (and self-diffusion) of water molecules. A newly appeared parent molecular desorption peak at 145 K is attributed to trapped $CH_3I$. In addition, the $CH_3$ and I may diffuse through ice and chemisorb on Cu(111), indicated by TPD and I $d_{5/2}$ XPS taken with photo-irradiation time, respectively. No molecular ejection was found during photo-irradiation at 100 K. The work functions for $CH_3I/Cu(111),\;D_2O/Cu(111)\;and\;CH_3I/D_2$O/Cu(111) were all measured to be about 3.9 eV, 1.0 eV downward shift from that of clean Cu(111).

  • An experiment to find out the removal mechanism of PEG(polyethyleneglycol) by using UV-enhanced $O_2$ GPC (gas phase cleaning) at low substrate temperature below $200^{\circ}C$ was executed under various process conditions, such as substrate temperature, UV exposure, and $O_2$ gas. The possibility of using $UV/O_2$ GPC as a low-temperature in-situ cleaning tool for organic removal was confirmed by the removal of a PEG film with a thickness of about 200 nm within 150 sec at a substrate temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Synergistic effects by combining photo-dissociation and photo oxidation can only remove the entire PEG film without residues within experimental splits. In $UV/O_2$ GPC with substrate temperatures higher than the glass transition temperature, the substantial increase in the PEG removal rate can be explained by surface-wave formation. The photo-dissociation of PEG film by UV exposure results in the formation of end aldehyde by dissociation of back-bone chain and direct decomposition of light molecules. The role of oxygen is forming peroxide radicals and/or terminating the dis-proportionation reaction by forming peroxide.

소성온도에 따른 광유기된 프리틸트와 액정배향 (Liquid crystal alignment and photo-induced pretilt by imidization temperature.)

  • In this study, we investigated pretilt angle generation and liquid crystal alignment by UV light irradiation during imidization of polyimide. Generated pretilt angle of NLC by using in-situ UV photo-alignment method was smaller than that of the conventional UV photo-alignment method. Also, generated pretilt angle of NLC tends to increase by annealing. We found that in-situ UV photo-alignment method has higher thermal stability of LC alignment, but it has a disadvantage to control pretilt angle.

  • Effects of alignment layers on pretilt nagle generation and electrical characteristics in nematic liquid crystal(NLC) by using photo-alignment techniques on polyimide PI) surface with side chain were studied. The generated pretilt angle of the NLC on rubbed PI surface with 1-layer is almost the same as that with the 2-layers. However, the generated pretilt angle of the NLC on photo-induced PI surface with 2-layers is larger than that with the 1-layer. The different mechanism of pretilt generation in NLC was observed on the rubbing and photo-alignment method. Therefore, the pretilt angle of the NLC on photo-induced PI surface is attributed to surface roughness due to photo-dissociation on the polymer with UV light irradiation on PI surface. We observed the same characteristics of voltage-transmittance (V-T) and response time for 1- and 2-layers on PI surface. Consequently, we sugest that the VHR of photo-aligned TN-LCD is higher than that of the rubbing-aligned TN-LCD.

Effects of Triplet Excitons on Photocurrent of Polymer Photovoltaic Devices

  • The rolls of triplet excitons in a polymer based photovoltaic (PV) device are investigated for improving the efficiency of PV devices. Generally, the thick photo-absorbing layer can improve the PV device efficiency by increasing the photon absorption. However, in case of PV devices with singlet excitons, the efficiency is limited by the short exciton diffusion length, which depends on the mobility and lifetimes of excitons. Therefore, using the triplet excitons, which have a higher mobility and longer lifetime, can solve the problem of premature exciton dissociation caused by the shorter singlet exciton diffusion length in the thick photo-absorbing layer. In this study, the triplet exciton dynamics of a conjugated polymer in a phosphorescent dye blended polymer PV device is investigated by photo-induced absorption, and PV devices performance at various concentrations of phosphorescent dye are is also evaluated.

  • The photocatalytic performance of $TiO_2$ thin films coated on porous alumina balls using various aqueous $TiOCl_2$ solutions as starting precursors, to which 1.0 $mol\%$ transition metal ($Ni^{2+},\;Cr^{3+},\;Fe^{3+},\;Nb^{3+},\;and\;V^{5+}$) chlorides had been already added, has been investigated, together with characterizations for $TiO_2$ sols synthesized simultaneously in the same autoclave through hydrothermal method. The synthesized $TiO_2$ sols were all formed with an anatase phase, and their particle size was between several nm and 30 nm showing ${\zeta}-potential$ of $-25{\sim}-35$ mV, being maintained stable for over 6 months. However, the $TiO_2$ sol added with Cr had a much lower value of -potential and larger particle sizes. The coated $TiO_2$ thin films had almost the same shape and size as those of the sol. The pure $TiO_2$ sol showed the highest optical absorption in the ultraviolet light region, and other $TiO_2$ sols containing $Cr^{3+},\;Fe^{3+}\;and\;Ni^{2+}$ showed higher optical absorption than pure sol in the visible light region. According to the experiments for removal of a gas-phase benzene, the pure $TiO_2$ film showed the highest photo dissociation rate in the ultraviolet light region, but in artificial sunlight the photo dissociation rate of $TiO_2$ coated films containing $Cr^{3+},\;Fe^{3+}\;and\;Ni^{2+}$ was measured higher together with the increase of optical absorption by doping.

PHYSICS REVEALED BY BROAD-RANGE CO LADDERS AND FINE-STRUCTURE LINES IN M83

  • Since the launch of the Herschel Space Observatory, our understanding about the photo-dissociation regions (PDR) has taken a step forward. In the bandwidth of the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) of the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE) on board Herschel, ten CO rotational transitions, including J = 4 - 3 to J = 13 - 12, and three fine structure lines, including [$C{\small{I}}$] 609, [$C{\small{I}}$] 370, and [$N{\small{II}}$] $205{\mu}m$, are covered. I present our findings from the FTS observations at the nuclear region of M83, based on the spatially resolved physical parameters derived from the CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) map and the comparisons with the dust properties and star-formation tracers. This article discusses (1) the potential of using [$N{\small{II}$] 205 and [$C{\small{I}}$] $370{\mu}m$ as star-formation tracers; (2) the excitation mechanisms of warm CO in the nuclear region of M83.

Poly[N-(phenyl)maleimide]계 광폴리머를 이용한 액정배향효과 (Effects of Liquid Crystal Alignment on the Photopolymer based Poly[N-(phenyl)maleimide])

  • The new phto-alignment material PMI5CA, poly{N-(phenyl)maleimide-co-3-[4-(pentyloxy) cinamate]porpyl-2-hydroxy-1-methacrylate}, was synthesized and the electro-optical (EO)characteristics in the vertical-aligned(VA) liquid crystal display (LCD) photo-aligned on the photopolymer surface were studied. Excellent Voltage-transmittance(V-T) characteristics in the VA-LCD photoaligned with polarized UV exposure of oblique direction on the pohotopolymer surface for 1 min can be achieve. The transmittance of the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface decreased with increasing UV exposure time. We suggest that decrease of transmittance in the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface is attributed to the dissociation of the ester linkage in the photodimerized cinnamate structure with increasing UV exposure time.

New Calculation of Charge Generation Efficiency and Photocurrent in Organic Photoconducting Device

  • A new approach was applied to examine the charge generation and transport in organic photoconductive devices by Monte‐Carlo simulation utilizing multiple site interactions of carriers with all other charges within Coulomb radius. Stepwise generation frame was considered first by a charge separation process that was counted in two separate transactions, i.e., hopping against physical decay and dissociation against recombination. Thereafter, diffusion/ drifting process of free carriers was counted to follow. This method enables to examine readily the photocurrent generated alongside the charge generation efficiency. The field and temperature dependences of the efficiency and photocurrent were obtained comparable to Onsager’s and experimental data.
