  • A laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate the phosphorus status and define the relationship between composition of phosphorus forms and available phosphorus with 149 phosphorus accumulated soil samples. Distribution percentage of inorganic, organic and available phosphorous to total phosphorus were 68.9 (Saloid-p 2.7, Al-p 26.4, Fe-p 27.6, Ca-p 12.2%), 6.7 and 26.0%, respectively. In the relationship between available phosphorus and inorganic phosphorus in soil, Al-p, Saloid-P, and Ca-P showed significant correlation with available phosphorus which did not showed significant one with Fe-p. Multiple liner regression equation between available and inoganic phosphorus abtained as follow, $Av.P=81.694+0.858Sa-p^{***}+0.648Al-p^{***}+0.091Ca-p^{**}(R=0.826^{***})$ and contribution rates of Saloid-p, Al-p, and Ca-p to available phosphorus were 26.1, 65.2, and 8.7%, respectively. Relationship between available and water soluble phosphorus, water soluble phosphorus and $0.01M-CaCl_2-p$ were highly significant, respectively, and soil solution P extracted with $0.01M-CaCl_2$ for 30 minutes was selected as one of usable diagnostic techniques for soil P status.

  • A pot experiment was conducted to define the effect of various soil phosphorus fractions for soybean yield and the relations of between various soil phosphorus fraction and each other in 11 upland soils with different capacities of phosphorus fixation and physico-chemical properties of soils. The effect of phosphorus fertilization was high in soils with high capacities of phosphorus fixation and low available phosphorus, and soybean yield was showed significant relationship with available phosphorus and inorganic soil phosphorus fractions. Fractional recovery of added phosphorus in soils were showed various range of 2.5-91.7%, and mean value of soils was 48.5%. In the relationships among the soybean yield, plant phosphorus content, phosphorus uptake and available phosphorus, inoganic phosphorus at flowering stage, soybean yield were showed significant relationship with available phosphorus content, phosphorus uptake were all showed significant correlation without Fe-P, but Fe-P was showed except Jeju soil. Al-P/Fe-P ratio was increased by phosphorus fertilization in soils at flowering stage, and in the relationships between Al-P/Fe-P ratio and soybean yield, phosphorus uptake, soil and plant phosphorus were showed high significant correlation, but Fe-P was not showed at flowering stage. P sorbed by soils from P 20ppm solution was decreased by phosphorus fertilization, and then decreasing rate was higher in soils with low capacity of phosphorus fixation then high phosphorus fixing soils. Also P sorbed was showed negatively high significant correlation with available phosphorus, plant phosphorus, phosphorus uptake and soil inorganic phosphours except Fe-P, and soybean yield was not showed.

  • Study was conducted on how the phosphorus content of algae changed by the algal species and the algal growth conditions. Phosphorus contents were not so different by algal species if algae grow on the same phosphorus concentration. Phosphorus content of algae grown on higher P medium was higher than that of algae grown on lower P medium. Algae excrete P-compounds from cell to the medium when the dissolved reactive phosphorus is depleted in the medium, and the excreted P-compounds were decomposed by algae and used for the growth of algae. Phosphorus content of algae grown in the P-limited condition was about 5-1 $\mu$gP/mg dry wt., but that of algae grown in the condition not P-lirnited was above 10$\mu$gP/rng dry wt.

  • The growth and removal capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus of Chlorella vulgaris were evaluated in artificial wastewater with different nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations as element growing components for microalgae growth. The nitrogen concentration was varied in 9, 15, 30 and 60 mg-N/L with fixed phosphorus concentration of 3 mg-P/L. The growth and phosphorus removal capacity of C. vulgaris were high at initial nitrogen concentration of 15 and 30 mg-N/L, and the corresponding N/P ratios calculated were 5 and 10. In the case of varying in 1.5, 3, 6 and 10 mg-P/L of phosphorus concentration with fixed nitrogen concentration of 30 mg-N/L, the growth and removal capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus were excellent with phosphorus concentration of 3 and 6 mg-P/L. The corresponding N/P ratios were shown as 10 and 5. Therefore, the appropriate N/P ratio was concluded between 5 and 10 for wastewater treatment using C. vulgaris.

  • This study investigates the behavioral characteristics and forms of phosphorus in the sediment according to the oxygen condition (aerobic/anaerobic). In the behavioral characteristics analysis, Al-P and Fe-P concentrations were the highest among the forms of inorganic phosphorus, and therefore had the strongest impact on sorption and release corresponding to environmental condition changes. In the experimental investigation of the inorganic forms of phosphorus in the sediment according to the oxygen condition, we determined that the forms of inorganic phosphorus did not greatly affect the sorption or release reaction because the distribution ratios of the inorganic forms remained constant corresponding to changes of dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions. In contrast, the forms of organic phosphorus in the sediments affected both sorption and release. Furthermore, labile-P and moderately labile-P forms were the major mechanisms of sorption in sediment. Moderately labile-P was the greatest contributor to phosphorus release action in sediment. As environmental changes are important for the behavioral characteristics of phosphorus in sediment, the forms of phosphorus should be considered to have a greater effect, especially in the organic phosphorus case. Therefore, based on the present study results, sediment evaluation aimed at controlling internal pollutants in reservoirs should include an examination of the forms of phosphorus present, as well as the release characteristics of environmental changes, which are influential factors of phosphorus control. Further research in this field is required.

  • Laboratory experiment was carried out to investigate the changes in the amount of inorganic phosphorus fractions of native and applied phosphorus and to compare the some analytical methods of soil phosphorus in volcanic ash. The rates of inorganic phosphorus to total-pP were varied with the kinds of soil in the ranges of 6.9 to 28.8% for Al-P, 24.1 to 26.9% for Fe-P, 7.4 to 11.9% for Ca-P and 0.7 to 8.0% for available phosphorus. The composition of inorganic phosphorus after incubation for 60 days was in the order of Al-P>Fe-P>Ca-P in Black soil, Fe-P>Al-P>Ca-P in Very dark brown soil, Fe-P>Ca-P>Al-P in Dark brown soil and Fe-P Al-P>Ca-P on Red yellow soil. The amounts of phosphorus extracted from soil varied with the methods for available phosphorus estimation. The magnitute of available P measured by Bray No. 2 method was the greatest. In relationship between inorganic phosphorus forms and available phophorus, Bray No. 2 method was closely related to Ca-P only and Olsen method correlated to Al-P, Fe-P, Ca-P and Total-P.

  • Bench scale experiments were carried out with two biological nutrient removal(BNR) units, A/O and $A^2O$ processes, to investigate the behavior of phosphorus in the system and to compare the characteristics of phosphorus removal in two BNR processes. To achieve this goal, COD/T-P and COD/TKN ratios of the influent was varied in the range of 23~64 and 5~24, respectively. In A/O process, influent COD/T-P ratio should be kept higher than 44mg/L to meet the final effluent T-P concentration lower than 1mg/L and in $A^2/O$ process, influent COD/T-P and COD/TKN ratios higher than 56 and 10, respectively, were required for good phosphorus release and uptake with no influence of nitrate nitrogen in return sludge. At this conditions, the rate of phosphorus release in the anaerobic basin should be kept higher than 0.1 kg S-P/kg MLVSS d In A/O process, the phosphorus content of anaerobic and aerobic sludges was increased as SRT of total system was becoming longer resulting in decreasing the difference of phosphorus content between two sludges while phosphorus release in anaerobic basin and phosphorus uptake in aerobic basin was not incident. In $A^2/O$ process, the phosphorus content of anaerobic and aerobic sludges were not increased with higher SRT of total system due to the relatively high nitrate concentration in return sludge. However, the difference of phosphorus content between anaerobic and aerobic sludges was incident when phosphorus release and uptake was observed.

  • Soybean plants inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum MN 110 were supplied with nutrient solutions containing 1.0, 0.25 and 0.5.nM-P to characterize the effect of externaI-P supply on the phosphorus status of nodules and on the P-uptake system of isolated bacteroids from nodules. After 48 days of growth, whole plant dry mass in the 0.25 and 0.05 mM-P treatments decreased significantly. The Pi concentrations in nodules were 4.1, 2.5 and 2.0 mM for 1.0, 0.25 and 0.05 mM-P treatments, respectively. The external-P supply did not significantly affect the distribution of phosphorus among inorganic phosphate(Pi), soluble organic-phosphorus(SOP) and insoluble organic-phosphorus(TOP) fractions in nodules. The Pi concentrations in young leaves of 0.25 and 0.05 mM-P plants were 33% and 20% , respectively, of those in young leaves of 1.0 mM-P plants and Pi concentrations in old leaves were only 16% and 7%, respectively, of those in old leaves of 1.0 mM-P plants. Phosphorus deficiency decreased the percentage of total leaf phosphorus in the Pi fraction and increased the percentage of total leaf phosphorus in the IOP fraction. The bacteroid number ranged from 0.87 to $1.30{\times}10^{11}$ Per GFW nodule regardless of external-P supply to the host Plants and Plant age, The P-uptake rates were the same (15-16 pmoles /min./$10^8$ bacteroids) for the bacteroids isolated from nodules of 1.0 mM-P and 0.05 mM-P plants. These results indicate that Pi concentrations in nodules of phosphorus-deficient plants are sufficient for proliferation of bacteroids and that the P-uptake system of bacteroids is in a repressed state even when host plant growth is severely restricted by phosphorus-deficiency stress.

  • The need for refining dietary nutrient levels and limited information regarding Holstein steer and phosphorus supplementation led to the objective of examining the response of removing supplemental dietary phosphorus from a corn-based finishing diet offered to yearling Holstein steers. Two groups of yearling Holstein steers were utilized to study responses of increasing dietary phosphorus level during the finishing period. In Exp. 1, 96 Holstein steers (419 kg) were blocked into four weight groups. Dietary treatments included no additional phosphorus (NDC) or the inclusion of dicalcium phosphate (DCP) to achieve 0.30% phosphorus (P) in the complete diet. Daily gain, DMI and carcass traits were not different (p>0.05). Overall gain efficiency was slightly lower for NDC (p<0.05). Exp. 2 consisted of 78 Holstein steers (491 kg) blocked into two weight groups. Steers were harvested on d 84 and 112 d on test with carcass data collected following a 48-h chill. No differences (p>0.05) were detected for DMI, ADG, or gain efficiency. No differences (p>0.05) were detected in carcass characteristics in this experiment. Percent bone ash, calcium, P, and bending moment also did not differ among treatments (p>0.05). Removing supplemental phosphorus in the feedlot diet did not produce adverse effects on steer performance, carcass, or rib bone characteristics for yearling Holstein steers.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate and to predict of eutrophication in lakes by using Vollenweider-OECD model and total phosphorus concentration and inflow rate which were measured in 1993∼2001. The results of study were as follows. The annual total phosphorus loading from the watershed was calculated to be 55∼195tP/yr at lake Soyang, 221∼466tP/yr at lake Taechong, 123∼278tP/yr at lake Andong, 57∼109tP/yr at lake Seomjin. These are discharged, far the most parts, from population and fishfarm facility. TP loading on the surface area at lake Soyang was 3.01gP/㎡/yr, 2.82gP/㎡/yr, 2.84gP/㎡/yr, 3.03gP/㎡/yr, 2.34gP/㎡/yr, 1.78gP/㎡/yr, 0.91gP/㎡/yr, 0.89gP/㎡/yr, 0.86gP/㎡/yr, lake Taechong was 6.71gP/㎡/yr, 7.25gP/㎡/yr, 7.24gP/㎡/yr, 6.53gP/㎡/yr, 6.50gP/㎡/yr, 7.06gP/㎡/yr, 7.04gP/㎡/yr, 4.05gP/㎡/yr, 3.44gP/㎡/yr and TP loading on the surface area of lake Andong, lake Soemjin were 5.39gP/㎡/yr, 4.47gP/㎡/yr, 4.56gP/㎡/yr, 4.45gP/㎡/yr, 3.33gP/㎡/yr, 2.38gP/㎡/yr, 2.53gP/㎡/yr, 2.46gP/㎡/yr, 2.54gP/㎡/yr, 4.09gP/㎡/yr, 4.10gP/㎡/yr, 3.98gP/㎡/yr, 3.73gP/㎡/yr, 2.80gP/㎡/yr, 3.46gP/㎡/yr, 3.22gP/㎡/yr, 2.19gP/㎡/yr, 2.13gP/㎡/yr respectively. The tropic states of four lakes can be assessed as eutrophy because phosphorus leading exceeds the critical phosphorus loading by Vollenweider-OECD model.
