인산형 연료전지 성능 특성에 미치는 전극 제조 조건의 영향 (Effects of electrode fabrication conditions on performance characteristics of phosphoric acid fuel cell)

  • Performance characteristics of single cell in phosphoric acid fuel cell were studied for various electrode fabrication parameters such as teflon content, electrode structure, thickness of electrocatalyst layer, platinum content and electrode area. The performance of single cell was decided from the measured voltage-current through a load change. The electrode of 40wt.% teflon exhibited high initial performance of single cell, but in the long term operation, the cell performance of 45 wt.% teflon was better. Also the single cell appeared good performance in case of electrodes with duplicate structure, thin electrocatalyst in thickness, more platinum content, and small area. These results of cell performance were discussed as related to the electrolyte flooding, formation of 3 phase boundary area, internal resistance of electrode, and microstructure of electrode.

  • Effects of reactant gas flow rates and starvation on phosphoric acid fuel cell performance were studied. As the reactant gas flow rates increased, the cell performance increased and then the cell maintained constant performance. The optimum flow rates of hydrogen, oxygen and air under galvanostatic condition of 150 mA/cm$_{2}$ are found to be 5cc/min cm$_{2}$ 5cc/min cm$_{2}$ and 15cc/min cm$_{2}$ at room temperature and 1 atm, respectively. Also the open circuit voltage of single cell decreased with increasing oxygen flow rate due probably to the decreased probably to the decreased oxygen pressure in the cathode side. Hydrogen and oxygen starvation resulted in voltage loss of about 5mV and 0-2mV, respectively. The voltage loss was independent of starvation time. These results were discussed from point of view of electrochemical reaction of the cell. (author). 9 refs., 8 figs.

  • 연료전지는 일정하게 유지되는 전극-전해질계의 공정에 의해 연료와 산화제의 화학에너지를 전기에너지로 끊임없이 전환시킬 수 있는 전기화학장치이다. 인산형 연료전지는 전해질로 진한 인산염을 사용한다. 연료전지 시스템에서 가장 중요한 부분인 스택은 연료의 산화가 일어나는 anode, 산화물의 환원이 일어나는 cathode, 그리고 anode와 cathode를 분리시키고 이온을 전도시키는 전해질로 이루어져 있다. 연료전지의 성능은 시스템의 환경에 따른 작동 및 디자인 변수들에 의해 좌우된다. 따라서 연료전지의 핵심부분이라 할 수 있는 스택의 성능향상을 위하여 전산유체역학 코드를 이용한 스택에 대한 3차원적 모델링 및 전기화학반응이 포함된 모사를 수행하였다. 이로부터 산화제의 유량변화에 따른 스택 내부에서의 연료, 산화제 및 생성물의 농도, 그리고 반응에 의해 생성된 열의 전달에 의한 스택의 온도 분포 및 변화를 전산유체 코드인 FLUENT를 이용하여 계산하였다.

  • Preparation and characteristics of a matrix retaining electrolyte using SiC whisker, PES binder, and NMP(n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) as a non-volatile solvent for a phosphoric acid fuel cell were investigated. The conditions of binder and plasticizer, and the effects of substituting a volatile solvent by a non-volatile solvent were also studied. The minimum amount of the binder was about 17 wt% for the proper bubble pressure and surrounding SiC whiskers. And the maximum amount of the plasticizer was about 10wt% to be fitted into the polymer chain of the binder. The matrix prepared by using a non-volatile solvent needed longer time to dry, and its pore size was smaller compared with that of the matrix prepared by using volatile solvent. The small pore size resulted in decrease of the overall pore volume. The ionic conductivity in the condition of the same thickness was decreased due to decrease of phosphoric acid absorbancy. As the internal resistance of the electrolyte increased, the fuel cell performance slightly decreased.

  • The effect of various parameters, such as temperature, current density and operating valtage on the performance of phosphoric acid fuel cell stack was studied by using numerical analysis. The utilization ratio of reaction gas, inlet condition of reaction air and cooling air, inlet condition of cooling air flow latin were changed regularly, The results showed good agreements with the existing results and experimental ones.

  • Materials retaining electrolyte of a phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) have been prepared with SiC powder to SiC whisker mixing ratios of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 0:1 by a tape casting method. When 3wt% dispersant (sorbitan monooleate) is added to a matrix, the porosity of the matrix decreases a little while the bubble pressure and area of the matrix increase remarkably in comparison with no dispersant content. Effect of the electrolyte resistance and the polarization resistance on perfomance of a PAFC has been investigated using A.C. impedance spectroscopy. With the increase of whisker content, the electrolyte resistance decreases due to the increase of porosity and acid absorbancy, and the polarization resistance increases due to the increase of surface roughness. The polarization resistance affects current density predominantly at the higher potential than 0.7V becuase the polarization resistance is considrably larger than the electrolyte resistance. Both the electrolyte resistance and the polarization resistance affect current density near 0.7V of the fuel cell operating potential because they have similar values. The electrolyte resistance affects current density predominantly at the lower potential than the fuel cell operating potential because the electrolyte resistance is larger than the polarization resistance.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of various parameters, such as temperature, mean current density and voltage on the performance of phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) by numerical analysis. Two types of flow passages, which are Z-parallel type and Z-counter type, are evaluated to obtain the best current density and temperature distribution. Parametric studies and sensitivity analysis of the PAFC system's operation in single cell are accomplished. A steady state simulation of the entire system is developed using nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The finite difference method and trial and error procedures are used to obtain a solution.

  • 연료전지 발전기술은 에너지 절약 및 환경보호 측면에서의 우수한 특성으로 인해 새로운 발전기술로서 평가되고 있다. 여러가지 연료전지 기술중 인산형 연료전지는 기술적으로 가장 성숙되어 있는 상태이며, 상용화를 눈앞에 두고 있다. 본 고에서는 인산형 연료전지에 대한 최근의 기술동향 및 상용화 노력을 소개하고자 한다. 미국과 일본의 개발노력 및 기술상태를 비교 분석하였으며, 향후 기술 개발 방향 등에 대해서도 언급하고자 한다.

Phosphoric Acid-doped SDF-F/poly(VI-co-MPS)/PTFE Membrane for a High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

  • Sulfonated poly(fluorinated arylene ether)s (SDF-F)/poly[(N-vinylimidazole)-co-(3-methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane)] (poly(VI-co-MPS))/poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) is prepared for a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The reaction of the membrane with phosphoric acid forms silicate phosphor, as a chemically bound proton carrier, in the membrane. Thus-formed silicate phosphor, nitrogen in the imidazole ring, and physically bound phosphoric acid act as proton carriers in the membrane. The physico-chemical and electrochemical properties of the membrane are investigated by various analytical tools. The phosphoric acid uptake and proton conductivity of the SDF-F/poly(VI-co-MPS)/PTFE membrane are higher than those of SDF-F/PVI/PTFE. The power densities of cells with SDF-F/poly(VI-co-MPS)/PTFE membranes at 0.6 V are 286, 302, and 320 mW $cm^{-2}$ at 150, 170, and 190 $^{\circ}C$, respectively. Overall, the SDFF/poly(VI-co-MPS)/PTFE membrane is one of the candidates for anhydrous HT-PEMFCs with enhanced mechanical strength and improved cell performance.

  • Exergetic and thermoeconomic analysis were performed for a 200kW Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell(PAFC) plant which offers many advantage for cogeneration in the aspect of high electrical efficiency and low emission. This analytical study was based on the data obtained by in-field measurement of PC25 fuel cell plant to find whether this system is viable economically. For 100% load condition, the electrical efficiency and the unit cost of electricity are about 45% and 0.032 $/kWh respectively, which turn out to be much better than those for the 1000kW gas turbine cogeneration plant. Further, at lower loads, the unit costs of electricity and hot water increase slightly and consequently more economic operation is possible at any loads.
