  • To develop new hole-blocking materials for phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs), 5,6-dihydro-2,9-diisopropyl-4,7-diphenyl[1,10]phenanthroline (1) and 5,6-dihydro-2,9-diisopropyl-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-7-phenyl[1,10]phenanthroline (2) were synthesized. While the absorption spectrum of 1 is very similar to that of 2, the photoluminescence spectrum of 1 has the feature of the narrower and blue-shifted blueviolet emission at the peak of 356 nm compared to that of 2. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels of 1 and 2 were estimated from the measurement of cyclic voltammetry, and 1 has the appropriate levels for a holeblocking layer (HBL). The use of 1 as a HBL in a green PhOLED led to good efficiency of 23.6 cd/A at 4.4 mA/$cm^2$.

  • Electrophosphorescent light emitting diodes (LEDs) using phosphorescent dyes as triplet emitter, which incorporate a heavy metal atom to mix singlet and triplet states by the strong spin-orbit coupling, can achieve the theoretically $100\%$ internal quantum efficiency. In this paper, we report on the performance and the energy transfer mechanism of polymer based highly efficient electrophosphorescent LEDs. The effect of phase separation and aggregation to the energy transfer between polymer hosts and phosphorescent guests and performance of polymer electrophosphorescent LEDs were investigated. Finally, the effect of introducing substitute group and ligand modification of phosphorescent dyes on optical and electrical properties are reported.

  • A host material containing tetraphenylsilane, 9-(4-triphenylsilanyl-(1,1'4,1")-terphenyl-4"-yl)-9H-cabazole (TSTC), was synthesized for green phosphorescent organic emitting diodes. $Ir(ppy)_3$ based OLEDs using TSTC host and DTBT (2,4-diphenyl-6-(4'yl)-1,3,5-triazine) hole blocking layer (HBL) showed the maximum external quantum efficiency of 19.8 %, the power efficiency of 59.4 lm and high operational stability with a half lifetime of 160,000 h at an initial luminance of $100\;cd/m^2$.

  • Three systems such as CaS, BaS and ZnS are used as ground materials and transition elements such as Bi, Cu, Ag and Ni are used as activators to preared phosphorescent materials of strong after-grow intensity. These three systems in which we have 31 kinds of different composition samples are heated at given temperatures in the electrical furnace and are cooled in the air in order to crystallize them. In the case of BaS system, the mixture of CaO and purified S is better than the other kinds of calcium compound as the ground materials to crystallize phosphors. In BaS system, the mixture of BaCO$_{3}$ and purified S, in ZnS system ZnS respectively is the most proper ground material to prepare such a strong after-grow intensified phosphors. In a given range, the higher in temperature and the longer time of heating, the better phosphors we obtain.

  • We have demonstrated highly efficient WOLED with two separated emissive layers using a blue fluorescent dye and a red phosphorescent dye. The maximum luminous efficiency of the device was 11.2 cd/A at $20\;mA/cm^2$ and $CIE_{x,y}$ coordinates varied from (x = 0.33, y = 0.37) at 6V to (x = 0.25, y = 0.33) at 14V.

  • Intramolecular energy transfer in heteroleptic red phosphorescent dopant materials with mixed ligand units in one molecule was studied. 1-phenylisoquinoline(piq) and phenylpyridine(ppy) moieties were introduced as ligands for Ir based phosphorescent dopants and light emission mechanism was investigated. Intramolecular energy transfer from ppy ligand to piq ligand resulted in pure red emission without any green emission from ppy. Current efficiency of red devices was improved from 4 cd/A to 4.8 cd/A by using mixed ligand structures and deposition temperature of red dopant could be lowered by introducing ppy ligand.

  • Doping a small amount of a phosphorescent dye into an organic light-emitting diodes(OLED) can lead to a significant improvement in the device properties. The fluorescent host materials like TAZ, CBP have been used, but have a problem of rapid decay of efficiency at high current densities. To alleviate this problem, phosphorescent host was introduced. The whole configuration of OELD fabricated was ITO/a-NPD(50nm)/Zn $cluster:Ir(ppy)_{3}(30nm)/BCP{(10nm)/Alq_{3}(20nm)$ /Al:Li. The OLED showed high luminance (> 50,000 $cd/m^{2}$ ) and external efficiency(5.7%). At higher current densities, rapid decay of external quantum efficiency or host emission, which was frequently observed in the fluorescent host system, were not observed.

  • We have investigated organic light-emitting devices by doping phosphorescent orange and fluorescent blue emitters into the separate layers of single host. The electroluminescence spectra and current efficiency were strongly dependent on the location of each doped layers. The luminance-voltage (L-V) characteristics of the device2 (ITO/Hole Transport Layer/Orange Phosphorescent emissive layer/Blue Fluorescent emissive layer/Electron Transport Layer/liF/Al) showed the maximum current efficiency of 19.5 cd/A.

  • We have developed blue-emitting phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) using 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) and tris (8-quinolinolato)aluminum ($Alq_3$) electron transport layers. As blue dopant and host materials, bis[(4,6-di-fluorophenyl)-pyridinate-N,C2']picolinate (FIrpic) and N,N'-dicarbazolyl-3,5-benzene (mCP) were used, respectively. The driving voltage, current efficiency and emission characteristics of devices were investigated. While the driving voltage was about $1{\sim}2$ V lower in the device with an $Alq_3$ layer, the current efficiency was about 66 % higher in the device with BCP electron transport layer. the blue phosphorescent OLED with BCP layer exhibited higher purity of color, resulting from a relatively weak electroluminescence intensity at 500 nm.

  • High-efficiency red phosphorescent OLEDs employing a novel red emitter and a multifunctional oligofluorene host are reported. With qazIr(acac) as the red phosphorescent dopant, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 19% and maximum power efficiency of 11 lm/W are achieved. In addition, single layer devices using such host and dopant materials have efficiencies up to 13%.
