Melhylovorus sp. strain SS1 grown on methanol was found to show activities of key enzymes of the linear route, $NAD^+$-linked formaldehyde and formate dehydrogenases, and the cyclic route, hexulose-6-phosphate synthase, glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, for formaldehyde oxidation. The activities of the cyclic route enzymes were higher than those of the linear route enzymes. The bacterium also exhibited activities of the key enzymes of the ribulose monophosphate and Entner-Doudoroff pathways and transaldolase involved in the formaldehyde assimilation and the enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of extracellular polysaccharide. Cells grown in the presence of 2.3 mM ammonium sulfate were higher in the productivity of extracellular polysaccharide, but lower in the growth yield, than those grown in the presence 7.6 mM ammonium sulfate. The activities of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase, and UDP-pyrophosphorylase in cells grown under nitrogen-limited condition were higher, but that of 6-phosphogluconate dehydratase/2-keto-3-deoxy-6-phosphogluconate aldolase was lower, than those in cells grown in the presence of sufficient amount of nitrogen source.
In cold water irrigation, some growth and yield were decreased by heavy application of nitrogen but in-creased by heavy application of phosphate, potassium and silicate. Among growth characters, number of spikelets per panicle and grain filling ratio were affected significantly. Cold damage in number of spikelets, spikelet sterility and degeneration of spikelet and branch could be reduced by increasing application amount of phosphate, potassium and in particular silicate. Number of spikelets per branch was closely related with number of spikelets per secondary branches. Number of abortive grains and immature grains had negative correlations with yield and could be reduced by heavy application of phosphate, potassium and silicate. Heavy nitrogen application led to high total nitrogen content and restrained the uptake of phosphate, potassium and silicate. However, adverse results were showed by heavy application of phosphate, potassium and silicate. Inorganic element contents in branches were lower than those in leaf blades, but higher than those in chaff. Branches showed little differences in inorganic element contents between heading stage and maturing stage. Inorganic element contents in branches were considered to be influenced by those in leaf blades and to affect those in chaff. Some growth characters related to source and sink, such as degeneration of branches and spike-lets, sterility ratio, ripening ratio, and yield had closer relationship with nutrient contents in branches than those in leaf blades and chaff. The results demonstrated that the rachis branch not only was a transport pathway of nutrient but also would play an important role in accumulating substances in panicles.
The effects of nitrogen, phosphate in modified B5 medium and cell immobilization on cell growth and taxol production were investigated using cell cultures of Taxus cuspidata. The ratio of nitrate to ammonium was found to be an important parameter. The ratio of 1 increased taxol production 10-fold, compared to the original ratio of 20 in modified B5 medium. Reducing phosphate concentration inhibited cell growth, but increased taxol production noticeably. Immobilized cells produced a taxol concentration of ${\sim}120\;g/l$
For the preliminary experiments of mass Production of tobacco cells in tank culture, the effects of nutritional conditions on the growth of suspended cells were investigated ; 1. The tobacco cell growth was affected by concentrations of sucrose or inorganic phosphate, type of nitrogen source, and plant hormone, especially 2, 4-D. 2. The optimum level of sucrose concentration was 3% and the level of inorganic phosphate was 0.3mg /ml, which was about twice as high as the level of Linsmaier - Skoog medium. 3. The best growth was observed when the ratio of nitrate nitrogen to ammonium nitrogen was 2 : 1, where the total nitrogen content was equal to that of nitrogen source. 4. To find out the mechanism of promotive effects of 214-D and inorganic phosphate on the tobacco cell growth, the respiration and metabolism of $^{14}\textrm{C}$-91ucose were investigated. Addition of 2, 4 -D in culture medium increased if 2, 4-D (0.2ppm )was added to medium or the level of inorganic Phosphate was raised 2.5 times as high as standard. In cultures with high inorganic phosphate and 2, 4-D, the absorbed 14C-glucose was converted to amino acids and organic acids rather than remained as sugars.

Struvite precipitation has been proven to be an effective method in removing and recovering ammonia nitrogen (N) and phosphate phosphorus (P) from wastewater. In this study, effects of pH, molar ratios and pre-treatment of effluent of anaerobically digested swine wastewater were investigated to improve struvite crystallization. The magnesium : ammonium : phosphate ratio of 1.2 : 1.0 : 1.0 was found to be optimal, yet the molar ratio in the wastewater was 1 : 74.9 : 1.8. From the analysis, the optimum pH was between 8.0 and 9.0 for maximal phosphate P release and from 8.0 to 10.0 for maximal ammonia N and phosphate P removal from real wastewater. Analysis from Visual MINTEQ predicted the pH range of 7-11 for ammonia N and phosphate P removal and recovery as struvite. For pre-treatment, microwave pre-treatment was ineffective for phosphate P release but ultrasound pre-treatment showed up to 77.4% phosphate P release at 1,000 kJ/L of energy dose. Precipitates analysis showed that phosphorus and magnesium in the collected precipitate had almost same values as theoretical values, but the ammonia content was less than the theoretical value.
Two phosphate solubilizing Pantoea strains (P. agglomerans and P. rodasii) were employed in elucidating their phosphate solubilizing potential under different carbon and nitrogen sources, pH, temperature and salt conditions. Plant growth promoting characteristics such as ACC deaminase activity, indole acetic acid (IAA), HCN, ammonia, and siderophore production of the two strains were assessed in vitro. Potential applicability of the strains as bio-inoculants was also evaluated in pot experiments conducted under green house conditions. Phosphate solubilization measured as the amount of phosphorous released into the medium was recorded as 810 and $788{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ respectively by P. agglomerans and P. rodasii. Glucose at the rate of 2% was found be the best carbon source, while $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ was the best nitrogen source for both strains. Despite a slight decrease in phosphate solubilization observed at higher temperature, pH and salt concentrations, both strains could withstand against a range of temperature ($30-35^{\circ}C$), pH (7-9) and the presence of NaCl (up to 5%) without much compromising the phosphate solubilization. Different plant growth promoting traits (ACC deaminase activity, IAA, HCN, ammonia, and siderophore production) of the strains and their ability to promote the growth of green gram seedlings indicate that both strains possess high potential to be used as bio-inoculants.
Phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms were isolated from soil around Kyungnam and Kyungbook regions using potato dextrose agar-calcium phosphate medium. A fungus with the greatest phosphate-solubilizing activity was selected and identified to Aspergillus sp. PS-104, based on the morphological characteristics of conidiophore and conidia; unbranching type of conidiophore, terminally swelling of conidiophore and septate of mycelium, in malt extract agar and potato dextrose agar media. The optimum temperature and initial pH to solubilize rock phosphate in potato dextrose broth-rock phosphate medium were $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0, respectively. In these optimum conditions, phosphate-solubilizing activities of Aspergillus sp. PS-104 against four twos of insoluble phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, aluminium phosphate, hydroxyapatite and rock phosphate, were quantitatively determined. As result, the maximum phosphate-solubilizing activity was obtained with tricalcium-phosphate (1,900 ppm) while minimum activity was obtained with hydroxyapatite (320 ppm). Futhermore, phosphate-solubilizing activity of Aspergillus sp. PS-104 was found higher when treated with nitrates as compared to the ammonium salts as a nitrogen sources.

In this study, we analyzed the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate dependant on the column depths using various absorbents such as zeolite silica sand, and activated carbon through the column test. In addition, we analyzed electrochemical adsorption behaviors of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate through the quantum mechanical calculation based on density functional theory calculation. Experimental results represent the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate are zeolite > activated carbon > silica sand, and activated carbon > zeolite > silica sand, respectively. Zeolite shows high adsorption property for ammonia nitrogen over 90%, regardless of the column depth, while activated carbon exhibits high adsorption property for both ammonia nitrogen and phosphate as the column depth for filter media increases. Theoretical findings using DFT calculation for the adsorption behaviors of adsorbents (activated carbon and silica sand) and nutrients ($PO_4{^{3-}}$, $NH_4{^{+}}$) show that activated carbon represented narrower HOMO-LUMO band gap with high adsorption energy, and even more favorable environment for electron adsorption than silica sand, which leads to the effective removal of nutrients.
The purpose of this study is to grasp what characterizes the vegetation base of the natural forest as a latent vegetation in the middle region of Korea and thus to offer basic data when improving the vegetation base in the middle region being built or to be built in the future. The findings of this soil section survey show the following: The soil is brown to red color soil group on the whole. In addition, the soil's physical features like soil hardness are rated as high level, which results from the fact that the forest soil exits in its natural form under less influence of stamping. The pH of soil shows a weak acidity, like Korean normal soil. Specific electrical conductance is also rated as middle to high level in accordance with the standards of landscape architecture. The Salix koreensis community and the Pinus rigida community are different from other communities in terms of total nitrogen, available phosphate and exchangeable $K^+$ content. Specifically, the two communities are opposed to each other in terms of total nitrogen and available phosphate, while being similar to each other in terms of available phosphate and exchangeable $K^+$ content. This seems to result from the fact that they are located near each other. In addition, the two communities are characterized by the fact that they are distributed at the altitude mean relatively lowest and in the valley. To sum up, the forest soil around Goesan Gun is of middle level on the whole according to the landscape standards, when judging it in terms of vegetation base. Accordingly, it seems that the construction of the vegetation base around Goesan Gun will not require large investment expenses for soil improvement. Also, it seems that the spatial scope of research is needed to expand the basic data on the construction of the vegetation base for the whole middle region of Korea.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of P fertilization and cutting fkquency without N fertilizer on nutritive value and nitrogen fixation activity of alfalfa. A field experiment was conducted on the experimental farm of Kongju National University at Yesan from 1994 to 1996. The experimental design was a split plot design with two P levels as main plot and two cutting frequencies as the sub-plot. The results obtained are summarized as follows. Available phosphate, exchangeable Ca and Na in the soil were slightly increased with P fertilizer and basal treatment of lime. Average DM yield was 1.5 ton and 1.4 ton in second and third year. There was no significant difference within P level and cutting kquency. The first cut showed higest CP value as cutting times increased the value tend to be lowered. Crude protein content in 3 and 4 cutting regimes were from 16.3 to 16.6% 17.4 to 17.9% respectively, but no significant effect were found among the main and sub-plot. ADF and NDF in 1995 were ranged from 38.2 to 39.9, 45.1 to 58.1% respectively. ADF was 2% more higher in 1996 compared to previous year and NDF was slightly higher in 1996. There was significant difference of ADF between main plot in 1995. .P, Ca, K and Mg of 200kg P level with 3 times cutting treatment in 1995 and 1996 were 0.32 and 0.23, 0.95 and 0.84, 3.24 and 2.87, and 0.36 and 0.26. Significant difference of K and Mg between cutting frequency was observed in 1995. Nitrogen fixing activity of 400kg P fertilizer plots were higher than 200kg P level and 3 times cutting plot also showed higher acetylene reduction activity than that of 4 cutting per year. Phosphate level and cutting frequency treatment of did not significantly affect nitrogen fixation activity.
