  • In order to micropropagate uniform plantlets of Philodendron wend-imbe, the shoot tips were cultured on media supplemented with 0.5-10.0mg/L BA or 0.01-1.0 mg/L thidiazuron (TDZ). The multi-bud clusters from basal part of shoots formed vigorously on media containing 5.0-10.0 mg/L BA or 0.05-0.1 mg/L TDZ. Shoot formation from the bud cluster sections (5-7mm) was achieved favorably on medium with 5.0mg/L BA and 20 g/L sucrose. Lowering of sucrose in medium to 20 g/L was effective for the inhibition of callus growth from basal part of shoots. Growth of shoots and their rooting were favorable on media containing 1.0-2.0 mg/L IBA or 0.1mg/L NAA. The rooted plantlets were acclimatizated effectively in soil mixed with perlite 1: peat moss 1 or peat moss alone.

  • The purification ability of indoor plants for volatile organic compounds was investigated. Philodendron selloum and Spathiphyllum sp. were tested for removal of toluene and trichloroethylene in the artificially contaminated reactor under laboratory conditions. Each plant was placed in right side of the reactor and the TCE and toluene concentration change with time were monitored. In the reactor with Philodendron, the TCE concentrations of left and right sides were compared to examine the removal effects by plant. In the reactor with Spathiphyllum, air was circulated before sampling, and thus average removal effects by plants on target VOC were observed. Both plants showed clear effects on removal of VOCs from contaminated indoor air. The removal efficiency of Philodendron and Spathiphyllum were similar and showed 30 - 46% and 31 - 47% of purification effects, respectively. The results of this study showed that air purification using plants is an effective means of reduction on indoor VOCs concentration level and reduce related health risk though, supplementary purifying aids or proper ventilation were also suggested.

  • In order to micropropagate uniform plantlets of Philodendron cannifolium in vitro, the shoot tips were cultured on MS media supplemented with $0.5{\sim}10.0$ mg/L BA or $0.05{\sim}0.1$ mg/L thidiazuron(TDZ). The adventitious multi-bud clusters from basal part of shoots were formed on MS media containing $2.0{\sim}5.0$ mg/L BA or $0.05{\sim}0.1$ mg/L TDZ. But the shoots grown on MS media with TDZ showed necrosis by the lack of chlorophyll. The adventitious multi-bus clusters were cut into $5{\sim}7$ mm sections and cultured on MS media containing BA and TDZ for shoot proliferation. Shoots were proliferated vigorously on MS medium supplemented with $1.0{\sim}3.0$ mg/L BA with up to 30 shoots. But abnormally swollen hard calli were formed from basal parts of shoots on MS media with TDZ and high concentration of BA(10.0 mg/L). The proliferated shoots on same media also showed necrosis by the lack of chlorophyll. The shoot growth and rooting were favorable on MS media containing $0.5{\sim}2.0$ mg/L IBA. The rooted plantlets were acclimatizated effectively in soil mixed with perlite 1:vermiculite 1 or vermiculite alone. Fifteen mL of liquid medium containing 10 g/L activated charcoal and 30 g/L sucrose were added in same vessels after small shoots were proliferated to stimulate shoot growth and rooting. After 8 weeks in culture, the shoots were dipped into high concentration of IBA solution. and planted in soil mexed with perlite 1:vermiculite 1. The shoot growth and rooting were favorable in dipping treatments of $500{\sim}2,000$ ppm IBA solutions for 10 sec.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the plant growth of various foliage plants affected by the nutrient solution strength. Ficus benjamina, Hedera helix, Philodendron tatei, Rhapis excelsa, Spathiphyllum spp. were used in this experiment. The Sonneveld solution was diluted to 0, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 folds and applied through a subirrigation system. Plant height and width, leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weights of shoots were measured to compare the responses to the different treatments. The required amounts for nutrients were different among the various foliage plants. The growth of Ficus and Philodendron was improved as the nutrient solution strength got higher, but that of Hedera and Spathiphyllum showed the best growth in the lower nutrient solution strength of 1/4 and 1/2 folds. The growth of Rhapis was improved in the nutrient solution strength of 1 fold but the other treatments did not affect on plant growth. N, P, and K were the most important nutrients that had influence on the growth of the foliage plants in this study. There was not an accurate criterion for fertilization and irrigation to each foliage plant. Moreover, the foliage plants grew slowly during the early stage and this period must be shortened for commercial production. Therefore, the experiment was executed to make up these defects. The plants applied with proper strength of Sonneveld solution grew faster and had better quality.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the plant growth of various foliage plants affected by the amount of nitrogen application. There was not an accurate criterion for fertilization to each foliage plant. Moreover, the foliage plants grow slowly during the early stage and this period must be shortened for commercial production. Ficus benjamina, Hedera helix, Philodendron tatei, Rhapis excelsa, and Spathiphyllum spp. were used in this experiment. Nutrient nitrogen concentrations were 120, 150, 180, and $210mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ (N1, N2, N3, N4) and they were based on the Sonneveld solution. Plant height and width, leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weights of shoots were measured for 8 weeks to compare the responses to the different treatments. The nitrogen contents of various plant parts were also analyzed. The growth of Ficus and Hedera was improved at the N1 treatment and that of Philodendron, Rhapis and Spathiphyllum at N4 treatment. The required amounts for nitrogen nutrients were different among the various foliage plants. The nitrogen treatments had no effects on SPAD values and there were no correlations between nitrogen treatments and nitrogen contents of plant parts. Therefore, the various foliage plants should supply with each proper nitrogen treatments to grow faster with better quality. In this case, the plant growth played a more important role than nitrogen levels of plant parts in deciding the proper nitrogen levels for each foliage plant.
