  • Recently, our circumstances are threatened by an accident that leakage of under ground storage tank and illegal dumping of synthetic organic compounds at chemical plants and many treatment methods, Activated carbon adsorption, Ozonization, Membrane filtration and Photocatalystic oxidation, are developed to remove such a synthetic organic compounds. And it has reported that Activated carbon adsorption have a great removal efficiency to nondegradable matters and organic compounds which have a high molecular weight. Comparing with other adsorbents, Activated carbon adsorption have a worse efficiency when ad desorption speed is low. Thus improved type of adsorbents was invented and one of those is Activated Carbon Filter. The purpose of this study was getting information about adsorption characteristic phenol which can be applied Activated Carbon Fiber and Granular Activated Carbon. In detail, With comparing removal characteristics of phenol in the presence Humic Acid using Activated Carbon Fiber(ACF) and Granular Activated. Carbon(GAC), it is to certify an effective application of Activated Carbon Fiber. At the range of this study, Batch test, Isotherm adsorption test and Factorial analysis, following conclusion were obtained from the results of this study. Batch test was carried to know time of adsorption equilibrium. In this study about time of adsorption equilibrium by ACF was faster than GAC's, for developed micropore of ACF. From the result of phenol adsorption test, High removal rate of adsorption is shown at pH 5. The result of lsotherm adsorption test, it has represented that the Freundlich's isotherm is most suitable one in others, that a ACF's adsorption capacity is more excellent than GAC's. Adsorption of phenol exiting humic acid is decreased getting raised humic acid concentration. Since ACF's micropore is developed at this time, an effect of high molecular humic acid is lower. Factorial analysis was carried to know about Main effect which was injection dosage of adsorbent in the range of this study.

  • This study investigated the degradation characteristics and biodegradability of phenol, refractory organic matters, by injecting MgO and CaO-known to be catalyst materials for the ozonation process-into a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma. MgO and CaO were injected at 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2 g/L, and the pH was not adjusted separately to examine the optimal injection amounts of MgO and CaO. When MgO and CaO were injected, the phenol decomposition rate was increased, and the reaction time was found to decrease by 2.1 to 2.6 times. In addition, during CaO injection, intermediate products combined with Ca2+ to cause precipitation, which increased the COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal rate by approximately 2.4 times. The biodegradability of plasma treated water increased with increase in the phenol decomposition rate and increased as the amount of the generated intermediate products increased. The biodegradability was the highest in the plasma reaction with MgO injection as compared to when the DBD plasma pH was adjusted. Thus, it was found that a DBD plasma can degrade non-biodegradable phenols and increase biodegradability.

  • 1. Introduction : Low molecular harmful organics such as 1-naphthol and phenol are widely used in industries, and pose serious environmental problems. Wastewater containing low molecular harmful organics may be ejected from various sources including metal-plating industries, circuit-board manufacturing process, photographic and photo-processing industries, refineries and metal-tailing leachate. The pollution of nation harbors, waterways and ground water resources with these organics has reached critical portions, and might also give hazardous influence on human health. Micellar enhanced ultrafiltration(MEUF) is a recently developed process to remove dissolved organics and/or heavy metals present in small or trace quantities from aqueous solution. In this system, the fatal defect is leakage of surfactants especially at low concentration below CMC(critical micelle concentration), which becomes a secondary pollution. Our group proposed to use biosurfactant and polymeric micelle to solve problems mentioned above. In this study we investigated a modified MEUF using PEO-PPO-PEO (polyethyleneoxide-polypropyleneoxide-polyethyleneoxide) block copolymers for the removal of organic solutes such as 1-naphthol and phenol from aqueous wastewater. We proposed PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymers as new surfactants for forming micelles in MEUF, and investigated the solubilization characteristics and efficiency for the removal of 1-naphthol and phenol. PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymers are, environmentally mild and safe as biosurfactants.

  • The amount of phenol and NaOH for the colorimetric determination of ammonia in Korean standard methods (KSM) is found to be highly excessive compared to the standard methods of several other countries. The absorbance of indophenol formed by the Berthelot reaction for ammonia analysis was measured under the various reaction conditions classified in experiment groups 1, 2, 3, 4 and KSM and American standards methods (ASM), and the relationships between the absorbance of indophenol and concentration of ammonia were compared. The amount of phenol can be reduced to 10 g (current 25 g in KSM) and NaOH can be reduced to 1.76 g (current 11 g in KSM) for the preparation of 200 mL phenate solution, and the absorbance sensitivity increased. The concentration of the phenol and NaOH correlatively affect the pH of the solution, which is a critical variable in achieving the maximum sensitivity and rapid and stable color development.

  • A bacterium DGUM 2011 has been selected from various samples of industrial wastewater and soil. Based on the morphological and physiological characteristics, the isolate DGUM 2011 was identified as Rhodococcus sp. and named as Rhodococcus sp. DGUM 2011. The optimal temperature and pH for the cell growth of Rhodococcus sp. DGUM 2011 were 37$\circ$C and 7.6, respectively. When phenol was added to the minimal media as a sole source of carbon and energy, the concentrations of maximum and optimum for cell growth was 0.10% and 0.08%, respectively. When 0.05% phenol was given in the minimal media, Rhodococcus sp. DGUM 2011 completely utilize it within 24 hrs. The isolate could utilize benzoic acid, p-hydroxybenzoate, p-cresol, tyrosine and phloroglucinol. The isolate possessed both catechol 1,2-dioxygenase and 2,3-dioxygenase activity. However, the activity of catechol 1,2-dioxygenase was much higher than that of 2,3-dioxygenase, which suggests that the isolate might degrade phenol via both ortho- and meta-cleavage, mainly via ortho-cleavage.

  • More than 8 millions of chemical have been used for human activities and lots of chemicals can not be degraded by microbial activities in this world. To show the biodegradability of a chemical, biodegradability index (B.I.) is suggested using aerobic biodegradability by $BOD_5$/COD, anaerobic biodegradability by methane potential (M.P.) and toxicity by the luminiscent bacteria. In this study, PVA (polyvinyl alcohol), HEC (hydroxy ethyl cellulose), 2,4,6-TCP (tri-chloro phenol) and 2,4-DCP (di-chloro phenol) are used for test chemicals. Though they show little toxicity, PAV and HEC have low B.I. because they are polymers having high molecular weight. That means that there are no bacteria that has enzyme to degrade polymer molecules. Also, anaerobic treatment is suggested better than aerobic treatment from B.I. 2,4,6-TCP and 2,4-DCP show high toxicity and have low B.I. Their low biodegradabilities seem to be originated from their toxicities. If B.I. is used in wastewater treatment, better treatment process can be suggested and finally it can lead our society to make more environment-friendly chemicals.

  • Phenol and other phenolic compounds are common constituents of aqueous effluents from processes such as polymeric resin production, oil refining and cokeing plants. Phenol is a both toxic and lethal of fish at relatively low concentrations e.g. 5-25 mg/L and imparts objectionable tastes to drinking water at far lower concentration. Therefore, the treatment of phenol effluent is important. Among the various techniques of phenol wastewater treatment, microbial teratment is a popular process. The breakdown of phenols by microorganisms has recived considerable attention, because of its biochemical interest and its industrial importance in effluent treatment. This research was performed to investigate the dynamics of microbial community, biofilm growth and the comparison of phenol removal efficiency by RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor) using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT The experiment was carried out at rotating speed of 10ppm and hydraulic retention time of 7 hours. As time passed, phenol removal efficiency was gained highly. The RBC using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT completely degraded 15 mM.

  • This study is an experimental research on the treatment of phenolic wastes by Rotating Biological Contactors(RBC). The objective of this study is to determine the optimum range of influent phenol concentration and organic loading rate. Organic removal rates were analyzed with increasing organic loading and influent phenol concentration, together with the observation of microorganism. Biomass, SCOD, and phenol concentration were measured under the steady state after a step change of influent phenol concentration. As the result, at the phenol concentration less then 98.8 mg/L there were no evidence of substrate inhibition. As the results, organic removal rates in each stage at various organic loading, were decreased with increasing phenol concentration. First order kinetic was observed on the removal of SCOD for which phenol concentration is within the range of substrate inhibition. And also, microorganisms were changed with influent phenol concentration. Namely, at low influent phenol concentration, thin biofilm with filamentous growth was produced. To the contrary, thick biofilm with nonfilamentous growth was produced at high influent phenol concentration.

  • Cokes wastewater is one of the most toxic industrial effluents since it contains high concentrations of pollutants, such as phenol, ammonia, thiocyanate and cyanides. Although biological pre-denitrification process has been used to treat this wastewater in Korea, unexpected failure in nitrogen removal occasionally occurs during summer season. In this study, therefore, we examined inhibitory effects of phenol, ammonia, thiocyanate, ferric cyanide and free cyanide on biological denitrification according to temperature variation ($20{\sim}38^{\circ}C$). Batch experiments showed that denitrification rate was faster in summer ($38^{\circ}C$) than other seasons, and removal rates of pollutants increased with increasing temperature. Phenol, ammonia, thiocyanate and ferric cyanide did not inhibit denitrification even at its high concentration (200 mg/L). However free cyanide above 0.5 mg/L seriously inhibited the bilolgical denitrification reaction. Inhibitory effect of these pollutants was reduced with increasing temperature.

  • In recent years, the amount and number of synthetic organic compounds(SOCs) discharged from various industries has been increasing. Granular activated carbon(GAC) adsorption is one of the best available technology to remove SOCs from water supplies and wastewater. In this paper competitive adsorption for binary mixture of 4-nitrophenol and phenol on reverse stratified tapered adsorber(RSTA) using GAC was studied. Two isotherm experiments were conducted, one for phenol and the other for 4-nitrophenol. The phenol data of binary mixture isotherm were not fitted to Freundlich isotherm. The competitive adsorption increased significantly with decreasing carbon dose and increasing adsorbate concentration. The RSTA was found to provide an increase in breakthrough time when decreasing flow rate, increasing angle and injection layers. The performance enhancement provided by RSTA can be exploited in separation and in the purification of fluids.
