Objective : Reflux esophagitis is a disease caused by the reflux of gastric acid and inflammation due to unstable gastroesophageal sphincter. The aim of the present study was to clarify the effect of Phellodendri Cortex (PC) on chronic reflux esophagitis (CRE) in rats. Methods : The anti-oxidant activity of PC was measured by total polyphenol, total flavonoid contents, 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and 2, 2'-azinobis-3-ethyl-enzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity. A CRE was established surgically in SD rats. And then CRE rats were treated with water or PC 200 mg/kg body weight for 14 days. Besides, the anti-oxidant and inflammatory protein levels were evaluated using western blotting. Results : PC reduced esophagus tissues injury. The total polyphenol (36.05 ± 0.25 mg/g) and total flavonoid (72.90 ± 0.61 mg/g) of PC showed a high content. PC strongly reduced radical scavenging activities (DPPH IC50 43.58 ± 1.54 ㎍/㎖; ABTS IC50 36.75 ± 0.35 ㎍/㎖). Moreover, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and peroxynitrite (ONOO-) levels in serum, the protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthases (iNOS) were significantly reduced. In addition, the protein expression of NADPH oxidases related to oxidative stress were significantly reduced in PC compared to CRE control. PC effectively reduced inflammatory factors including, TNF-α, and IL-6 via NF-κBp65 inactivation through the inhibition of p-IκBα and increased anti-oxidant enzyme such as HO-1, SOD, catalase, and GPx-1/2 via Nrf2 activation. Conclusions : Taken together, these results show that PC can alleviate the esophageal mucosal ulcer though the inhibition of NF-κB inflammatory and the enhancement of Nrf2 anti-oxidant pathway.

Vibriocidal GOCHUJANG was manufactured using extract of natural products and green tea. Antioxidative capacity of natural products and combination of natural products was measured with Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) system value. Inhibitory ability of vibriocidal GOCHUJANG was compared with Inhibition Zone Diameter (IZD) values. Phellodendri cortex, Schizandrae fructus, Theae folium, Scutellaria baicalensis george and Acanthodanacis cortex and combination of these natural products were showed higher antioxidant capacity and inhibitory effect against V. para-haemolyticus. Two kinds of combinations, A combination was composed of Phellodendri cortex, Schizandrae fructus, Theae folium, Scutellaria baicalensis george, and B combination was consisted of Acanthodanacis cortex and A combination, were presented higher inhibition ratio with IZD values as $1.57\pm0.0051$ and $1.56\pm0.0071$, respectively. Vibriocidal GOCHUJANG was prepared based on A and B combination with their higher IZD Value as $1.76\pm0.0103$ and $1.79\pm0.0103$, respectively. When vinegar was added to A and B based GOCHUJANG, their IZD value was more higher as $2.15\pm0.0071$ and $2.44\pm0.0086$, respectively B combination based GOCHUJANG was exhibited higher inhibitory effect than A based GOCHUJANG. Combination of natural products was more important process for increasing vibriocidal effect. But addition of soybean malt or chitosan or a garlic into A or B combined GOCHUJANG, no different effect was exhibited.

Objectives: The goal of this project was to measure the antibacterial effectiveness of Hwangryunhaedok-tang (barberry root decoction for detoxification) and its constituents. All of the active ingredients including the final product were prepared using high-pressure sterilization for use as medicinal eye drops. The varying forms of Hwangryunhaedok-tang (barberry root decoction for detoxification) were used to treat Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterococcus faecalis which are found in keratitis. Methods: The antibacterial effect was measured by observing the presence or absence of antimicrobial activity when treated with varying concentrations of Hwangryunhaedok-tang extract. The tests were performed using a dosage of $70{\mu}l$ dosages of 100%, 50%, 10% and 1% the extracted solution by the minimum growth inhibitory concentration measurement. Antimicrobial activity was measured by examining the correlation between dosage strength and bacterial activity from $70{\mu}l$ to $10{\mu}l$ at the same concentration. Results: 1. Hwangryunhaedok-tang (barberry root decoction for detoxification), Phellodendri Cortex, and gardenia didn't show any antimicrobial effects against S. aureus, S. epidermidis, or E. faecalis. 2. Barberry root showed antimicrobial effects against S. aureus and S. epidermidis depending on the levels of concentration but didn't show any antimicrobial effects against E. faecalis. 3. Skullcap showed antimicrobial effects against S. aureus and S. epidermidis when a dosage of 100% extract $70{\mu}l$ was used. However, did not show any antimicrobial effects at all against E. faecalis. Conclusions: Hwangryunhaedok-tang (barberry root decoction for detoxification) and its constituents such as barberry root, phellodendri cortex, skullcap, and gardenia, can be used as an alternative to antibiotic medicinal eye drops to treat keratitis. However, further research on effective uses of and efficient extraction methods are needed.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends on tinea pedis in studies of Korean medicine.Methods : We searched papers using NDSL, KISS, RISS and KTKP(Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal). The first search used the keyword "Tinea pedis" in NDSL, KISS, RISS and KTKP. Used searching duration was not specified.Results : Studies found in NDSL, KISS and RISS were 122 and 118 studies were excluded. Studies found in KTKP were five papers and four studies of them were excluded. Finally five studies were selected and analyzed. Two studies of five selected ones were experimental researches and three studies were clinical researches. Among 2 researches of experimental researches, one of them was about antifungal efficacy of herbal medicines and ethahol extract of the mixture of Sophorae Subprostratae Radix, Aconiti Radix and Hibisci Syriaci Cortex and hot water extract of Phellodendri Cortex were effective. The other was about antifungal effect of the medicinal herb extraction method and vinegar extract was effective. Among 3 researches of clinical researches, there were one clinical study and two case studies. Functional soap containing herbal medicines and bee venom therapy were effective.Conclusions : As we looked for five researches, which were two experimental studies, one clinical study and two case studies. It is possible to treat tinea pedis with korean medical approach by conclusions of 5 researches. We expect that further researches will be proceeded and following results can be actively used as clinical treatments.
Precipitation was formed during the preparation of decoction from a mixture of Scutellariae Radix and Coptidis Rhizoma or Phellodendri Cortex according to the prescription of Hwang-ryean-hae-dog-tang. Baicalin and berberine were identified in coprecipitated product and these components were the active ingredients of two herbal medicine. The coprecipitated product was very slightly soluble in water and sparingly soluble in ethanol. The stoichiometric ratio of baicalin and berberine was found to be 1:1. The lipid-water partition coefficients of coprecipitated product were increased more than baicalin and berberine in chloroform, but were decreased in other organic solvents. The content of baicalin and berberine in coprecipitated product, determined by HPLC, were 23.08% and 26.75%, but the content of active ingredients in supernatant were 0.66% and 0.26%, respectively. The dissolution profile of baicalin of coprecipitated product was increased more than extract of Scutellariae Radix in artificial gastric juice, but was decreased in artificial intestinal juice. The dissolution rate of berberine of coprecipitated product was lower than extract of Coptidis Rhizoma in artificial gastric juice and intestinal juice commonly.

Twenty kinds of medicinal herbs were extracted by water and 95% ethanol and then antimicrobial activity of the extracts was investigated against various kinds of microorganisms. Water extracts of Gardeniae fructus (Gardenia jasminoides), Lycii fructus (Lycium chinense) and Schizandrae fructus (Schizandra chinensis) showed inhibitory effects on the growth of most of the bacteria. In the case of ethanol extracts, the 3 kinds of the samples such as Gardeniae fructus, Schizandrae fructus and Lithospermi radix (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) showed inhibitory effects on the growth of almost all bacteria. In particular, ethanol extract from Phellodendri cortex (Phellodendron amurense) showed the best inhibitory effect on the growth of S. aureus in the concentration of 0.01%. By the way, inhibitory effects of water extracts from these medicinal herbs were not so good on the growth of fungi but those of ethanol extracts were better and ethanol extracts of Phellodendri cortex showed best. Antimicrobial activity was variable according to the used extracting solvent. For example, inhibitory effets of ethanol ext-racts were $2{\sim}100$ times better than those of water extracts. Ethanol extract of Lithospermi radix was the most effective not only bactericidal effects but also sensory evaluation tests for tastes.
Precipitation was formed during the preparation of decoction from a mixure of Scutellariae Radix and Coptidis Rhizoma or Phellodendri Cortex according to the prescription of Hwang-ryean-hae-dog-tang. Baicalin and berberine, the active ingredients of the two herbal medicine were identified in coprecipitated product. Pills were prepared using the coprecipitated product and various binders. The dissolution rate of baicalin and berberine from pills was increased in at pH1.2 when acacia or tragacanth was used. The absorption rate of baicalin from the coprecipitated product was faster than that from Scutellaria extract, but the absorption of berberine from CPP was slower in stomach, duodenum and jejunum of rats compared with Coptis extract. The time required for the maximum serum concentration (Cmax) of baicalin and berberine from CPP in mice were 150 and 200 min after oral administration, respectively. The maximum serum concentration of baicalin from CPP in mice was higher than Scutellaria extract, but the concentration of berberine was lower compared with Coptis extract. The minimum inhibitory concentration of CPP was below $50\;{\mu}g/ml$ against gram positive bacteria, and was higher than that against gram negative bacteria. The antibacterial activity of CPP was lower than that of herberine, but was more potent than Scutellaria extract. It was found that the inhibition rates of growth by CPP against S. epidermidis, K. pneumoniae, B. cereus and S.aureus were 60.0, 51.1, 45.4 and 39.9%, respectively.
Objectives : The water extract of Hwangnyeonhaedok-tang (HHT), composed of the Scutellariae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma, Phellodendri Cortex and Gardeniae Fructus has been traditionally used to treat fever, inflammation, gastritis and hypertension in east asia. However, little is known about the ameliorative effects of HHT on atopic dermatitis. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of HHT on atopic dermatitis Methods : We investigated the inhibitory effects of HHT on the production of proinflammatory cytokines in rat peritoneal mast cells (RPMCs), on the scratching behavior in ICR mice, and on atopic dermatitis symptoms in 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced atopic dermatitis-like model hairless mice. Results : Levels of TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-$1{\beta}$ increased by PMA plus A23187 co-treatment were significantly inhibited by HHT in a dose-dependent manner. HHT also inhibited the histamine release from RPMCs stimulated by compound 48/80, which promotes histamine release. The oral administration of HHT reduced the scratching behavior induced by compound 48/80 and histamine in ICR mice. Furthermore, the intradermal treatment of HHT reduced the ear edema, skin lesions, and atopic molecular marker (IgE and IL-4) in DNFB-induced atopic dermatitis model mice. Conclusions : These results suggest that HHT may be used as a potential treatment for AD as a prescription for treatment of atopic dermatitis.
In order to investigate the effect of 'Whangryonhaedok-Tang' on the anti-inflammatory, ileum of mice, blood pressure, blood glucose, total cholesterol and antibacterial activity, those pharmacological actions were conducted. The results of this studies were summarized as follows; Rat hind paw edema induced by acetic acid was inhibited. In mice, tone of intestinal smooth muscle was suppressed with the treatment of sample and intestinal contractions induced by $BaCl_2$ was inhibited. Hypertensive effect was not observed in rabbits but was observed by the water extract of 'Whangryonhaedok-Tang' excluded Phellodendri Cortex in rabbits. The increased blood glucose levels in alloxandiabetic rabbits were significantly decreased by the oral administration of the sample I after 6 days. The total cholesterol levels in alloxan-induced rabbits were significantly decreased by the oral administration of the sample I after 9 days. Antibacterial activity was observed. In addition, we thought the pharmacological actions were significantly noted by the sample III (Methanol soluble fraction) because of the purification of effective components.
We studied the screening condition for immune regulatory responsor. We focused on the T-lymphocytes leer this purpose. Mouse fetal thymic organ culture (FTOC) system and flow cytometric analysis were mainly used in this experiment. Even if FTOC is carried out in vivo condition, the pattern of thymic development in the condition of FTOC is similar to that of in vivo condition. In this regard, FTOC system might be very powerful tool to screen the immune regulator, especially concerning on T cells. To establish the optimum condition of FTOC to screen the Immune regulator, we focused on the optimum amount of dose and culture period. The cell number and surface antigens on T cells were also analysed by using hemacytometer and flow cytometer. To monitor the differentiation event, anti-CD3, anti-CD4 and anti-CD8 antibodies were used. Alkoxyglycerol and Phellodendri Cortex were used fur positive and negative control, respectively. Astragalus membranceus was used as test sample. From our analysis, we reached to conclusions that the best dose of extract is $50\;{\mu}g/ml$ of culture medium, the best culture period is for 9 days, and ethanol used as solvent has no toxicity to FTOC.
