  • An experiment was conducted to study the effect of temperature and pH on in vitro nutrient degradability, volatile fatty acid profile and methane production. The fermenter used was the semi-continuous system, known as the rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC). Sixteen cylinders were used at one time with a volume of 800 ml, the dilution rate was set at 3.5%/hour, the infused buffer being McDougall's artificial saliva. Basal diet (9.6 g DM) used in RUSITEC consisted of (DM) 6.40 g Timothy hay, 1.86 g crushed corn and 1.34 g soybean meal. The food for the fermentation vessel was provided in nylon bags, which were gently agitated in the liquid phase. The experiment lasted for 17 d with all the samples taken during the last 5 d. Treatments were allocated at random to four vessels each and were (1) two temperature levels of $39^{\circ}C$ and $41^{\circ}C$ (2) two pH levels of 6.0 and 7.0. The total diet contained ($g\;kg^{-1}$ DM) 957 OM, 115 CP and $167MJ\;kg^{-1}$ (DM) GE. Although increase in temperature from $39^{\circ}C$ to $41^{\circ}C$ reduced degradation of major nutrients in vitro, it was non-significant. Interaction effect of temperature with pH also reflected a similar trend. However, pH showed a significant (p<0.05) negative effect on the degradability of all the nutrients in vitro. Altering the in vitro pH from 7 to 6 caused marked reduction in DMD from 60.2 to 41.8, CPD from 76.3 to 55.3 and GED from 55.3 to 35.1, respectively. Low pH (6) depressed total VFA production (61.9 vs. 34.9 mM) as well as acetate to propionate ratio in vitro (from 2.0 to 1.5) when compared to pH 7. Compared to pH 7, total gas production decreased from 1,841 ml to 1,148 ml at pH 6, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ production also reduced from 639 to 260 ml and 138 to 45 ml, respectively. This study supported the premise that pH is one of the principal factors affecting the microbial production of volatile fatty acids and gas. Regulating the ruminal pH to increase bacterial activity may be one of the methods to optimize VFA production, reduce methane and, possibly, improve animal performance.

  • With the digital terrestrial television broadcasting transition, terrestrial television broadcasting have required the replacement of retransmission facilities for the analog broadcasting installed in the existing apartment, building, cable TV station, MATV system and so on. In addition, new standards have been enacted for retransmission of the digital television broadcasting in MATV system. To deal with this issue, in this paper, we propose a new 8-VSB remodulator that can retransmit signals of the terrestrial digital television broadcasting. Moreover, we present a standard and the process composition of the 8-VSB remodulator, and an experimental environment configuration for performance evaluation. To achieve this, we have implemented the 8-VSB remodulator with the sequential process components comprised of the RF signal retransmission, the TS stream modulator, the RF signal reception and demodulation. Through the simulation, we analyze the performance standard from the measured data such as spurious and phase noise. And then, we measure SNR and EVM of each attenuation step of the signal obtained by the signal processor and the 8-VSB remodulator with the same retransmission environment and conditions. Experimental results show that both the 8-VSB remodulator and the signal processor can be used as equipment for the retransmission of the terrestrial digital television broadcasting. In addition, the 8-VSB remodulator performed well to improve the transmission efficiency for the digital broadcasting signal, compare to the existing signal processor.

  • In this paper, an efficient power control based MF-TDMA resource allocation scheme is proposed for next generation military satellite communication systems. The proposed scheme has the flexibility is used to support heterogeneous terminals with differ in transmission capabilities. The method can be divided into two parts : burst size calculation and burst structure determination. At first, we estimate the link budget taken into account a dynamic satellite link state variation. Then, applicable ACM level and burst size is chosen. In burst structure determination phase, we reorganize the burst structure in time-frequency domain by controlling limited power, bandwidth, time resources. In particular, we compensate the power spectral density among different terminals to integrate them in same transponder, Furthermore, we increase the packing efficiency by controlling the ACM level of the burst in applicable power spectral density range. Simulation results show that the method increase the spectral efficiency and burst packing efficiency. In addition, slot allocation rejection ratio is successfully reduced.

  • An Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave generation system uses the air flow induced by the vertical motion of water column in the air chamber as a driving force of turbine. It is well known that OWC is one of the most efficient devices to harness wave power. This study estimated the air flow velocity from the time variation of the water level fluctuation in the air chamber under regular wave conditions using 3-dimensional numerical irregular wave tank (3D-NIT) model that can simulate the 3-dimensional irregular wave field. The applicability of the 3D-NIT model was validated by comparing numerically predicted air flow velocities with hydraulic experimental results. In addition, the characteristics of air flow frequency spectrum variation due to the incident frequency spectrum change, and the variations of frequency spectrum and wave reflection due to the existence of converter inside the air chamber were discussed. It is found that the phase difference exists in between the air flow velocity and the water level fluctuation inside the air chamber, and the peak frequency of the spectrum in water level fluctuation is amplified by the resonance in the air chamber.

  • Because the prime objective of the current preemption methods at signalized intersections near highway-railroad grade crossings(IHRGCs) is to clear the crossing, secondary objectives such as safe pedestrian crossing time and minimized delay often are given less consideration or are ignored completely during the preemption. Under certain circumstances state-of-the-practice traffic signal preemption strategies may cause serious pedestrian safety and efficiency problems at IHRGCs. An improved transition preemption strategy(ITPS) that is specifically designed to improve intersection performance while maintaining or improving the current level of safety was developed by Cho and Rilett. Even if the new transition preemption strategy improved both the safety and efficiency of IHRGCs, the performance of the strategy is affected by train speed. Understanding the impact of this factor is essential in order to implement ITPS. In this paper, the effects of train speed were analyzed using a VISSIM simulation model which was calibrated to field conditions. It was concluded that the delay is affected more by train speed than the transitional preemption strategy and the safety of the intersection is not affected by train speed once an advanced preemption warning time(APWT) is equal to or greater than 90 seconds.

  • The effect of wave and current interactions on regular wave transformation over a submerged elliptic shoal is investigated based on numerical simulations of the Vincent and Briggs experiment [Vincent, C.L., Briggs, M.J., 1989. Refraction-diffraction of irregular waves over a mound. Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering, 115(2), pp. 269-284]. The numerical simulations are conducted by constituting two numerical model systems: a combination of SWAN(a wave model) plus SHORECIRC(a current model) and a combination of REF/DIF 1(a wave model) plus SHORECIRC. A time dependent phase-resolving wave-current model, FUNWAVE, is also utilized to simulate the experiment. In the simulations, the breaking-induced currents defocus waves behind the shoal and bring on a wave shadow zone that shows relatively low wave height distributions. The computed results of the two model systems agree better with the measurements than the computed results obtained by neglecting wave-current interaction do. However, it is found that the radiation stresses for standing waves are misevaluated in the wave models. In addition, the results of FUNWAVE show very good agreement with the measurements. The agreement indicates that it is necessary to take into account the effect of breaking-induced current on wave refraction when wave-breaking occurs over a submerged shoal.

  • This paper presents the design of 860 MHz band transmitter for improving power amplifier's linearity using Cartesian feedback method. For eliminating the effects of gain, phase mis-match, and DC offset, we estimate the property variations using ADS software. The implemented Cartesian feedback transmitter exhibits IMD3 of -54 dBc at an output power of 43 dBm and this result shows that the linearity is improved for 22.4 dB, compared with the test of the power amplifier without Cartesian feedback system. Thus, we verify that the proposed Cartesian feedback transmitter can be applied to narrow-band transmitter systems.

  • This study develops a passive traffic signal priority control algorithm for emergency vehicles. The passive priority control estimates and applies signal times for each signalized intersection on the emergency vehicle's route when an emergency call is received. As signals are controlled before the emergency vehicle leaves for its destination, it is possible to clear the queues at each intersection more effectively. Most of the previous studies applied preemption, which ends green time of cross streets when the emergency vehicle arrives at each intersection. This study applies green extension and early green in order not to shift the order of phases, and guarantees minimum green time for each phase. Simulation results show that the delay of emergency vehicles decreases when the signals are controlled. It is expected that delays can be decreased further by integrating the active priority control with the passive priority control algorithm presented in this study.

  • The combination of the broadband property and the wide area coverage of satellite communications enables high speed transmission. Every user in the region under the satellite beam coverage can tranceiver and one can simultaneously communicate with multiple users. For these reasons, it is one of commendable telecommunication networks for information transfer. Since the satellite communications use open channels, it is likely to cause jamming with unwanted interference signals. In the thesis, APSK (Amplitude Phase Shift Keying) is employed, which is recommended for DVB-S2 due to high-speed transmission and excellent bandwidth efficiency. For obtaining reliable communication under the jamming environments, the communication satellite transponder rests on the polyphase filter bank structure, which enables switching among the subchannels and gain control on each subchannel, resulting in effectively eliminating jamming. Furthermore, the nulling scheme, one of the various anti-jamming approaches, is investigated, in which unwanted jamming signals are eliminated in the frequency domain after passing through the analysis part of the polyphase filter bank. The performance of the nulling scheme is evaluated for tone jamming and partial band jamming in terms of BER and EVM. The simulation results indicate that the nulling scheme improve the BER and EVM performance over the case without any anti-jamming approach.

  • In high field (> 3 T) MR imaging, the magnetic field inhomogeneity in the target object increases due to the nonuniform electro-magnetic characteristics of the relatively high RF frequency. Especially in the body imaging, the effect causes more serious problems resulting in locally high SAR(Specific Absorption Ratio). In this paper, we propose an optimized parallel-transmission RF coil and show the utility of the coil by FDTD simulations to overcome the unwanted effects. Three types of TX coil elements are tested to maximize the efficiency and their driving patterns(amplitude and phase) optimized to have adequate field homogeneity, proper SAR level, and sufficient field strength. For the proposed coil element of $25cm{\times}8cm$ loop structure with 12 channels for a 3.0 T body coil, the field non-uniformity of more than 70% without optimization was reduced to about 26 % after the optimization of driving patterns. The experimental as well as simulation results show that the proposed parallel driving scheme is clinically useful for (ultra) high field MRI.
