  • As air pollution has become an important issue across the world, studies of clean fuel are on going to reduce combustion emissions. One example is development of the LPLi(Liquefied Phase LPG injection) engine. Some problems are occurred during development. One of the problems is icing phenomenon at injector tip due to evaporation potential heat when liquid LPG is injected. If the Icing is raised at injector tip or injector inserting hole, it disturbs fuel injection. And if the ice particles are inducted into cylinder, it brings problems associated with control of emission and air/fuel ratio. In order to solve the problems, a rig system was set up and observed Icing of injector tip. Engine test was carried out for visualization of injector tip icing and its effects on combustion and emissions.

  • Finite element analysis showed that strong magnetic fields were distributed around the arc furnace where the strongest magnetic field was generated around the three phase cables, and followed by the electrodes and the mast arm in decreasing order. Magnetic field decay patterns around the arc furnace could be fitted by introducing exponential formula,$Y=Y_0+Ae^{\frac-{x}{t}}$. These results showed that magnetic field intensities around the arc furnace could be estimated at any 3-dimensional positions using the finite element method (FEM).

  • A fiberoptic sensor using a low-coherence SLD as a light source has been studied. The sensor system employing an intrinsic fiber Fabry-Peort interferometer as a sensing tip and a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer as a processing one, overcomes the ambiguous reading caused by the highly periodic natrue of conventional high-precision interferometric sensors and provides unambiguous identification of the desired phase among several candidates on the transfer function of an interferometric signal. A tentative application to the temperature sensor shows the potential that the fiberoptic sensor has a side-dynamic range of $0-900^{\circ}C$ as well as reasonable resolution higher than $0.1^{\circ}C$ without ambiguity. Due to the inherent property of the optical fiber itself and the intrinsic fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer, the proposed fiberoptic sensor will give obvious benefits when it is applied to harsh environments to monitor some physical parameters such as temperature, strain, pressure and vibration.

  • Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy in men in the United States. Surgery or radiation are sometimes unsatisfactory treatments because of the complications such as incontinence or erectile dysfunction. Selenium was found to be effective to preven prostate cancer in the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer Trial (NPC), which motivated two other clinical trials: the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) and a Phase III trial of selenium to prevent prostate cancer in men with high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia. However, these two trials failed to confirm the results of the NPC trial and indicated that the selenium may not be preventive of prostate cancer. In this article we review the three clinical trials and discuss some different points which might be potential factors underlying variation in results obtained.

  • A new concept of 22.9kV class revenue metering system based on the optical sensing technique was designed and implemented. This paper reports on the performance of a 22.9kV class three phase optical current/voltage metering scheme and three tariff metering system. This optoelectronic system was designed and developed to advance the state of the art in revenue metering. This paper deals with the characteristics of designed optical CPT (Current and Potential Transformer) and optoelectronic demand meter. The extensive field evaluation of the developed system with the existing oil filled transformer and solid state metering pair is undertaking. Upto now the operation of the optical revenue metering system under the field condition compares favorably with the existing system.

  • Purpose - This study reviews changes in the automobile export-import structure between Japan and USA through a trade related index, and focuses on analyzing comparative advantage based on time-series analysis of statistical data (2000, 2005, and 2012) by using the trade intensity index (TII), revealed comparative advantage index (RCA), and trade specialization index (TSI). Research design, data, and methodology - Japan and USA have mutually complementary economic phase characteristics. Therefore, this study aimed to understand each country's trade structure, to strengthen Japan-USA economic cooperation and aimed to examine trade drawbacks to analyze causes affecting trade and ways to improve it to facilitate its expansion. Results - These two economies have immense complementary potential and, further, significantly greater profits are assured from trade between them, as compared to any other integrated regional economic community. Conclusion - Economic cooperation between these two powers can provide opportunities for industry technology cooperation through partnerships against the backdrop of accelerating competition among industries, by identifying opportunities to secure stable resource suppliers and enlarge the export market.

  • In this paper we develop a minimalist model of single molecule spectroscopy in a dynamic environment. Our model is based upon a lattice system consisting of a probe molecule embedded in an Ising-model like environment. We assume that the probe molecule interacts with the Ising spins via a dipole-dipole potential, and calculate free energy curves and lineshapes of the system. To investigate fluctuation behavior of the system we exploit the metadynamics sampling method. In particular, using the method, we calculate the free energy curve of magnetization of the lattice and that of the transition energy of the probe molecule. Furthermore, we compare efficiencies of three different sampling methods used; unbiased, umbrella, and metadynamics sampling methods. Finally, we explore the lineshape behavior of the probe molecule as the system undergoes a phase transition from a sub-critical and to a super-critical temperature. We show that the transition energy of a probe molecule is broadly distributed due to the heterogeneous, local environments.

  • Phase-change random access memory (PRAM) has been emerged as a potential memory due to its excellent scalability, non-volatility, and random accessibility. But, as the cell current is reducing due to cell size scaling, the read-sensing window margin is also decreasing due to increased variation of cell performance distribution, resulting in a substantial loss of yield. To cope with this problem, a novel adaptive read-sensing reference current generation scheme is proposed, whose trimming range and resolution are adaptively controlled depending on process conditions. Performance evaluation in a 58-nm CMOS process indicated that the proposed read-sensing reference current scheme allowed the integral nonlinearity (INL) to be improved from 10.3 LSB to 2.14 LSB (79% reduction), and the differential nonlinearity (DNL) from 2.29 LSB to 0.94 LSB (59% reduction).

  • In this study, the effect of Nb alloying element on the corrosion fatigue properties of high strength steel is investigated by conducting fatigue experiments under corrosive condition and hydrogen induced condition, potentiodynamic polarization test, tensile test and surface analyses. Nb element is added to enhance the mechanical property of medium carbon steel. This element forms MX-type phases such as carbides and nitrides which are playing an important role in the grain refinement. The grain refinement is one of the effective way to improve mechanical property because both tensile strength and toughness can be improved at the same time. However, MX-type phase precipitates can be a susceptible site to localized corrosion in corrosive environment due to the potential difference between matrix and precipitate. The obtained results showed that Nb-added steel improved corrosion fatigue property by grain refinement. However, it is degraded for hydrogen-induced fatigue property due to Nb, Ti-inclusions acting as a stronger trap.

  • The first Space-VLBI project, VSOP, started successfully with the launch of the dedicated space-VLBI satellite HALCA in 1997. The project has been in scientific operation in the 1.6 GHz and 5 GHz bands, and studies have been done mainly of the jet phenomena related to active galactic nuclei. A second generation space- VLBI project, VSOP-2, has been planned by the working group formed at ISAS/JAXA with many collaborators. The spacecraft is planned to observe in the 8, 22 and 43 GHz bands with cooled receivers for the two higher bands, and with a maximum angular resolution at 43 GHz (7 mm) of about 40 micro-arcseconds. The VSOP-2 satellite will also have the capability of the phase-reference and full polarization observations, which will produce more powerful results than those of the VSOP project. Far-future space-VLBI projects following VSOP and VSOP-2, have a large potential to achieve enough resolution and sensitivity to satisfy astronomers in future.
