In order to examine how the solid-liquid interface responds to temperature variation depending on the materials characteristics, i.e. faceted phase or nonfaceted phase, the moving solid-liquid interface of transparent organic material, as a model substance for metallic materials (pivalic acid, camphene, salol, and camphor-50wt% naphthalene) was observed in-situ. Plots of the interface movement distance against time were obtained. The solid-liquid interface of the nonfaceted phase is atomically rough; it migrates in continuous mode, giving smooth curves of the distance-time plot. This is the case for pivalic acid and camphene. It was expected that the faceted phases would show different types of curves of the distance-time plot because of the atomically smooth solid-liquid interface. However, salol (faceted phase) shows a curve of the distance-time plot as smooth as that of the nonfaceted phases. This indicates that the solid-liquid interface of salol migrates as continuously as that of the nonfaceted phases. This is in contrast with the case of naphthalene, one of the faceted phases, for which the solid-liquid interface migrates in "stop and go" mode, giving a stepwise curve of the distance-time plot.
Previous publications regarding the design and specifications of the interface inductor and the DC side capacitor for a STATCOM usually deal with the interface inductor and the DC side capacitor only. They seldom pay attention to the influences of the interface inductor and capacitor on the performance of a STATCOM system. In this paper a detailed analysis of influence of the interface inductor and the DC side capacitor on a STATCOM system and the corresponding design considerations is presented. Phase and amplitude control is considered as the control strategy for the STATCOM. First, a model of a STATCOM system is carried out. Second, through frequency domain methods, such as transfer functions and Bode plots, the influence of the interface inductor and the DC side capacitor on the stability and filtering characteristics of the STATCOM are extensively investigated. Third, according to this analysis, the design considerations based on the phase margin for the interface inductor and the DC side capacitor are discussed, which leads to parameters that are different from those of the traditional design.
There is currently a focus on usability of interactive computer software. Previous research in software ergonomics has indicated the importance of evaluating the usability of software user interfaces. Software developers, interface designers or human foctors engineers often confront the task of comparative evaluation among systems, versions or interface designs. This study presents a structured model for comparative evaluation of user interface designs using usability criteria and measures. The proposed model consists of twomain phases : the prescreening phase ad the evaluation phase. The first phase involves expert judgment-based approach with qualitative criteria. The prescreening phase uses absolute measurement analytic hierarchy process to filter possible altermative interfaces to a reasonable subset. The second phase involves user-based approach such as usability testing, with quantitative criteria. The objective of the evaluation phase is to evaluate a subset of altermatives using objective measures. A set of criteria and measures for evaluating the usability of computer software designs is presented. The proposed model provides practitioners with a structured approach to select the best interface based on usability criteria and measures.

The object of this study is to develop new examination techniques for detecting the debonds in adhesive interface of different kinds of the material. Ultrasonic signal was modeled by theoretically analyzing ultrasonic propagation phenomenon of the adhesive interface and debonding interface. The test method using the phase reversal of the debonding interface applied to the FRP/Rubber test block. Aluminum/Rubber test block with the flat bottom hole was manufactured to quantitatively evaluate the minimum detection ability of the defects. The pulse echo reflection method and the phase reversal method were mutually compared and it was estimated that the phase reversal method could detect the debonds on the basis of the theoretically predicted ultrasonic signal and ultrasonic test data.

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study interface structures between an $Al_2O_3$ crystalline phase and a interface phase of $CaAl_2Si_2O_8$. We calculated atomic structures and excess interface energies in systems with different thicknesses of the interface film. It was found that excess interface energies at first readily decreased with increasing film thickness, but increased for larger thicknesses of more than 2 nm. The excess energies of $Al_2O_3/CaAl_2Si_2O_8$ interfaces exhibit a minimum at a thickness around 1 nm. In this range of film thicknesses, the atoms in the interface film show a short-range ordered structure and slow diffusion rather than the random structure and rapid diffusion expected to an observation of an equilibrium thickness for interface films in ceramics.

The phase field model is becoming the model of choice for the theoretical study of the morphologies of crystals growth from the melt. This model provides an alternative approach to the solution of the classical (sharp interface) model of solidification by introducing a new variable, the phase field, Ø, to identify the phase. The variable Ø takes on constant values in the bulk phases and makes a continuous transition between these values over a thin transition layer that plays the role of the classically sharp interface. This results in Ø being governed by a new partial differential equation(in addition to the PDE's that govern the classical fields, such as temperature and composition) that guarantees (in the asymptotic limit of a suitably thin transition layer) that the appropriate boundary conditions at the crystal-melt interface are satisfied. Thus, one can proceed to solve coupled PDE's without the necessity of explicitly tracking the interface (free boundary) that would be necessary to solve the classical (sharp interface) model. Recent advances in supercomputing and algorithms now enable generation of interesting and valuable results that display most of the fundamental solidification phenomena and processes that are observed experimentally. These include morphological instability, solute trapping, cellular growth, dendritic growth (with anisotropic sidebranching, tip splitting, and coupling to periodic forcing), coarsening, recalescence, eutectic growth, faceting, and texture development. This talk will focus on the fundamental basis of the phase field model in terms of irreversible thermodynamics as well as it computational limitations and prognosis for future improvement. We developed a three dimensional Navier-Stokes code based on the level set method to simulate two phase flows with high density ratio. The Navier-Stokes equations with consideration of the surface tension effects are solved by using SIMPLE algorithm on a non-staggered grid. The present code is validated by simulating two test problems. First one is to simulate a rising bubble inside a cube. The thickness of the interface of the bubble is shown to affect the pressure distribution around the interface. As the thickness decreases, the pressure field around the interface becomes more oscillatory. As the bubble rises, a ring vortex is shown to form around the interface and the bubble eventually develops into an ellipsoidal shape. Merge of two bubbles inside a container is secondly tested to show the robustness of the present code for two phase flow simulation. Numerical results show stable and reliable behavior during the process of merging of two bubbles. The velocity and pressure fields around the interface of bubbles are shown oscillation free during the merging of two bubbles.

Two-phase compressible flow fields of air-water are investigated numerically in the fixed Eulerian grid framework. The phase interface is captured via volume fractions of each phase. A way to model two phase compressible flows as a single phase one is found based on an equivalent equation of states of Tait's type for a multiphase cell. The equivalent single phase field is discretized using the Roe‘s approximate Riemann solver. Two approaches are tried to suppress the pressure oscillation phenomena at the phase interface, a passive advection of volume fraction and a direct pressure relaxation with the compressible form of volume fraction equation. The direct pressure equalizing method suppresses pressure oscillation successfully and generates sharp discontinuities, transmitting and reflecting acoustic waves naturally at the phase interface. In discretizing the compressible form of volume fraction equation, phase interfaces are geometrically reconstructed to minimize the numerical diffusion of volume fraction and relevant variables. The motion of a projectile in a water-filled tube which is fired by the release of highly pressurized air is simulated presuming the flow field as a two dimensional one, and several design factors affecting the projectile movement are investigated.

Generally, the phase control dimmer has been widely used due to simple interface and easy handling. However, the electrical characteristics are not good for the method in which the phase control dimmer cuts the input voltage. This paper has researched about DALI(Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) controller, that is the digital lighting control method, and implemented DALI protocol satisfied with the IEC-62386 standard. In addition, the existing phase control dimmer was used as the controller of DALI and not only individual control but also group control was possible. And the performance was proved to be good by applying our theory to 30[W] LED lighting control system.
