Crying Sea, The Sound Installation: Artistic Considerations for Coexistence between Human and Technology

  • As the discourse on Anthropocene grows, this exploratory research investigates the interrelationship and interconnectivity between humanity and technology by analyzing a sound art installation created by the author. Crying Sea is a sound installation that uses plastic wastes collected from the shore to create symbolic narratives and artistic experience connecting humans, objects, and nature through interactive digital technology. In this installation, the audiences are guided to walk over the wastes, and the sounds created by the footsteps are recorded in real-time, which then are distorted and amplified into disturbing sounds through speakers filling up the room. In analyzing this artwork, three theories from technological, philosophical, and ecological backgrounds were used; specifically, Bernard Stiegler's pharmakon theory, Dona Haraway's cyborg manifesto, and Timothy Morton's dark ecology theory. A common factor revealed from all three theories by analyzing the Crying Sea is that humans, technologies, and all other entities within nature are interconnected and resonated. The awareness of this recursive relationship allows us to consider sustainable balancing.

Is YouTube a Pharmakon? (유튜브는 파르마콘인가?)

  • 본 논문의 목적은 비대면 교육 상황에서 왜 대학생들이 유튜브 중독에 빠지는지를 조사하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 연구모형을 개발한 후, 대학생들을 대상으로 한 설문조사를 실시하였다. 총 113부의 설문 자료로 구조 방정식 모형을 사용한 데이터 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 외로움 정도가 높을수록 유튜브 이용 동기는 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 시간 보내기와 즐거움 동기가 높을수록 유튜브 중독 정도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 유튜브 중독의 한 원인은 시간 보내기 혹은 줄거움 동기의 유튜브 시청이며, 그 대책 중 하나는 외로움을 극복하는 것이라는 시사점이 있다.

Effects of the Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Enjoyment of YouTube Use on Academic Adjustment of College Students in Distance Education due to COVID-19: Focusing on Compulsive YouTube Usage

  • The goal of this study is to investigate how YouTube use motivation such as perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment affect the compulsive YouTube usage and academic adjustment of college students. To this end, a research model was established and 113 response data obtained by conducting a questionnaire survey on college students in Seoul were used for structural model analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as following. First, perceived usefulness has a positive effect on academic adjustment. Second, compulsive YouTube usage has a negative effect on academic adjustment. Third, perceived enjoyment was identified as a factor that plays a role like pharmakon. The findings suggest the necessity of learning strategies that control the degree of perceived enjoyment as well as the instrumental use of perceived usefulness in order to improve the academic adjustment of college students.
